Information about the World Record 5 pound 3 oz White Crappie?

Well kind of bored here on a Sunday afternoon, I didn't fish today had some chores to catch up on. This has been on my mind for awhile and I have even spoke to several fellow members on the subject. I have heard from one that this fish was caught in the spillway at Enid which I doubt seeing how they discern whether record fish are taken from the spillway or reservoir, this fish was clearly taken from the lake itself. I recently had someone else tell me this fish was caught from an old pond or lake that was overfilled once and basically cutoff from the main lake itself and that was what allowed for this fish to grow to enormous size in just 5 short years. I can't find any information on the subject besides date caught, weight and the name of the fisherman. Also, while on this subject do you think the record should have an asterisk beside it and we should start over? After 60 years I highly doubt there will be a fish caught that will top this 5 pound monster, the sport is to popular and with technology and fishing methods to advanced now days I don't see it happening.

It is what it is...the world record white crappie.....i dont think any records should be started over.

I think we will see it broke and think folks will be surprised where it comes from, you have some awesome fertile fisheries that are getting better year by year.

Not sure, longest record running for the state of MS and if I had to guess crappie are the most sought after game fish in the state now. How many good fish aren't being brought forward each year because they fall well shy or a little short of this really old standing record? Just food for thought, I could care less about my name in any record book and we certainly know there are plenty crappie anglers on the lake now. I stick by my original statement, I don't see it happening and remind you this fish was a mid summer fish not a spawning spring fish!

I hope it's broken by guess who as does every other fishermen. That's what records are for.

I think a new record will be caught by a bass fisherman using a crankbait or large swim bait.

Lol. I actually heard it was caught in the river on a trot line

Enid Dam was put into operation in Dec. 1952, and Mr. Fred Bright caught the fish on July 31, 1957. My thoughts are the first 10 years of the dam operation the water was so rich and fertile the fish were like on steroids, and as years grew on the water became less fertile, and couldn't produce that size fish. I think the record will be broken IF new dams are built on the most fertile soil ...:fish

Are there any pics of that record crappie? I don't believe there was a picture of the world record bass caught in 1932. A lot of people think is was a striper and not a largemouth.

The world record crappie was mounted and is on display at the Corps visitors center at Enid.

Well that answers that question.

There have been bigger fish caught. No telling how many 5-6lb fish have been filleted. You have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get one certified. Supposedly a little girl caught one in Louisiana several years ago that went over 6lb. They didn't follow proper procedures for certification, from what I've heard. Most people catch a crappie and see good eats, not records.

The only diff. between a 4 lb crappie and a 5lbr is the size of the fillets.

I believe butla holds the new world record JMO

I've eaten several 3 pound crappie....3 pound crappie is not large enough to mount...so eat it, or let it go....cheers2

No way I'd mount a 3lber, I've released a dozen or so in the last few years and will continue to do so. It means a lot more to some folks to catch one than it does me, been catching them for a long time simply because of where we fish. I have seen what I believed was one well over 4 that came off at the boat and just laid there on its side and it was no where near the Big 4.
We are very fortunate here, we talk about 2 lbers like they are nuttin and to most around the country that's a dang good fish, heck I'd take 7 of em in every tourney I fish.

Well shucks, reckon I just run in the wrong circle, wasn't aware so many 5 pound crappie were ending up on the dinner table. I understand that it may be a hassle to have one properly certified. What does strike me odd is that everyone from the age of 8 to 80 has a smartphone now with a camera on it. Plenty of pictures of 3/4 pound fish all the way to a few 4 pound plus out there, I'm guessing when it comes to the 5 pound fish most can't be bothered to take a few measurements, weigh them on a scale and document the catch with photos. :dono:biggrin

Hey hey hey.......... Give ol Leroy those 2 n 3 lbders. On my lake a 16" crappie will weigh 1.75 lbs most of the year. Full of eggs mite go over two. You guys are blessed. Now if I go to the coosa chain. It's a diff story. They are heavier but the meat is dingy looking and has an odor.

Heard of a 21 inch crappie by a volunteer ranger on Enid back around 2005 . We recovered the skeleton and skin connected to verify it was a crappie . We have no ideal of weight, but fish was 20 1/2 inches with fish having been cleaned that morning. I went in to work at 1530 and fish was very dry . Man has since passed but was a fish catching machine . Trolled with huge minnows on cane poles .

Butla is also the tuffest Lake in the world to fish and bill dance said this long before I did just his opinion as well I imagine but the new world record could come out of any lake from Maine to Illinois

I have also been told that story.

The mount is supposedly a replica, but I have not seen it personally. If the date was march 31 I'd probably believe it happened. July 31st... uh, did it weigh 6+ pounds in march? It's just hard to fathom that he caught one when the fish was nearly its lightest weight all year, and no one else has caught one in 60 years that was close, when their fish was at their heaviest.

I'm not saying it didn't happen, I'm saying I find it awfully hard to believe.

If the record is caught, I'd say it's probably coming out of a farm pond. Not a wild fish. It would take an exceptional specimen to get that big before it dies of old age.

I caught a 19 1/2" long male black crappie out of Sardis in Clear Creek in the spring of 2015. That fish would have not weighed a pound and a half I bet. No telling how old that fish was, at the time I just figured it like with deer, after a certain age they start going the other way. I lost the photos after I had cell phone crap out on me, I do have a witness though, he caught a white crappie on the same stump while I was dealing with the long crappie, and he may have been a white that turned so black I was mistaken. Just saying, length is not always a sure sign of weight.

Heck, I was just in a joking mood!
3 lb and above are RARE in my neck of the swamp. All blacks here, I would consider mounting one over 3 Lb, as I just like looking at Specks. Now my wife.....release to the grease, with a bowl of beans!

It would take a reclusive specimen to live that long before getting caught on any of the big lakes. The fishing pressure they receive will pretty much eliminate them before they get over 3.5-4 lbs. Anything over 12" is in real trouble. [emoji23]

I was a little fellow at the time, when stories came in about fishing I was all ears. My dad was in a group of fishermen so there were a lot of phone calls and people stopping by. Then our first trip to Enid spillway were the big crappie was said to have been caught, at the end of the rip rap. At the time the rip rap ended about where the handicap pier is today. We stopped at Sardis bait and service station, hwy 51 and 315 for minnows. There were lots of people there getting minnows. Someone said this is the closest place for minnow toward Enid. Then we get to the spillway. You couldn't buy a parking space between the outlet tunnel to the road's end. You couldn't buy a spot where the natural rock is or at the end of the rip rap. We ended up down the river passed where I-55 is today and fished around some logs. Dad caught a few and was given a few more as we were leaving.
My next trip to the spillway there was a large pile of rock on both sides of the spillway and pilings were being drove for the bridges of I-55.
