Looking at a President, but don't know if the 6920 size or 6925 would be best for a 11' vertical brush rod. I know they're pretty close in size, but wanted to hear from some that may have owned both.

Both have small arbors (spools). think bigger spool to get more line casting ability.
I guess my question would be what makes you think that quality and price reel is necessary to begin with?
I mean were not talking about doing any casting with that setup, just pulling some line off and dropping a jig.
About any of the cheaper reels would work fine for that. Even for trolling, just how good does the reel have to be to bring in
the type fish were after? I am considering a 6920 for a new rod I recently bought, but it will be used for casting, and I haven't
sprung for it yet either. lol
You're right.
I have a Shakespeare spinning reel or two that are very cheap reels and have lasted me over 20 years. I could also pick up another Wally Marshall ultra light spinning reel for $30 for this rod like I have on my 5 foot rod, but I don't want to. Or I could just sell this new jigging rod and use one of my short 12' trolling rods for jigging. No wait, I could actually just get a cane pole and use some old mono stripped from my frog rod and then have zero money invested. Nah, I think I want to spend that extra $15 and get a President reel that I know will likely last the rest of my lifetime. Who knows maybe my son will appreciate all this garb I have accumulated since it will likely never wear out.
I don't guess you have any comments on the 6920 vs the 6925 size difference?
Don't own either ... but, what I would do is find out the weights of each, then add that much weight to your rod (@ the reel seat) and see which one balances the rod on your finger (with your finger under the front edge of the handle).
If either or both weights tend to pull the rod down towards the handle, then that's not a big deal (unless it's excessively heavy & drops like a rock - in which case you'll need to find a lighter weight reel). But, if the rod tip end tends to drop, with those weights, then I'd be looking for another reel ... because a tip heavy outfit is cumbersome to fish with and wears on your wrist/forearm, which will make using it very uncomfortable.
For a brush rod I'd go with smaller one. My 25 is a great reel. I'm more than impressed with the quality compared to all the other spinners I own. Even the ones that cost way more money. Don't think you would or could go wrong with either. Like Pappy said balance is the key.
Another vote for balance above other considerations. I have a 10'SHSS and it balanced perfect with a Diawa Sweepfire that I paid $12 for when they were first released. Not saying that you need a different reel, just take the rod to somewhere that sells those reels and see which one works best. I have a 6730 and 2 - 6920. I find the 30 a bit big for anything I do for crappie, but great for a light bass and intercoastal rod for my way of fishing. My rod has a rear reel seat and a touch the blank cutout in the cork and it balances perfect so that you hold only the weight of the rod and reel, not holding the rod tip up all day. That means everything in that type of rod. I don't know of a President reel that I like better than another, just which size fits the bill. Hope you find what you want.
I have some of the older Pfluger feels that have the rosewood handles. They are nice smooth feels. Have a few Lews speed spins also. It's whatever makes ya happy.
I also agree on balance. I love the president reels!!
You may want to put it on another rod some day, I always try to go with value for my dollar.
Thanks for input
I have two 30's already for shakyheads, drop shots and weightless creatures for bass.
I have one of LEWS, Wally Marshalls 50 series (I think its a 50) and its very, very tiny. I wouldn't want it on anything but my 5 foot ultralight and it even looks strange on it. Prob just gonna go with the 20 since it noticeably lighter.
The 25 fits a lot of what I would use but I don't have any of those yet. The 20 is the ultralight and very small and light. Something I thought of after posting last night was to try other reels until you find the balance that you are after. Most reels, somewhere on their package or in their advertising, state the weight of the reel. Then just get the one closest to that weight and you should be good to go. I have several other reels that I tried that were the same size. Some had a composite frame and just didn't balance. I put on El Cheapo and it was a match. Can't argue with a little dumb luck. Good luck with it.....Skeet.
agree with the balance, as stated by CP. Personally, I would not go smaller than the 30. I do not like the small spools on the 20-25's, the tight coils, and line twist possibilities, are why. You may want..at a later time..to put it on a casting outfit..larger spool will do better. ALSO..this is for everyone too..Amazon has them on sale, check it out.
I have #6920's on two 9' B n' M rods and another on the 7' SHSS. I jig, cast & drift for crappie with all three of these Pfluegers. Great reels. I have no problem casting with any of them. Have been doing that for a lot of years. Spool is not too small for casting. However, for your application, I don't see where spending $50.00 on a reel - as opposed to say, $20.00 - is going to be of any benefit to you.
