2D versus DI .....

no comparison in my opinion ....I never have understood why anyone would bother to strain the eyes and stare at DI ? turn on the fish alarm and activate the beeper and turn on the fishee symbols in all 3 sizes and go to ketchn fish and NOT trying to decide what is down there is my thing ....let the lil computer do the work and get after them fisheez .....I know lots of serious fisherman will disagree with this opinion and I am not trying to get anyone upset , but for those of us that like it simple , just run the beginners mode .....takes the guess work out right quickly it does :Rofl .....
I almost never look at the DI except to decide why in many cases it shows nada when there is a pile of fish on a pile of something .......I am sure I could probably tune it in and adjust contrast and etc etc etc ....but I wanna ketch fish ....my time is limited on this here planet AND on the water you know and there are lots a crappie to be ketched ......:biggrin
anyway the main point of this post is to let the folks that dont have the time or high end electronics know that it can be pretty easy to use a graph in the 2D mode .....
so for anyone who struggles with the electronics they have , set it in 2D and go ketch ya some fish ....:highfive
a shout out to Fle Fly as well , without the Go Go in pearl my day would have been tough , my buds in the boat beside me struggled to get bit while I put a smack a doodle on the crappie lips with a 1/16 ballhead and a small go go minnow ....lift and slow fall and wait for the line to go limp ...set hook clean fish ......
all depths of water from about 12 out to about 35 held fish on timber in good numbers ...but they were VERY finicky...
kept a few because the freezer is on empty and could have easily kept a limit if I wanted .....
most of the takers bit at 16 to 18 foot deep no matter the water depth BTW ....
hit it by myself in my boat and met a few buds on the water as well , 3 hours from 3 pm to 6 pm after the storms passed Saturday morning in dfw ....

I like 2D better also, Ketchn. My wife fishes in the back and she likes 2D on the Helix 7 screen because she understands what she's seeing.

This 2D discussion really got me thinking. At first I didn't agree, but the more I think about it.....gonna give it a try next time out. After all, I can't argue with the amount of fish you catch!

But don't tell my wife that I don't need the latest and greatest with all the bells and whistles!

Awesome fish! I'll have to disagree though. I haven't looked at 2d in so long it would look foreign. I have my contrast turned up a lot, but still low enough I can tell the difference between the fish and brush. That is why I like it. With 2d that is much harder and fish id is not something I trust when it's looking through a bunch of limbs with 40 year old technology. Not sure on the birds, but on my garmins about 85 percent contrast is about perfect. Very bright and easy to see.

Valid point, glad you brought it up!

Di is the best thing that came along for crappie fishing brush, once you learn how to use it, it will tell you which piles hold fish and which ones dont, 2D will not show you that. If you fish for white perch, it will show you the perch stuck on the bottom,.

I will have to try that contrast setting on my garmin. I bought my sonar all excited about DI and side imaging, but now use 2D 95% of the time. Do love side imaging to see bluegill spawning though. I get that i can see a nice tree on DI, but when i see the fish arches on 2D my confidence goes up

Every tool has it's uses. 2D sonar is best when it comes to finding fish under your boat but it doesn't show the structure and bottom detail that fish use as their habitat very well. DI/SI is best at revealing that structure and makeup of the bottom. It does show fish, as little blips, but it can be difficult to distinguish them.
Just because there's no fish there now doesn't mean they will not be there at another time. If you know the makeup of the bottom, where the structure is, and the behaviors of the target fish species, all these tools will help you catch more fish.

When I see the white dots on my DI my confidence goes up, if your not seeing crappie on your DI something is wrong.

2D will show a lot of stuff as arches, which is not fish.

It is mainly inexperience and no patience to learn on my part. I see all kinds of dots on DI at times...some go away depending on settings and frequency. I dont know which ones are fish right now. I need to play more with contrast and experiment with it all. Just so little time to fish i hate to play with sonar. I have never looked on DI and seen something i was sure was a fish...except on other peoples screenshots here occasionally

Spend some time watching YouTube videos on what fish look like, what shad look like, etc. The 30 minutes it will take you to learn will save you hours of time fishing in unproductive areas. Di is not rocket science. It will take you the longest to guess what size/type of fish it is you are looking at. Their size on the screen will change some depending on how zoomed in the screen is (10 ft of water vs 30 ft of water). White bass are the hardest to tell from crappie until you drop in and see what bites. It is easy to tell a big gar or catfish though.

