The lake is turning over! Nothing biting:banghead
Was is a turnover or phytoplankton bloom or zooplankton bloom? I got reports last week of a phytoplankton bloom in the upper part of the lake.
Best I can tell it was a algae bloom, I was out there Saturday and Sunday, Some of the most lime green colored water I have seen on Conway in spots. Fishing was decent both Saturday and Sunday. I was BASS Fishing ad there were a few biting. Saw some perch jerkers filling their live wells. Catching bream about as fast as they could reel them in.
Yep lately seem I am always in wrong spot or at wrong time! But enjoy just being out there!
Probably talking about Chuck? I drove around the lake this afternoon and checked out the lake. Definitely an algae bloom. Unfortunately some of it may be cyanocobalamin bacteria (bluegreen algae). This isn't the good kind of phytoplankton. I'm going to collect some samples and ID the species under a microscope. Then I can confirm.
Yup, Chuck told me the same thing. Be good to know what it is the water is sure green
It's safe. It would have to be a major cyanobacteria bloom be fefore we potential could have problems.
I did find some suspected cyanobacteria cells in the sample that I took but it looks to be in a pretty low density. Not harmfull right now. If you start to see very dense blooms like the picture below from Harris Brake earlier in the spring, let me know. Thanks.Attachment 268593
That's how it looked inside the horns of Lawrence landing Sunday, But it was obvious it had blown I from the main lake and just stacked up there.
I will go take a look. Thanks.
wow, that looks like Newport Lake when I go there to play golf every July. It has totally taken over one side of the lake over the last 3-4 years. I will be on the lookout when I go. Will probably hit the water tomorrow morning.
It is trigger by high amounts of phosphorous in the water column and lake bed and normally warm water. Not much can be done in the lake to prevent it.
Or eradicate it.
It is in most lakes in small amounts. It isn't an issue on Conway right now.
well, if you can't do much about it, or eradicate it, it just seems to me that in the long run, it will take any lake over. kinda like mississippi kudzu :scratchhead:(:dono
Dang I hope it ain't as bad about spreadin as kudzu!!!!! :yikes
mixing it to a 50-50 concentration of bleach would probably set it back a bit.
Yes but my Clorox stock would go up!!
I went yesterday and did not see any of the algae bloom in the areas I fished. I fished from 9 am - 7 pm and managed 3 keepers. Not a great catching day but after 5 weeks of no fishing I enjoyed it anyway.
thought i saw your truck at the ramp, but left a bit before you did. i fished from bout 8:30 to 6:45. had one nice keeper size crappie, but let him go, 6/8 dinks, one 4 lb flathead, let him go, and missed at least three other keeper size crappie right at the boat using some new jigheads (not gonna be using em much longer if i keep missing fish on em though)!
i did not see any algae either, but was mostly out in the middle of the lake.
it was hot as all get out, with almost noooo breeze, whew!!
I fished Adams and Green lake area all day Monday through Wednesday and didn't see the algae bloom in there either. Caught many dinks 8 to 9-12" but only had six keepers for 3 days , pitiful for me. Was sure hot out there though! caught several good flatheads and blue channels so least I didn't starve plum to death!
i always throw the catfish back. stink too much when i am cleaning them. if i want to eat catfish, i will just go out to a catfish buffet --- much cheaper than fishing for them :Rofl
I plan to head that way in the morning. I know it is going to be hot & will put them in the shade. Hope to find a few of those magic trees. More than likely I'll do my usual thing of fishing 9367 trees for the day. But you know what? I'll be fishing.:biggrin
Go get em Pac!! Just think, it won't be long you will be looking at different trees and have your bow in hand.
Chris
Got to the ramp at daylight & put 2 keepers in the boat on the 1st brush pile I tried. What a great start. Then until 8 pm it was short fish after short fish with a rare keeper now & then. I ended up with 6 keepers & went home happy, hot & exhausted but I had enough for two meals. A few bites were serious thumps but the majority were very light. I hooked some kind of sea monster but lost him in a log or something. I don't know what it was but that rascal did some pulling! I'm guessing a catfish.
It was without a doubt hot. I brought 2 jugs of water with me to combat the heat. At 8:30 I noticed a leak in one jug so I decided I should drink that half gallon even though I wasn't thirsty yet. I had a whole gallon of water left but as hot as it would get I didn't know if it would last the rest of the day. I figured I could ask a homeowner for a refill if necessary. The water was hot too. The fish shouldn't be greasy on the plate because they were definitely pre-boiled.
