Good to know.....course I never catch the limit....too many to clean at one time...
I kind of thought that's what the law required, but like Bruce it's never a problem for me and I don't freeze any fish.
"gene"
Looks like it is time to have a fish fry!
Where it gets murky to me is who can legally claim or possess a limit of fish? I do the majority of the fishing in my household so do those possession limits extend to all members of my household? There's a big difference in legally possessing 100 crappie and 800 crappie....

Just checked with my game warden waiting on answer
Once you get home you can gift the fish as you please. A license is not a requirement. You, your wife, and all children can count. This law is designed to combat market selling. GW is not going to go to your house. He would need a search warrant anyway. How would he get probable cause? Before someone says a GW does not need a warrant, your domicile is not the same as your boat, vehicle, or camp. Possession limit is for the field or camp prior to arriving at your domicile.
The operative word here is "field" possession limit.
Are they going around checking people's freezers? I'm just wondering being an Alabamian.
I agree that for the GW to check your home and your freezer, they would need a search warrant. This would require probable cause. Now how would the GW establish probable cause? Follow you around in the boat for days, plus follow you home to your house, watch you clean the fish and then take them inside.... I doubt it.
I am a retired LSP sergeant. I have GWs I have hunted and fished with for over 40 years(state and federal). We had these discussions numerous times. If you read the pamphlet from W&F, it defines possession limit. Pay attention to field, camp, commercial cleaning facility, and domicile(home).
The W&F pamphlet states
"possession limit"
"No recreational anglers can have in their possession more than twice the daily bag limit of any species of freshwater recreational fish, EXCEPT that anglers may have up to three times the daily bag limit of black bass (Micropterus spp.) below U.S. Highway 90 in coastal Louisiana. Anglers may have up to 100 crappie in their possession at Toledo Bend Reservoir"
Nothing in it I can find about "field, camp, commercial cleaning facility, and domicile(home)" in the pamphlet. the state statutes does mention these as in searches with out a warrent.
Louisiana Revised Statutes, particularly Title 56,§325.
Daily take, possession, and size limits; freshwater recreational fish
B. No person shall have in his possession more than twice the number of fish specified in any paragraph of Subsection A, except those specified in Paragraph (11). No person shall possess in excess of the limits specified in Paragraph (11) of Subsection A.
The article I linked states "Technically, yes," said Adam Einck, media relations officer for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. "Each person is only allowed a two-day possession limit."
We have a couple of issues entertwined here. One poster wanted to know who can gift fish to, the answer anyone. You can legally possess only two day's limit per person. You could have 100 sacs for yourself and another. 100 for your wife, children etc. The issue is covered in more detail in Federal regs(wardens say that is their guide). It goes into more detail ref domicile, etc. I never gave the fish angle much thought as I only wish I could have 200 for my wife and I, lol. I am stating real world application here. It is the same as a speed limit tolerance. The law says one thing, enforcement is another matter. I will check with my guys and see if they have a source for y'all.
They can search my freezer....I give some away, and the rest I eat because God made them things delicious!
I cleaned out my deep freeze this weekend. I've been planning a fish fry for our church for months and despite the downpour Saturday we had a great day. The weather cleared up and many sacalait and catfish got baptized in grease!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8b171ea3ee.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6766a4b328.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6886f1b3b6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b534f76645.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7e2eee44b3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...79fbd03942.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...28904a8204.jpg

incident involving some new friends up at my home place couple guys fish the same place everyday and were catching limits then going back to same place and doing it again. what is insane? it is right below the local conservation garage and offices! course they had telescope and watched them catching many many crappie and then leaving and then coming back to same spot. So they went to the one guys house and busted them with several limits of crappie for a day and wrote multiple tickets. did ask to see his freezer and he let them in to see it, wrote him up for not properly having the bags of filets marked where they were caught, dates and names on it.
This man is a very generous guy and cooks up a big fish dinner for local volunteer fire companies annual fundraiser to benefit community. Not a bad guy but he catches more fish than most can imagine.
I believe the key is "probable cause" . I had some instances while in the millitary that really explained that term to me. If you were to have the police bring a GW over to search with out a warrant, anything that turns up that is not game related should not be admitted as evidence. If a game violation was found along with any other infraction, it is all grounds for charges. The main fact is that most people who get in a hole this way have no means to legally fight it in court.
By no means am I a sucessful fisherman to have that much in my freezer at any time, much less catch a limit. Some thing has to happen or have been reported for "probable cause". Should a search be done at my home by a GW along with the police , with out probable cause, it would be illegal search and seasure.
