Ive recently read two articles on weather or not depth finders have an affect on the fish when vertical jigging beds or brush piles. Are there days when the fish spook easily so that the waves sent down might be running the fish off? I'm not suggesting we catch every fish within a half mile of the bed, but does anyone find the bed, toss out a marker, and turn their unit off? Just a thought.

Sunday I was fishing a stake bed in 6.5' of water with the depth finder on and the trolling motor hitting the tops of the stakes and was still catching fish out of it.

I never turn mine off ... and I've caught Bass & Crappie in less than 5ft of water AND in the prop wash of the trolling motor.
I'm not all that convinced that the fish are "spooked" by transducer signal, anymore than they would be by the presence of the boat above them, or even the combination of the two ... especially on waters that have a lot of traffic & fishing pressure. Now, I'm sure there are times that sonar signals do "alert" the fish & maybe even spook them to some degree ... but, during those times, the splash of a jig or float or even the sight of those things flying overhead of the fish might also spook the fish (like in very shallow water and/or very clear water).
Pappy, I agree with your assessment on crappie not spooking but if fishing for redears, every bit of it is out the window. That is why so many folks pull into a spot and catch one or 2 redears then nothing. Spookiest freshwater fish I know of except for maybe Silver Carp.Quote:

Good question & excellent responses. I vertical jig exclusively and really have not seen the impact of the sonar or boat bouncing over the brush or the stumps. Bite might slow down a little, then next thing u know, you catch 2-3 in a row...for the crappie anyway. Can't be that aggressive with Bluegill or Redear though.
