Looking at the legend on a local lake, the arm I fish mostly had hardwood brush piles sunk in 2012. That got me wondering how long brush piles will hold fish assuming they are hardwood trees?

I have some from 30 years ago that hold in winter. A lot of others have rotted down to small humps on the bottom. We use a lot of popular trees and some of them are still tall[emoji226]

don't know how long osage orange lasts but its a long time.

Surely western KY has Osage orange, aka hedge apple, aka bodock. If not TN is full of them and most any farmer would be tickled to death for you to cut and remove all you want.
It is all over western Kentucky, my aunt's farm has at least 50 Osage trees on it. She isn't big on tree cutting or I would have already put most of it in Kentucky/Barkley. It is pretty tough and thorny wood to work with.
Also makes great selfbows if you have the patience to follow one ring down the back.

the hedge trees in stockton and truman are still standing. these trees have been holding fish off and on for 30+ years. if you can find some they will last. locust trees are the ones with long SHARP thorns work great and are ranchers/farmers worse nightmare, they will puncture a tractor, pick up tire in a heart beat. they (ranchers/ farmers) love to get rid of them too, What takes the trees from lakes is when the lake gets low for a while the trees start dry rotting at the lowest level,when the lake rises and lowers eventually they will break off or roots will rot and the trees will break and flow down the lake. we place our piles not much above 20 foot below power pool stockton went from 7 1/2 low to 7 ft above PP this spring. hopes this helps
We have an abundance of Osage in Ohio also...we loaded our 2500 acre home lake...the one thing to remember is a solid dense wood has some serious weight and really goes through some chain saw blades.lol
These buckets were a hand full for 2 guys to drop....Osage in stained water will last a lifetime, in cooler stained water maybe 2 lifetimes.
Hard woods last a very long time if they had size diameter wise when they went down. We have lots of really old "corp" piles that are still good and they are really old ....30 years I would guess more or less

Several....when you are adding Cover, you need to look at it and imagine how many fish can use it at once. How many fish can swim through it or rest in it, and how many can swim around it. I put 10 to 20 of those buckets in a group, with laydowns or milk crates with oak limbs/slats on the outside.Quote:
