A Little Info To Share On Electric Fillet Knives

Hi All
Hope everyone is off to a good Memorial Day Weekend and I'd like to express my thanks for all who have served in perserving the greatest place to live and raise our families!
Thought I'd pass along what seems to be an answer to a long search for an electric knife that is working great.
In the past I shared that we had used with great success the MT Pirahana blue and white knife when they had the Cuda blade available but since discontinued selling them and we like everyone else have been chasing a new solution.
We have tried multiple different knives and we're currently using the new American Angler with the shark blades and have had decent success with them. They have been a little warm when run for extensive periods and the blades at times seem to catch on the skin when removing it. The cost at approx $90 each is a little pricey but as the old saying goes you get what you pay for.
That was until I took a shot on a knife I saw at Walmart.
Back in the old days we used exclusively a Black & Decker knife that worked great until they changed the engineering of the blades and that change caused the blades to spread when you put a little pressure on them and scales or flesh would get in between the blades that kept them from operating correctly.
So I'm standing in Walmart and notice a Black & Decker knife Model EK500W on the shelf and it's priced at $15.96. My curiousity made me but it and give it a try. This was 3 months ago and the knife has cleaned well over a 1000 fish and it is still working beautifully.
It is working so well that I went in to buy 3 more just to have as a backup in case the motor or gears give out to find out that they had dropped the price to $11.96.
I wound up going to 3 stores in the St Charles, MO area and bought up 24 of them.
A bunch to store for back up and a bunch to give away this Christmas.
At this price it's less than the cost of the AA replacement blades.

I've been using the "ELECTRIC FISHERMAN" by Mister Twister for 30 yrs. now and they
are whole lot better since they beefed up the motors and made them more durable and longer lasting. :twocents

Good timing. I have been using the Rapala one that Wal-Mart sells and am not real happy with how slow the blades oscillate. Slower oscillation seems to tear the meat more, rather than cut it... Might have to try the B&D now. :)

i also bought this same Black and Decker model a few weeks ago. i also have the american angler with both the straight and the shark blades ($90 + extra for the straight blades) and i will never again use anything other than the B and D.

Did you find this knife in the Fishing section or in Housewares?

Thanks for the tip, I picked one up today for 11.96. I plugged it in and was amazed by how fast it ran. Now to catch some fish to try it on. I've been using a Mister Twister or American Angler and not satisfied with either.

I have a brand new in the package mister twister and one I used quite a bit of the same model.I also still have out in the garage the slow oscillating,expensive Rapala knife.Have used a couple models of American angler several years ago.Thought I was happy as a clam......A buddy proved to me I was losing about 10% of my crappie by using the electric instead of using a regular knife.We sorted through our catch one day and found two fish of identical weight.I used the electric and he used the regular knife.We put our fillets on postage scales and believe it or not my fillets were real close to 10% lighter.The difference is meat loss around the ribs.I was a bit faster with the electric but not as efficient.It's been 6 or seven years now and I have not used an electric since.To each their own....

I bought a B&D a couple of monthes ago, and I couldn't hold onto it vibrated so bad. I returned it. Wonder if I just got a bad one....

like my Mr. Twister as long as blades are sharp.

I would guess that the gears might be bad causing the vibration. If the knife is a new purchase I'd take it back and exchange it. The Piranah knives that I mentioned above have plenty of power and strength but the blades did not perform well after they stopped selling the Cuda blades. By far the blades are the most important part of any knife's success and so far the B&D's are doing the job for us. If we had any input with manufacturers it would be to combine the best of both worlds - the Piranah or AA knife with their beefed up gears and the B&D blades. Who knows maybe their listening!

Been using AA with shark blades for many years. The knife is great but they have changed something with the blades. Last few sets are bad to gum up.

I am a fan of the black and decker also... good knife for the $$$

Specseeker, I returned it and got my money back. I know that vibration is a common problem with cheaper knives. I once found Cabelas Pro Guide's on sale for something like $9. Bought 6-7 of them things...after the first one, the rest were sold at a garage sale. I've seen my dad use the same B&D for the last 20 some odd years, on the same blades. But then again, things are not made as well as they used to be. I'll definitely pick up another to try though.

Couldn't pass up such a hearty recommendation. Stopped by Walmart in Madison yesterday and picked up one. Shelf price was marked at 18.96 but scanned at 11.96. Now I need to make time to go catch something to try it. Thanks for sharing.

I believe that is more because of how the person fillets the fish. I use an American Angler but I don't cut out the ribcage. The way I learned many moons ago was to run the blade along the ribcage. My fillets come off the fish with no bones and the thin strip along the rib cage attached. Several of my friends cut out the rib cage using both manual and electric knives.
We had an assembly line going cleaning hundreds of Oscars we caught in Florida. They had one guy on each end cutting out the rib cage on the fillets.
I told the guy down from me he wasn't going to have much to do because when my fillets come off the fish, the rib bones stay on the carcass.
I do notice I seem to be the only one doing it that way. I learned that method when I fished for bass and the body was thicker than panfish, usually.

I bought this exact model in Walmart ( to have a back up ) after reading this thread and I'm sorry to say I am very disappointed. It is very flimsy and is no where near the knife my mister twister is.

I also bought a Black&Decker from Walmart. I was very disappointed also with it. I will just stick to using and buying the American Anglers although I think they are very over priced and the handle do get pretty hot when filleting a bunch(20-30 or more at a time) of crappie. Let me also add I do cut through the ribs also where some people don't.

I’m actually pretty pleased with mine. I guess I need to clean more crappie!

Tried the Black and Decker. I thought that it was crap. Best current option by far IMO is the American Angler with the shark blade. Awesome.

The shark blade is the difference maker for cleaning panfish.

I burned 3 of those EK500W knives up last spring/summer. If you are cleaning 5 fish, great. If you are cleaning 40 fish, smell the burn! Walmart told me to quit returning them.

I wish Milwaukee would just make a cordless knife my drill batteries would fit ... that would be something. One can wish.
Maybe they will see this thread, take the hint... Dibs on being the rep to sell the line :biggrin
