Looking for info, Does anyone know how the stripers are currently at Brookville?
We marked what I felt was possibly some stripers last time we were there, and got me thinking of trying to catch a few.
They were too deep for 300's. I have some spoons I thought might work, I don't have a down rigger.
Stripers will hit in line spinners as well as all kinds of large spinners. Also crankbaits. You can use inline trolling sinkers or snap weight sinkers ( can be ordered from cabelas) trolling up to 3 mph. DNR has been stocking about 65,000 fry per year in Brookville as dnr concentrates on walleye stockings more than anything in Brookville. Stipers also like deeper cold water in the summer so you might try closer to south end of the lake in or near river channel where you locate the most bait balls. Trolling gets more stripers than any other method. Check out some YouTube videos on how to catch them and experiment from what they can show you.
How do you figure and manage depth using the weights with cranks?
Snap weights uses a 50/50 system of you letting line out and snapping the weight on the line at 50'. Off shore tackle has a chart, at 1.5 mph, 1/2 oz about 10', 3/4 oz 17', 1 oz 20' deep, 1.5'oz 22' deep, 2 oz 25', 3 oz 32' deep . Running 2 mph 1/2 oz 6', 3/4 oz 9', 1 oz 12', 1.5 oz 16' deep, 2 oz 17', 3 oz 24'
Running 1 mph 1/2 oz 14', 3/4 oz 17', 1 oz 20', 1.5 oz 24', 2 oz 25', 3oz 32' and all depths are figured using 10 lb mono. You could always get the trollers bible which is deadly accurate with all information. Prescision trolling app is good,for most crankbaits also as I use it. Watch your rod tips and they will tell you when your dragging bottom but stipers will be more,than likely suspended around bait balls or near Creek channels or found in deeper water and schooled up.
I did see a chart showing weights and depth, but, How do I figure the crank into that? If I pull a 2oz weight with X amount of line at 2mph, I get X depth by the chart, but what will my crank add to that?
If I run weight say, 3-4 feet in front of the crank that is.
You add the depth of the various crankbait your using to the figured depth chart at the figured approx. speed your running.
Here is a pushing chart for crankbaits crappie fishing that can be figured pulling to a degree.
Hmm, So a 2oz weight shows 15ft deep at 2mph, with 50ft of line out.
A Bandit 300 shows about 11-12ft with 50ft of line out. You think a 2oz lead a few feet in front of the 300 would get it to 25-28ft?
Sorry for the questions. It would likely be easier to just rig up and pull a crank until it drug bottom I guess. But if I can make some use of online charts it might save some time on the water.
My goal is gonna be getting down to 25-30ft I'd imagine.
Your chart/sonar will show the fish depth. Experiment. Also, bandit has some walleye stick baits that seem to run deeper than most. I have 75-100 older bagleys that run a lot deeper than most new cranks. Salmon Lures run deeper than the cranks we use also and they work on stripers so check them out. Spoons will work also. Spinner baits for bass fishing work. Large baits are used as the old saying, large catches larger fish. 6" swim baits in white work. But, I have caught 12 pounders on 1/8 oz chartreuse curley tail jigs on 6lb test on 12' crappie rods before. Takes about 15 minute battle to,get them to the net with finess, so they will hit anything. I have caught 20 lb on Mansfield (cecil Hardin) which has the state record of 40 plus I think. Friend of mine caught one this spring there 3 oz shy of the state record. You might also check out using planer boards, easy to use. I use them on occasion with 8.5 trolling rods and 10lb power pro on okuma line counters to,get deeper than the normal 20 lb power pro I use.
I've always had a ton of luck pulling live shad on boards.

Why were we thinking alike??? LOL. My next comments or bait suggestions was going to be using a throw net, netting live shad out of the lake your fishing and using them. Done it before myself but had delayed my statement. Keep me posted on your Prairie Creek chase. :cheers2Quote:

Will do, its in the works. If you don't have boards you can still catch fish free lining. I've got a buddy who pulls bucktails over there and does decent. Those fish are hard to catch unless you stay on top of them. It's a day by day bite, kinda like early in the year crappie.

I want to pick up a net and try it, saving my pennies for a new Helix unit first though.
I think I'm going to grab some big plastic shad and try those behind eggsinkers to get the depth I need. Hopefully we can hook atleast one. Going out early in the morning, if the walleye bite is off we will try it out!
Well, We didn't get skunked atleast. We caught 2 (two..) fish trolling this morning. We caught several more white bass throwing a spinner into the herds when they were hitting topwater. so that was a fun bonus.
We pulled the baits over good piles of fish, over and over, with not much luck.
I had no confidence in what depth we were fishing. I used a chart I found online for weights/line out and depth at 1.5mph or 2mph. I used 2, 1 oz egg sinkers, and a 4-6ft leader followed up with a 7/16th oz 4" swimbait. I used the 2 oz chart to try to fish about 22-26ft. Later on I tried to drag bottom, and it seemed like I was much shallower than the chart figured. Tried to bump bottom a bit in more detail to figure out depths but couldn't really tell what was going on.
Atleast it wasn't a total failure, We found a striper!

Hey! WTG! It's a start as Stipers are hit or miss most of the time especially in Indiana. Some of your southern lakes like Cumberland have big ones, but they also have the big water too.

Day before yesterday, dude fishing below Williams Dam on East Fork of the White River caught a 17lb Striper using minnows below bobber. Salt Creek dumps in White about 5 miles above Williams and Monroe Res. Feeds Salt so there is every imginable fish in the river that is also in Monroe. Just a FYI.
Eager to get back- I now have a cast net, and thanks to my lovely wife, a Helix 9 SI. We actually braved horrid conditions sunday just to get out and check the helix out a bit. Threw the net, caught some (tiny) bait. Pushed buttons on the helix while the crowds pushed my buttons.
I'm still searching for the best method to use. I'm planning on shad with 2oz weights, I don't believe I will need to even troll them? Videos I've watched have left out some of the key info, but I recall the one the guy had his baits and lead showing on his screen, so that would lead me to believe they were stationary- or trolling very slow?
You can troll shad on boards, but if you get a good drift I've caught them just dragging them through the water column. Be ready for the catfish!

We got out this eve after my wife got home, but I was unable to catch a single shad lol. I didn't waste a large amount of evening trying though, my wife is typically eager to catch big stuff and doesnt like to mess around. So we cut our losses and turned to playing with the new Helix and pulling some huge rapala cranks I bought at Rural king on clearance for $3.98 each. DT 14 shadraps, all in the natural shad color. Huge cranks! Luckily I had rigged my rods with some mustad quick clips walmart was getting rid of dirt cheap, so it was a quick swap from the 2oz trolling leads and circle hooks over to cranks. I've never been a big fan of lots of hardware, but the quick clips are pretty slick.
We trolled the same points as before, and had little luck until the sun started to fall. We got into some crappie, catching 4-5 nice ones, a 3-4lb channel, a 16" walleye and 2 stripers. The last of which was in the 3-4lb range. Big enough it caused a little trouble guiding it in, and she got it snagged on the other back rod I had pulled in in an attempt to avoid a tangle. The dangling crank got caught up on the fish at the boat, and it actually broke (cut?) the other dangling line off as I tried to net the fish. Maybe it wrapped and the gill plate cut the line? So we got the fish, but one of my clearance cranks went in the water. We backtracked and found the crank though so all was good!

Used a guide in Tn he would find schools of stripers usually around 25-30ft deep and would jig with live shad the fish finder he had would show the fish coming right up to the bait caught lots of fish
