crappie fisherman wear a PFD while fishing? I was looking at the inflatable PFD's versus the older vest type and starting looking around the lake and didn't see very many people with any type of PFD on while running down the lakes or fishing.

Everybody in my boat is required to wear their PFD when the engine is above idle speed. I provide vest type PFDs for my friends and clients. I wear an auto/manual inflatable.
X2 mrdux most people want it on by the time I hit around 60 MPH :)
I wear an inflatable if the water is too deep to stand up in or if I am moving faster than idle speed.
I've told this story before but it bears repeating. The first day I wore my new inflatable vest I put it on as I was launching my boat. I spent about and hour on the water while I was testing moving my ob up about an inch. I loaded my boat on the trailer and headed home and realized when I got home that I still had the PFD on. When they are that comfortable there is no reason not to wear one.
I wear one while running the big motor all the time. The rest of the time is 50-50. I always carry the truck keys. If I fall in my buddies have to haul me in or walk home.
wear mine when running the big motor. If the water is very deep I'll put it on. Wife will not let me fish alone also.
I often fish out of a float tube and always wear a PFD.
Just ordered a self-inflating type from Cabelas. On sale now for $99.00 with regular price of $149.00. Been a lot of years since I've worn one, but I figure, at my age, it's like buying cheap insurance. I use to be an avid swimmer, but haven't been in several years. And at 73, gotta start thinking about being around for the grandkids! :)
I learned from tournament fishing and have carryed this over to my personal fishing. When the big motor is above idle speed EVERYONE on board my boat wears a PFD. I carry inflatables for everyone on board. When I am setting rods or working in the back of the boat in waves or heavy chop, I wear my PFD. During normal conditions, calm, sunny, using trolling motor, I don't wear one.
When my daughter is on board, I ALWAYS wear one. I can't keep her safe if I fall overboard!
I have the inflatables and I wear mine anytime the main motor is running.
And don't forget to hook your kill switch lanyard to you (if boat has one) !!
My kill switch lanyard is ALWAYS attached to my PFD ... even when the PFD is hanging up in the closet at home. Just a subtle reminder for me to always bring the PFD, and wear it when driving the boat. :ThumbsUp
I have inflatables and wear them all the time.
i have an inflatable from BPS and put it on before I step in my boat and take it off when me boat is safely on dry land. anyone not having one on at all times while on the water is simply dumb .
I wear the vest type all the time if I'm by myself or with my two kids. I'll take it off when using the trolling motor at times when I'm with another adult.

If I am in the boat my PFD is on....and I have a rule that if anyone fishes with me they have to wear one.

Me as well. I still use the old, hot, annoying vest type. I like them in cooler fishing days as it breaks the wind to keep me warmer. If outboard runs vest is on. Passengers over 18 can decide for themselves on my boat.Quote:

Always, period. As a former Army swimmer even the most experienced can have an accident. Or, Some crazy boater races by you while on a laydown providing you a wake to contend with. I also do this to set an example for my son. Besides, it's an accessory for me. I keep a set of fingernail clippers on an extendable badge holder for cutting line.
I wear one almost all the time while on the water. I have the BP brand inflatables and don't see any discomfort. However, I did about crap myself one day on LOZ. I had been fishing for a long time in the rain and was running hard back to the ramp in the rain when the darn thing inflated.

I wear one always now...inflatable...big engine running or not..if I fall out with the terrova running...boat will get away from me.. .too old to swim very far
Just a reminder, I know in Kentucky if you have an inflatable it has to be on your body or it doesn't count as a life preserver, it can't be in the dry box and count as your one per person. A regular vest counts no matter where its at.
Does anybody else get irritated watching Crappie Masters TV and seeing the host take off like a shot with no PFD on? Any TV show should be there to set an example of how things safety related should be used.

A word of warning on the inflatables. Don't put a coat or jacket zipped up over it. If it inflates while you have a zipped up coat on the pressure from the inflation can get so tight around your chest to smother you.

I always wear my type II even in the heat. I find my life jacket makes nice fishing vest, nylon construction means no stuck hooks.
My daughter and granddaughter gave me a self inflating vest for Christmas. I have always worn a pfd while moving but I think the automatic self inflating may be a better for me at my age of 78. They got it at Cabelas when it was on sale.
It's almost all fishing shows. I wear one and make my son wear one. Then we watch fishing shows to learn...and, no pfd's :donoQuote:

There is a video floating around showing two guys running hot in a bass tourney when something breaks on the motor that causes the boat to quickly alter course, launching them into the water. The tourney rules required participants to wear pfds and have the kill switch lanyard attached. I never attached mine before, but now do after watching that video. The Lord knows I have made my share of mistakes in life and at the right moment anyone should have been the end. Because of that, I try to take all safety precautions I can. I have fallen out of a tree stand twice, once in an ice storm and once when my screw in step pulled out. Luckily I was strapped in. I do get very annoyed at people. Although I try really hard not to judge and respect their choices, there are several things that get under my skin because IMO they forget about the people who love them. Gun safety, wearing PFDs, safety harnesses, seat belts, smoking, drugs, riding a big boy bike without a helmet, etc. Regardless of my opinion, the fact remains people can make their own choices. These type of threads help educate ourselves on the risks and hopefully convince us to make better choices.Quote:

Marine4life, I had the pleasure of having mine inflate on me while riding down the canal. Let me tell you, it was a heck of a surprise. Once it was over, my daughter and I had a good laugh but at the moment, it was pure panic.
