if you got a Academy sports near by they have some good batteries in the fishing department that would do just right for you; a group 27 battery is what you want and they got a good deal on them !!! or go a AutoZone they got group 27 marine batteries for a fair price too!!!! hope this helps !!! stay SAFE and have a Happy 4TH of JULY !!!!
Check with your local NAPA store we have a rebate Visa Card promotion that started the First of July. They can save you some money on a quality battery.
Its about physical size....but also its about how many cranking amps....and amp hr. capacity the battery has. Look on your battery.....it should have a group number on it....24, 27, 29. The bigger the number the more capacity. So say you have a group 24 and it seems to get weak running two fishfinders and live well .....then a group 27 would be better. I always use group 31 for my trolling motor batterys and whatever size the cranking battery is that comes on a new boat....ialways go up one size when i replace it.
According to the Marine Application Guide .... your 115Merc only needs a battery that has : 450 CCA (525 MCA)
That would be (in most cases) a group 24 size battery.
My cranking battery is a EverStart Marine Group 24 (500CCA) and my 1999 90HP Merc 2strk outboard will practically keep it charged up from a normal days use (sometimes less than 30mins actual running time). It runs the big motor, small 2d sonar, and the livewell pump (when necessary). After the initial cranking at launch, it generally fires right up with a quick turn of the key for the rest of the day.
If you have/use more components (pumps, sonars, lights, etc) and have the space to hold it ... the recommendations for a Group 27 Marine Starting battery might be a consideration.
What G and Pappy said. I got the best price on my series 29's in Wal mart. Lots of other places carry them, so do some price shopping first. I also think that a series 27 would do you well. If you take it in and out of the boat, look into an Optima gel battery. I got a super deal on mine and it's smaller in weight and size than a lead/acid battery. You will find them higher in price but may better suit your needs. At 6 months old your other battery should still be doing the job. How are you charging and how often? Not supposed to leave them in a depleted state and charge after every use. On board chargers make life simple. If you don't have one it's a good addition and makes life much easier.
I think the group size of a battery comes from the length plus width plus height. They can have different weight and
number of plates in a group size. Don't write this down.
I would buy the G 29 if you have room. Better be safe than sorry. If your battery is only 6 mos. old they should replace it free of cost, most marine batteries have free 1yr. replacement.
I have been shopping for three new batteries for my boat...mine are 6 and a half years old now. Best prices I have found is at Academy Sports.
Thanks everyone. I went with a 24, because it was the same size, and toy all taught me what it was!
