Two sets of chaps, please

Believe it or not, I will be attending the fall fish camp. My neighbor and fishing buddy, Jeff, decided he wanted to tag along so I reserved a site, # 158, today. We'll be getting there Thursday and leaving Sunday. We had to promise his wife we wouldn't do any tomcatting so Steve, our tent is off limits.:Rofl

It's been over 30 years since I've fished this chain of lakes and don't remember much about the chain other than I used to catch a lot of crappie through the ice on the southern most lake.

Figure to let Jeff have a go at the goat first so he takes some of the fight out of it, I'm getting too old to ride a highly spirited animal.

We'll be setting a tent so hopefully mother nature plays nice that weekend.

The Mrs, my niece and I went down yesterday to do some fishing on the chain.....met up with a resident and member Bob Johnson. Fish weren't biting well, Bob gave us his catch of 8 perch, a crappie and a gill which we added to our meager catch of 4 gills and a perch so wed have enough for a small fish fry.

I liked the lake well enough, but holy moly the vegetation was thick. All tangled up on the prop, transducer......and I got a nasty green scumline at the waterline on the boat. Bucket of soapy water is going to be used today to get er cleaned up!

Did you fish the entire chain? I've been looking for any info I can find on the lakes. When I fished them back in the mid 80's we mostly bass fished and didn't have electronics so I have no idea about depth and structure.

I think the last time I fished there was 1985, I was on Messenger Lake fishing crappie through the ice. I was using a teardrop and wax worm and had no electronics, just a couple of spring bobber, plastic reel ice rods, a coleman lantern and a bucket to sit on. I was the only one on the lake other than a local kid about 16 and he was listening to Coldwater High School basketball on a portable radio. We fished until the game was over, I don't remember who won, and we both went home with a nice mess of crappie. Funny thing is, I can forget where I'm going before I get to town but remember things from 30 years ago like it was yesterday.

The last camp we did on that chain was the fall too. Some had goose hunters spraying them with shot, so no dressing like a goose boys!

I remember having to pull salad outa my jet drive too, so the shallows are a bad thing for me. I remember Kevin, Jimmy, and I fishing what looked like Christmas trees submerged in the upper bay of Morrison.

Thats sounds about right Don. From what we gathered, the locals like to put their christmas trees out on the ice and sink them in the spring. If memory serves me, the better crappie fishing was the weeds up on Craig Lake. Jimmy was pulling cranks. No body really lit the world up but Eric and Kevin caught a few as well as Gary and Tonda and Dar and his son caught a few as well.

Back while the earth was young, the residents of Horse head lake in Mecosta would sink there Christmas trees, it was fun to drift along and see them down there as most left the tinsel on them.

My grandfather had a cottage on Horsehead lake from the late 50's until Grandma sold it in 1978......lots of great memories!

what campsite are you going to be holding the goat riding event at?
