I eat em' a night sometimes, do that count?? :biggrin I've thought about the same thing eagle, so will be watching :popcorn
Got a buddy that tried it several times on Sardis couple of years ago. Not the first fish caught.
I tried it at Trace lake years ago using green underwater lights....All I caught were bass and channel catfish.
All my big 4 fishin has been in the daylight but I can tell you about it in Mo......Put out a light be it submersible, floating or a coleman lantern with a reflector to keep from blinding you and hurry up and wait an hour or an hour and a half....You will see baitballs (shad) circiling the light by the thousands.Every once in awhile you will see a spot open up in the baitball which is crappie or white bass chowing down.Use throw net to catch shad minnies or bring some shinners ,put them on a hook and yes you can catch a few fish doing it...Kinda neat ,fishing at night in the summer ,missing sleep, eatin bugs, and catchin a few fish....That's been my experience anyhow.....Not my favorite mode of fishin but you can catch enough to stink up the grease...You all can catch them at night but why bother, you only have a hundred other ways in the daylight....I could show you'all that yes you too can do it but what's the point?...
I have also wondered this. I've done it around dock lights on the Rez with no success.

CAUGHT A LOT AND HE DIDN'T HAVE A MOTOR SO HE DIDN'T GO VERY FAR OUT . COURSE THIS WAS AT LEAST 50 YEARS AGO . STILL SHOULD WORK . :dono PS HE WAS A MINNER MAN
ANOTHER POINT I LIKE TO GO TO BED WHEN IT GETS DARK . JUST SAYIN'

I fish at night every now and then at Norfork Lake. The lake needs to be a clear water lake to work best. Also no moon is best, and the green submersible light works best for me. I don't think any of the big 4 would be a good night fishing for crappie, they are to muddy. :fish
I've caught lots of crappie fishing at night in Grenada Lake Spillway using a cork and jigs. Sometimes, it was better than day fishing. Haven't done it the last few years though. You can see a fluorescent yellow cork pretty good under those lights on the walkway.
Sardis be as good a place as any to try up near the dam, water is as clean looking as drinking water. I would be willing to bet a person who is experienced and has the right gear could do well there at night, like Bama from the AL board. I've seen he plum wears them jokers out after the sun goes down at his home lakes!
tried it recently but the moon was pretty full and not many minnows showed up and caught on 4 incher but didn't give it a big try. was just tied to my dock. there are plenty of youtube video's of it that make your head swim with clouds of shad and schools of crappie swimming thru, so it does work in right circumstances.
I've done it a couple times on Sardis. Used the submersible white light. After a hour you got plenty of bait fish. Turn off the light and they all hit the surface. Dip up a few turn the light back on and start fishing with them. I've caught a few nothing to brag about. It's different and something fun to do with kids. I tight line with a hook and sinker. You can use a bobber but to me it was easier to feel it than see it. You will be the only boat on the lake. Turn a light on in the boat and mosquitoes will come and join you.
Lol, okay calm down, I take a few pics in the morning, I was out yesterday and let's just say it looks good. It definitely ain't muddy, neither is Grenada or Enid for that matter, Enid may have a bit of trash, but none of them I would call muddy right now, we get a good rain that will change. And guess depends on where you drink water from, go to Greenville, MS and that stuff comes out the tap brown. Either way no need to get upset about it..
He can't help it!!!!:Rofl
Man ain't nobody upset, just saying what I've seen, all is good. Where I live here we have lakes for the residents, and you can see most times 10 feet deep or more, that's what I call a clear lake. Nobody is upset....:cheers2
OK guys if yall say Sardis is clear, then what do I know, I haven't seen Sardis in a year. Everybody go night fishing and tell us how many yall caught.....:highfive
I jig fished a bit at Sardis yesterday, you could see a jig about 4 ft deep, and that was way up the lake

It's been pretty peaceful but this night fishing would be a lil more fun if we had someone to talk to %5BURL=http://s1175.photobucket.com/user/jeremyaldridge1/media/IMG_0467_zps5ltijoxc.jpg.html%5D%5BIMG%5Dhttp://i1175.photobucket.com/albums/r621/jeremyaldridge1/IMG_0467_zps5ltijoxc.jpg%5B/IMG%5D%5B/URL%5D

Have caught the crap out of em in Grenada spillway at night. Have worn em out on a fish house set up for night fishing on Beulah years ago. Never tried it on the main body of the COE lakes from a boat. At least it would be a change. Prob not as hot either.

Sardis has been pretty clear this year. Not like the mountain lakes but clear for a flood control lake.
BRM
We night fish quite a bit up here in ky. The lake we fish is a flood control lake and it's no where near what I'd call clear. On average, I'd say you can see a jig about 18 inches down. Minners are usually king at night over jigs but not always. We do pretty well usually. Here's some from a couple weeks ago Attachment 270983

I think some kind of cover is key. We've tried and never done real well in open water. We anchor up usually in 10-15 fow over some type of brush. Drop the green light down a couple ft under the surface. We also have an automotive fog light attached to a 5 ft pole that hangs at a 45 degree angle out over the water. That light is essential in my eyes. It lights the inside of the boat up, and it also draws and keeps the bugs out away from you. It also aids in drawing the plankton and baitfish.

You guys are discouraging after seeing the U -Tube fishing under the green lights at night. I made an under-Water light that has a 10 Ft long strip of green LED lights .. my Brother can't put the boat on the Trailer in the daylight, and stumbling around He would be swimming as soon as the sun went down... I retired the light and it had never been used. Fishing the outside edges of the light is where the feeding goes on and minnows that have signs of injury are what the bigger fish look for. Like I said I have not used mine but it does make a difference of how clear the water is and moon Phase. The only way to beat the Heat is to fish when it is cooler.
Few days ago I put in my 2 cents on this thread.......Everybody is different but anyplace I have been it is about the same whether it is clear, muddy, deep ,or shallow...A bright light at night after an hour or two will attract bait fish (usually shad) which in turn attracts the fish that feed on them.It does not matter where in the nation the lake is......If you really want to know , then get a light and prove/disprove it....
Wish someone would turn their caps off so I can read what they enter.
Years ago before there was a size limit and a 50 limit for crappie we would set 2 to 3 Coleman lanterns with a knotted cord between 2 or more timbers out from Water Valley Landing. 25 yoyos per person, 2 in the boat at a time, 50 yoyos. First 2 out in the evening had to set everything up, last 2 in the morning had to take everything down. Usually a party of 30 campers at the landing campground before it was rebuilt.
That very well may be the case. The Jackson Yacht Club has several halogen and one older high pressure sodium light that put off a fair amount of lumens but they are fairly high above the water. Lots of catfish and a few gar show up but I haven't caught a crappie. Granted, I haven't done it enough to warrant a satisfied experiment. I do know that some crappie call that area home year round just about. I have killed speckled trout under similar lights on the coast many times before. I think in the right location and setting it could be effective but I have run trot lines at night for catfish and it seemed that just my partner lighting his cigarette attracted the attention of every skeeter on the lake, lol. I think you could do pretty good under the Hwy 43 bridge on the Rez with a submersible light.

I use to have a place on Reelfoot Lake, Tn. years ago, and imo one of the best lakes in the country for all around fishing. One would think that lake would be great for night light fishing for crappie....nope not at all. :dono
