Which planer boards are the best ?
Offshore Tackle

Too little info to make an answer. It all depends on what you are pulling behind them. I use one made by a friend on Chickamaugua for longlining that is only about 6 inches long. I use Opti boards with flag kits for my cranks rigs. Off-shore has made some changes to their small board that makes them much more user friendly for jigs and roadrunners.
Opti has the regular size and now they offer a med size which is much nicer for our type of pulling. Offshore has good birds but usually more expensive. I'm using one call planner float. And sidewinders. Lots of options out there. Best thing is try to fish with someone who uses them. Get a little experience then research what others offer that might suit you.

Other than getting lines further away from boat what's the advantage to using planer boards?

Depth control if I had to guess, especially in shallower water. My only issue with planers is when you get a busy day with short fish, it just adds to the workload.

I use the side winders that a member here invented, except I made them myself using his plans that he posted. They'll work with a half oz weight & a 300 bandit under them.
I use the off shore OR12 with a tattle flag to pull cranks. They are a little big but they work. I went with them because I also use them to stripper fish. I think that there are better boards than the OR12 if you are only going to use them for crappie.
The 2 things I like about boards is that you can get the bait away from the boat and when you find out what depth the fish are at you can set all your baits at the same depths with less tangles.
But Bill is right about them working you to death.
