In reading the article, they made a serious mistake by pumping gallons of gas into the rod holder. To make sure there was no spark of electricity to start a fire, they were taking the leads off the battery. Just last week I was taking my connections off my battery and something was still on, so it made a little spark. This is what happened to these guys--a spark was created taking the wires off the battery and the gas caught on fire. Good intentions, just did not execute the way they wanted.
The owner did this? Hope no one was hurt. I want to say it but I won't, best kept to my self! :scratchhead
How could they mistake a rid holder for a gas tank?
Believe it or not it's happened more than you think. When the cap is removed it looks a lot like the fuel fill hole on those boats is all I can figure. It does on mine and I guess if you were in a hurry, talking or distracted some other way you could do it as crazy as it seems. The fuel dock is no place not to be paying attention.
I think two of the guys were airlifted to the burn center at Chapel Hill.
I was in the area when this happened.......alcohol was involved!
I saw a guy do the same thing at the BP station in Hampstead a couple of years ago. He got about 5 gallons in it before he realized what he was doing. they left the station and I never heard anything so I'm thinking they got away without any damage !!!
Hopefully, they're better off than the boat is. 28 gallons is a lot of gas. I hope they aren't hurt bad.
I don't know how many times I've seen people filling their gas tanks & smoking at the same time too. Yikes!
