baiting a hole
Does anyone have much knowledge about this? I live right down the road from a little river and I know there are whisker fish in it. Been thinking about making something that I could put some kind of bait in. Was thinking something to put deer heart and liver in and let the catfish find it. Anyone have any suggestions.

We used to live close to a nice sized creek and I started going down atleast 5 evenings a week and throwing out a few pounds of cattle cubes in a nice little hole. after about a week you could go down with a a little chicken liver or bait of choice and do pretty well on channel cats. A lot of guys use soured grain to bait holes. I can say the cattle cubes are much nicer to deal with since they don't stink.

Onion bag weighted with a few rocks, and a rope to retrieve it,bait it and toss it out a few hrs before you fish it.you can check your own game laws for legality. If you chum with something bloody, make a pcv chum tube,( U-Tube pcv chum tube )bait it with dog food, and bloody bait, toss it like the onion sack,it will sink on its own.

You know I use to catfish all the time all over the place and I never did chum . I did however fish a lot around barge loading operations that loaded dog food and grain...it draws em in that's for sure. I have been thinking about trying chuming myself and I was thinking about just using commercial fish food in the sinking variety. And making me a dispenser or chum bag out of mesh wire about the right size. I keep thinking the foods with fish meal may be the best....maybe even cat food rather than dog food, course they make dog food now with fish but it's the expensive kind. I did chum one time for carp with a can of corn by tieing a string on it and punching holes in it with a screwdriver...I threw a few whole kernels in to....that worked good. It would probably work for catfish too....I use to catch cats on whole kernel corn once in awhile.

WE used to use Ice cream buckets of corn . Fill up 5 buckets on saturday . starting monday evening put one on a flat coming out of deep water . we put one out everyday after that ,always filling up the one we brought home . You can use dog food in cans placed inside an onion sack for a kicker .

I use the Cattle cubes on the channel edges of a Lake, close to the old tree lines in about 20 ft of water. use the depth finder to find hard bottom. Throw the cubes in a 10 to 15 foot circle of the tree then go bait two more spots before you start fishing. also put some deer corn out with the cubes .... I have found fishing the same places as the larger fish are caught lots of tiny bait stealers move in and take over for a while. I use Night Crawlers for bait and a kernel or two of caned corn help the Cats find the bait. We use our 10 ft Crappie poles with 12# test and catch mostly channel Cats but did catch one 22 pound Flathead.. Louisiana does not allow the Bream to be used for Catfishing as Bait. We usually catch 25 to 30 which is several meals and plenty to clean

Where do you get range cubes? I've never been able to find them in my area. I've always had to use soured wheat.
-
Tractor Supply, Rural King, Farm and Fleet, Orcheins, all sell them in the midwest.
-
Yes !!! any place that handles Animal feeds carry Cattle Cubes, also known as Range Cubes by most Farmers in this area... Usually about 12 Dollars for 50# bag, good for several trips and Deer Corn is about $7 for 50#

How many cubes do you throw out in a spot?
-
How big of holes wound need to be in a pcv chum tube?
-
I will measure the holes in mine, and let you know.If I remember correctly,I made mine to seep out a bait cloud / scent cloud vs actually allowing the bait to escape, this in my opinion would keep fish at the chum pipe longer. If the bait could escape, too quickly, the target fish would soon disparate once the bait was gone......just my feeble opinion.

The Channel edges are not working rite now as the Cats have moved shallow to Spawn .. Fishing Boathouses most Have nothing in the gut at all and the fish have lost weight.. those that bit 8 out of 10 fish got off at the net, none had took the hook deep .. when the water gets hotter the Cats will relocate deeper at cooler water has good Oxygen

how long do you wait after throwing in the cattle cubes to fish

We usually dump 5 gallon buckets of soured grain on stumps or creek ledges in the lake . I like to bait more than one spot . If I can't visit a spot ever day or two , we have drilled a 5 gallon bucket full of small holes or burlap bag. Then fill with soured grain and a good sized rock . You can tie on a long line and jug to retrieve so as to refill . Also scatter loose grain on that spot when you can fish . But if you can be there ever day or two just scatter loose grain forget the bag or bucket . Seems like the longer I bait the more Catfish stack up . My favorite grain is Wheat or cooked white rice if I can find scrap rice . Another option and clean is cattle cubes or Sweet feed pellets like you feed horses . Just pour in dry . We do this ever summer with great results .