Most of the major electronics companies will recommend that you turn off the "Fish ID" on their units. The problem with this feature is that it cannot differentiate between fish and floating vegetation or debris - sometimes. This is why you might want to learn what a fish looks like via arch interpretation. Much more reliable as to positive fish location, using 2D. This is what the pros do as well. JMO.

I kinda thought some folks wouldn't like this post ....but after looking at graphs of every possible design for 45 years ...yes EVEN the ole paper units ....AND ....up to 3500 dollar big screen units they just made this year .....I am still sticking to that's a fish and it's on something ......:highfive
The main point of the post is you can use 2D and do very well with it , mine don't tell stories ....if it goes to beeping and a bunch a lil blue fish show up .....I typically go to Ketchn ....when it gets quiet and the blue fish leave so does the bite ....
Simplicity at its best .....

I like simple and your solution is simple, it catches fish. I run 2d and di side by side to get the benefits of both.

Its acording to what lake you are on.Just 2d on KY lake,and I would be in trouble.si and di are great here,without them I would catch alot less fish.The thing is spending the time to learn how to effectively use them,ive probally side scanned 60 hrs total this year and have marked alot of structure.

Never used the "beep" function, even when all I had was b/w 2d units. Never trusted the "fish ID" symbols to really show me that fish were present, after seeing them on the screen, even when I was sitting in 5fow and could see bottom. I think I may have seen "fish ID" icon(s) in about 3-4 instances where I actually caught a fish at that spot/depth. And I can't say that I EVER saw fish arches ... generally just using the units to show me depth & possible cover.

Once I got my DI unit and learned how to tweak it sufficiently for my purposes, and was able to easily identify exactly what was below me, the whole idea/need for 2d sonar went out the window. And I was not impressed, nor pleased, when my DI only unit was discontinued ... and 2d sonar was added back to it (under a new model name).

But, hey ... if it works for you, then good for you !! DI took the guesswork out of interpretation for me :

hahaha, the lowrance manual tells you right up front that just because you see fish symbols and hear beeps does not tell you for certain that there are fish below, just something in the water besides water :Rofl

Cane pole don't you know fishfinders were invented by weather men. They both show things that don't exist. :Rofl

Somewhat depends on your style of fishing I suppose but you are really missing out on valuable information vertical jigging if you aren't running them(2d and DI) side by side. I don't use the fish symbols though. If I could only have gps/mapping and one sonar though it would be 2d 200khz hands down though.

I vote side imaging. If you ever start using it... O well you will see what you have been missing. Why look at what is under the boat when you can see that plus an area the size of a football field. Try it, you'll like it.

I have it and have used it for years, wouldn't want to be without it but if I had to drop a sonar technology fishing Kentucky/Barkley I would still drop it or DI as long as I could keep gps/mapping and
200khz 2d.

After all the discussion in this thread, i tried giving DI some more attention today after mainly using 2D so far this year. I used the 85% contrast mentioned here, on my garmin striker 7sv, and think that might have been the ticket to make things more clear. I could see fish on/in tree tops. The fish did not look pretty....just bright white vaguely football shaped returns mostly, but where i saw them i caught crappie and bluegill...none on trees where i didnt see them. And i could pick them out within branches on the more complex tree tops.

I like 2D and have had good fishing with it looking at arches as fish, but i think i will be running DI a lot more in the future. Thanks for the tip/discussion

Wicked Tuna ....my bad .......and yes I run a split screen 2d / di at the same time ......sometimes I see the popcorn dots on di , but most of the time I watch my 2d and listen for my crickets when I am busy ......my lil crickets typically tell the truth .......but to say I have a clue would be wrong , I just like it kind of simple and easy .....
