All I can find out about it's history is this is the 47th year. I was 19 47 years ago. I know there was some type of festival going on long before that. Melons would be stacked like cannon balls at the depot. IC would bring a passenger train and park at the depot for tours. IC stopped passenger service before I was 19.
They stopped have g it for like 15 or 20 years at some point, only counting the years it was held.

After the largest contest..They used to auction off the melons...I bid up to $165 on first place one time...Didn't get it...
