High School Football Time Again.....John Boy's Senior Year

High school football is almost here and I'm excited and sad about it, all at the same time. This will be my son's senior year and I just hope it's a memorable one. He's been a Camden Harmony Grove Hornet since 3rd grade in 2008. Here's a pic from his very first game. Seems like yesterday!

His Hornets are currently ranked #3 in the state behind Mt. Ida and Rison. Both of those teams beat us last year so I guess the rankings are based on something besides opinion only. The Hornets open up the season as one of the 8 team Hooten's Magazine selected to play in their Hooten's Classic Season Kickoff Game. We'll face Smackover at SAU Magnolia Stadium on Tuesday, August 29 at 5:30. Following our game, Hampton takes on Prescott. There are two other games that will be played at UCA on Monday, August 28. Being selected as one of those teams is quite an honor and I'm very proud of my son's current team, former teammates, and coaches for earning this recognition. I'm expecting a very exciting year and I know no matter how the season ends, I'll be sad. I love watching my son and his friends play!

Good luck this year! Mine's on the freshmen team over here in MS. My son's team isn't held to high expectations, but I'm looking forward to watching them play and grow.

John started for the varsity team as a freshman. That team went 3-7, but because the 3 games won were against conference opponents, we made the playoffs. One playoff game and done that year.

The next year after this one, his sophomore year, the Hornets went 7-3 and won a home playoff game over a better team, then lost on the road to a team not as talented as ours (mainly due to 6 turnovers!). Last year, junior year, his Hornets started out 1-2, then finished regular season at 5-4......then went 3-1 in the playoffs only to come up one game short of the State Championship game. Last year was a thrilling year for sure! Hoping this year is equally as good.

Good luck Cricketcage and good luck to your son. Hope you guys have as good of a time as I have watching mine play. I wish I could keep it going for a few more. :)

We were 3A for his 9th & 10th grade seasons, then because of decreased enrollment we went back to 2A last year and again this year. Next year, the Hornets will return to 3A. I believe it goes in cycles of two years and HG's enrollment is always near the cutoff.

My boys lost to Smackover tonight 14-6 in the Hooten's Classic played at SAU Magnolia. Very much a defensive ballgame with two turnovers each and each team failing to convert on multiple 4th downs. John had two sacks, but one got called back because of a false start on the offense. We had our chances to win, but the Buckaroos were able to stop us. GTT

Yes.......AND get some new glasses! They missed several false starts, horse collars, and they ruled our WR out of bounds on a clear catch for a first down. GTT

Right now he's 5'11" 260 lbs. Lost some weight mowing yards this summer and is much faster. He got into the backfield a few times playing nose guard. He rocked the QB on one sack.......don't know how the kid held on to the ball, but he did. Good luck to your son and his team. GTT

#1 ranked in 3A Prescott beat us tonight 41-20. Not our best game, but we hung in there for a while with them. Offense had some nice plays and defense forced two turnovers......we're gonna get it together. GTT

On the road Friday night to play the 3A top 10 ranked Glen Rose Beavers. They're good every year so this will be another tough ball game for the Hornets. We'll give em a game! GTT

We did, but came up short 7 - 14. Hornets outgained em, but three good drives stalled around the 20-30 yard line and we came away with no points. Pick 6 makes the difference tonight as offense vs offense was 7 - 7. My guys are gonna get it together for conference play, which starts next Friday. GTT

Strong Bulldogs visit the Hornets Nest tonight for our home opener. Tonight's game will also mark the 50th Anniversary of Harmony Grove Hornet football. Lots of old timers, former players, and alumni will be tailgating and reminiscing tonight. Former players will be honored by decade at halftime and our NFL player will be there as well. My boys are gonna be buzzin tonight! GTT

Man, was I wrong about this one. Hornets 53 - Bulldogs 14. Absolutely ran all over #3 ranked Hampton tonight, as well as forcing 5 turnovers. Good night for ole Harmony Grove #79 and his teammates.

The Woodlawn Bears travel to Harmony Grove tomorrow night. They're always known for their good baseball teams, but I've heard they only have 14 football players making the trip......this one could get ugly real quick. GTT

Hornets 64 - Woodlawn Bears 21. Every Hornet had good playing time tonight and we had a freshman RB, sophomore WR, and another sophomore score their very first TDs tonight.

BIG rivalry game for the Bill Manning Trophy next week at Bearden. They've won more times since it became a rivalry game with a trophy awarded to the winner, but we've won the last two years and are making plans to keep it again this year! They've selected us as their Homecoming game opponent so it'll be a crowded house next Friday night. It'll be a good one! GTT

Playing Bearden Bears tonight for their Homecoming. Series has been going for 50 years with the Bears leading that series 26-24 according to the Camden News. There's a trophy involved, the Bill Manning Trophy is awarded to the winner and we've held it the last two years. Here's a pic of John and a Bearden cheerleader friend from two years ago. Funny, she doesn't look too thrilled. Ha.

The football rich tradition Rison Wildcats come to HG tomorrow night for our homecoming game. They're a perfect 7-0, while we're 4-3, but both teams are 4-0 in 2A-8 Conference play. This game will decide the conference championship and most likely home field advantage throughout the playoffs. Harmony Grove is 2-13 lifetime vs Rison and have not defeated them since 2000. We had them on the ropes both times we've faced them the past two seasons, but couldn't finish them off in the 4th quarter. Tomorrow night will be John's third time to play them and I hope the third time's the charm! GTT