[QUOTE=fiveeyes;3436122]agree with the balance, as stated by CP. Personally, I would not go smaller than the 30. I do not like the small spools on the 20
What he said. I have a 20, 25, and 30. Noticeable difference in line coil between spool sizes. If you aren't using braid, get a 30 if compatible with the intended rod...
If all you're going to use it for is holding line, and you won't be fishing sixty feet deep, get the twenty. If you're going to use line heavier than six pound test, and using 1/32 oz jigs, you will get line coils on the twenty. 1/8 th and bigger, you'll be okay. The presidents are good reels. I have five.Only two twenties tho. The twenty five are good all purpose size.
Hello: As far as making your outfit balanced and you have a favorite reel that seems too light you can get a balancer butt cap that has several weights you can add to adjust and balance it out. Really makes a big difference. You could add it yourself or have a rod builder do it. Good Luck O -R
I have one 20, two 25's and four 30's. The 30's are my favorite of the three and the same price as the 25's.
Pflueger gets an A+ from me. I own many. If the balance is correct I recommend the size 30. Many benefits to the larger spool...helps minimize tight coils and memory issues. Just my 2:twocents
Just hit Academy and low and behold they had a 30 and a 20 both with red display stickers on them in opened packages. They said 10% off, but I didn't figure it was worth saving 5 bucks on a reel that been messed with by the masses and/or dropped, so I picked up the new 20.
Compared the Pres. to the Wally Marshall 75 for $30 and they looked similar, but the bail wasn't as thick and the line ramp was just basic among a few other differences. It may have had one or two less bearings as well. Would have bought the 25 series President If they had it, but they didn't. According to Ebay these President reels used seem to trade just a few dollars off from new, so if the 20 deems too light, I guess I can put together another dock shooter for my son or just sell it and pick up a 25 series.
The Mitchell 310 was a very nice feeling reel and very smooth, but it was a heavy little thing. It may have balanced better, but it weighed almost as much as my 30 series ABU rocket that I bass fish with. It was strange to be so small, yet so heavy.
Hammerhead, if you ever get it in your head to sell that 20 down the road, I'm first in line. I have 2 and could stand a couple more and not have my feelings hurt. Hope it works well for you.
I have a 6920 on an 11' BnM SHSS and like it. Puts balance point right where I want it.
Quality reels for sure
I have a couple of the 6920 and a couple of the Lews lazer lite and think I may like the Lews better. There all on casting rods, but honestly I believe you would be fine with either one. But the Lews is about half the price.
I have three. a 6920, 6925, and 6930 . Some say line twist is bad but I personally have very little problems with any of them . I use the smallest(6925) when fishing bay springs in north ms. No casting involved but fishing(very clear water) 22-30 ft. deep .So to answer your question ,if no casting is done 6920 would be my choice . Not to sell the 6920 short on casting because for 2-4 lb. test it is good for casting ,especially tiny baits . The 6925 is my favorite as it is a do all type reel . cast 1/32-1/4 road runners, beetle spins ,ect. The 6930 even though it is technically an ultra-lite it's main purpose is float/fly or tight lining for bream/redear .
I use 25's as i like to use 6 lbs fluoro line
I have 20s and 25s, they both work great casting or dipping for crappie. I have many of their series and absolutely love them. Can't go wrong with the Pflueger President series.
I have 3-6920's. I love em!
Fishin shallow where I live, even trolling isn't too far a stretch.
Spool size never really played into the game, for me.
Now dock shootin, I use a little larger spool. Old Mitchell 304 I think, the round gear case Mitchell .
I have gotten very good service out of my two presidents, both 6920"s but balance is most important as pappy says.
6930 or 6935 They are not as bad to through a loop with the bigger spool. after u use a 30 or 35 u won't go back to the little reels. I have 5 or 6 of the pflugers 2 are presidents 6935 like both they are my go to rods . I don't know why everyone thinks u have to have a small reel to reel in a Crappie. The rod is where action is. I use a 7' St Croix panfish rod with a 6935 President with 6 lb line if i catch a 7 lb cat i have no problem reeling it in. If i dock shooting i use a shorter rod. Cub48
Pflueger makes a President Series, Arbor spool reel. Just for those with line coil concerns. I would likely try one, but have not, run across them in the stores. I don't like buying reels without a hands on inspection, first.
