The males were guarding the beds but hard to get them to bite. Next weekend with the full moon on fri. will the females go on the beds and make the males more aggressive.? What are the thoughts from you experts.

Haven't seen a bluegill on a bed that wouldn't take a hair jig tipped with a waxworm under a small bobber. Have you tried that?
interesting .....maybe slim jim time ? I hear that works ...and if they wont bite you get to snack till they do ....
Here in upstate NY to fish/play with the grandkids for the summer. Normally 1st week of May but later this yr. by 3 weeks. Got both boats running the 2nd week but because of weather they have not been wet yet. Fishing from banks at local SMALL lakes and state ponds were so/so first week out with nightcrawlers. Waxworms arrived and have been slaying them now. 2 places post spawn but the 3rd is just coming on. Strange cause they are not that far apart. Did manage 3 nice crappies last time out. One of the boats is going out next week depending on weather. Flyrods with ultra light reels spooled with yellow 6# test line. Glow in the dark ice jigs with slip bobbers works all summer long.
I'm not an expert, but my input would be to make sure that once you've located the bedding area, back off far enough away that you can't see the fish and then let the area rest a few minutes before casting to them. I've sometimes had difficulty catching decent size fish when they can see me. Usually bedding males will bite well in my experience with the only exceptions being when I've been too close to them. Any bait or flashy lure seems to work for me on the beds with crickets, wax worms, and 1/32 or 1/64 oz jigs and spin beetles being my favorites.
use your long crappie pole and dipping any type jig does the trick, just drag it thru beds and that is usually enough to get all the big males you want or need.
I've ran into some really spooky males and usually I just move on if they won't come back quickly, but on rare occasion if I spot a really nice one I'll just leave my bait in the bed for a while and pick up another rod. It's always worked, but its not a C&R method as they end up swallowing my unattended offering the few times I've done that.
They want hit a red worm (FORGET THE MALES ) ,Cast a fan shape away from the boat the females are close . Fish on bottom . JMO. :fish

Im trying to avoid catching the females cause they are full of eggs.
I use my dippin rod with a small aberdeen hook and a 1-1/2" piece of night crawler with no weight or bobber. Just flip it out there and let it sink to the bottom (most of the time it doesn't make it before they pick it up). Went out on my lunch break yesterday. Fished for 30 min and came up with 11 gills between 8-9", 3 redear/gill hybrids about 10", and one redear that was 9". Boss thought I was nuts, but the wife was awful happy for fresh gill tacos. Fixing to load up the canoe and find some more.
what size lake is this ? My biggest problem is keeping the numbers down .
