DO NOT USE BLEACH PUT A LITTLE PEROXIDE IN WATER BEFORE YOU PUT IN MINNOWS.
.
Years ago before I bought a bubblier I would buy minnows at Long Branch bait shop and they would live for days. They added about a tea spoon of non Iodised salt.
I have sanitized big vats by cleaning walls with salt..
I wash mine out without soap, then fill with city water and let it set all nite and dump it the next morning.I also use baitsaver with city water,it takes the chlorine out, dont remember which brand would have to look.

My troubles started about five trips ago, when I went to putting fifty in my FraBil floating minnow bucket, instead of thirty. Since then, I have noticed them gasping for air at the top within forty-five minutes if I keep the bucket in the boat, or just plain dying if I flop em in the lake... Since I have been buying a hundred at a time, this has led to losing at least half of them on every trip, when I keep that half in this bucket.. I first washed the bucket out with a mild solution of bleach, then rinsed well... No change. Then I tried dawn blue liquid, rinsed really well... No change. Yesterday, I tried hydrogen peroxide in a mild solution, and did nothing but pour it out and let it dry... No change. Still losing most of the minnows with a couple of hours. The water they come out of the tank in is cold, so I have been putting them in my ice chest out of the sun, and keeping them cool. Before this, I frequently kept them in my outside refrigerator overnight with no issues. I am at a loss to understand this, other than assuming that I just have too many in the bucket when I try to keep fifty now. Yesterday, we put twenty-five each in two separate Styrofoam buckets, and they did fine, while most of the fifty I had in the FraBil were dead when I checked on them two hours into the trip. Is all of this caused by the onset of warmer temps?
Yes, O content related do temp, y'all get that ENGLE, expensive, but doesn't kill minnows[emoji4]

If it is the bucket...why would they just start dying...I have used the same bucket for 5 years with no loss at all
I have no,proof but I think it's the minnow suppliiers. They have been dying on me too and use an Engels I ovnerheard a conversation at tommys about dying between the owner and the minnow man. They lost a whole vat multiple times this spring

Just as I suspected, it's somebody else's fault! LOL
I had similar problems in years past. Bought an Engel this year and haven't lost a minnow. When I get home I put it in the garage frig with the aerator on low speed. The batteries last about 3 days on low.
I've had an Engels for two years and these are the first Minnows I have lost. Had most left overs die every time. I have been able to keep them fir 2-4 days before

OK, went and bought a bubbler this afternoon. Will see if that makes a difference...
You know them insulated plastic tanks with wheels on the bottom that you see in gas stations that are full of ice and drinks. I have one of those for a vat. It's a bit of a hassle but after each trip when I get home I put my minnows in that. I have water, an aereator and baitsaver in it. I drain the water off my minnows before I put them in there. If I go the next day I just go get however many I want. If it's 5 days before I go, I still have minnows. I have had up to 3lbs in it for several weeks. I too use an Engel bait cooler and keep the aereator going on high and have a frozen water bottle I put in there to keep it cool. The warm temps will kill minnows quick! I had 12 dozen in my 19qt (4.75 gal) Engel and my buddy had 8 dozen in his uninsulated 5 gal bait bucket. 75% of his minnows died by the end of the day, I lost 6 minnows all day. They are expensive but they do their job. If u do start using a vat at home be sure to change out about 1/3 of your water every day or 2 and store them in the shade.
Gave the bew bubbler a test run, and it worked like a charm, with only one setback. It ate up two batteries in about six hours... So, back t the store, for the one that runs on 12v, at four times the price... It's supposed to be the one... Guess, we will see!
I have used the 12 volt Power Bubbles for 4 yrs with no problem. Finally wired it into my panel, and ran lines front and rear....works like a champ..if not running minnows, I will run both lines into my live well
My barrel is on the covered back deck. The bad thing is if it's 82 degrees then the water in the barrel is 82.
I placed a 50 ft coil of 1/2" plastic hose in the frig. Pumped out of the barrel and drains back in just above the water. It would drop the water temp 5 degrees at most. Things in the frig weren't very cold.
I placed a 15 ft coil of 1/2" plastic hose in the freezer. Pumped out of the barrel and drains back in just above the water. It would drop the water temp 20 degrees. Things were melting in the freezer frig wasn't cooling.
You don't see them much anymore. The heavy wire frame with multi sided styrofoam liner inside it. Minnow Life or something like that for a brand name. I found a dealer that sold the styrofoam liner with lid for a dollar, 6 to a case, so I bought a case. They sit in a 5 gallon bucket.
Academy Sports has a lid to fit the bucket with a flip service hole in the center, a hole for your air line. They were a dollar a couple of years ago so I bought a few.

Fish-D-Funk makes a cleaner for live wells that will work great for your minner bucket.

Dawn dish washing detergent, a good rinse and let it dry. Did it Friday night after mine started dieing.
None lost the rest of the weekend.
I use a 32 quart Coleman cooler that I punched a hole in the top of the main part of the cooler for the air line and used a big flat head screw driver to punch another one to have a place to hang my aerator
Knightshadow, I intend to wire this one in and find a way to store the lines so they are out of the way when I'm not using them. Center console is a great but with everything generating from the middle it can be hard to run tubing to different places... My big bait tank sits right next to the console, so no problem there. But, the minnow bucket is usually up on the front deck...
Depending on the brand of boat you have, there should be a rigging tube or channel coming from the console to the bow panel. Should be easy to catch a lead behind the panel. If not, you can tap the nav light wires up front and use the nav light switch to turn it on and off. Those wires only run the lights when they're plugged in the sockets. Those wires will run any other appliance off that nav switch as well, you just have to turn the switch on for the power.

I had a bait shop for a few years and we would have problems with minnows dying this time of year and I was told it is due to the stress of them spawning as well. We would always clean our tanks out with diluted simple green and rinse them well. I cleaned them once a week!! All 7 of them !! Don't miss that at all Also make sure you don't have any sunscreen or insect repellent on your hands , I've lost an entire tank full of minnows due to someone's kid sticking their arm down in it to play with the little fishes and momma just sprayed them down with bug repellent!!!
Slabo...never thought of that
Yep. I keep a bar of Ivory in my tackle bag. Once I have all the lines out I wash my hands before handling the minnows.
Another subject that you should know that I hear a lot of. My dies are rusting. My rely is, did you wash your hands before starting?
