I'm going to head out and try it sat or Sunday, I am wondering how the bluegills are doing. It will be my first chasing them in North Carolina and I'm not sure if it's too soon or not, has anyone else been after them?

I wouldn't mind doing the same. I got into some shell crackers on Buckhorn a couple years ago. It was insane, catching 20-30 in a row. I think it was closer to May when we caught them

I am right there with you LTM, bluegills is what I know and love from Michigan. And I have seen some massive ones down here in the North Carolina, it is one reason why I had to get a boat this year and get on the water. When I go this weekend I will make sure to let you know how I do.
A female friend of mine and myself caught some nice ones last week. One shellcracker was full of eggs and was around 2 lbs. Also a few gills.
Lots of shellcrackers on Harris. I catch those more often than bluegill on that lake.

I have always heard the first full moon in may is when the gill's lay. The shell crackers are always earlier, and with this warmer weather, it may be sooner than may when they start. Good luck when you go!
Thank you everyone for the help, the wife broke down and said she will go on Sunday so it will be game on then. Does anyone have any suggestions other than crickets for these shellcrackers?
Red worms are a much better choice for catching shellcrackers.
Is the general approach to finding fish just working shallow banks in coves and creeks? I may give them a shot tomorrow also

Ya that's what I do in Michigan, troll a stretch of shallow water and locate a few bedding locations then go back to the start and fish them. But if they are not on the beds yet then I will be kind of lost, haha
Well today was good in my eyes the wife and I went out and she lost interest rather quickly. However fishing from 0830 to about 1400 we caught around 20 or gills with only 8 being hand size or larger which is how I determine if they are keepers or not. Also landed a few bass and a really nice sun burn, haha. Thanks for the help and I appreciate it again.
Glad you found a few.
