What size/kind of hook do y'all use on a Bobby Garland baby shad? Me and my partner have been using Luck-e-Strike 1/16 oz hooks fishing on a dock and we can't hardly ever land a crappie that's in the 2lb range. Don't ever have trouble with smaller fish only big ones. It's like when we get them to the surface it just pops out of its mouth. Any suggestions?
I use #2 red sickle hooks on all of my jigs. They work great with Baby Shad and the bigger hook is great for lifting larger slabs out of structure. I use the jigs with the wire bait keeper.

I used #2 sickle 1/16 oz last time I went out. It seemed to slow the bite considerably so I switched back to the smaller hooks. You ever had that problem ?

I've cleaned over 200 crappie in the last 60 days so I haven't noticed a difference except better hookups.

They are fairly sharp out of the package but you know I've not looked to see if they are still sharp after catching a few hundred fish. It could very well be it. I'm having some #2s and some #4s in 1/16oz in the sickle hook poured and I know that they are sharp. I'll keep a eye on it. ThanksQuote:

1/16 OZ minnow heads with #4 hooks are the best choice. The fish completely engulfs the bait and gets hooked in the roof of the mouth as opposed to larger hooks in the tender lips. Sickle hooks work well due to the bend.

We like the #4 regular bends for the 1/16 oz. jig heads that we pour. Haven't seen any noticeable disadvantages.
I use #4 no need to go bigger. The bigger hooks give me a better hookup with the brush I'm fish not just the fish.

I use both 1/16 and 1/32 Oz heads with #4 hooks. I've found with the heavier weights the fish are more selective when striking. Line strength also matters. The heavier the line the quicker they let go. Try a lighter line if not already using it.

FWIW, I mostly use 1/32 jig with a #6 hook. I've landed bass to 7# on it. Very rarely lose a fish.

For everything fishing, like when I don't know what I'm doing next, I use a 1/16 #4. The minnow head Monks mentioned is also high on my list. Around brush I like a #6 and maybe a lighter head. I've landed some fish over 2lbs on the smaller hook, usually buried in the roof of the mouth. The sickle hooks are about all I use. I pour my own and like them so much that I bought 7000 in my first order. Lots of different sizes and both bronze and red colored. I still have some and still don't like using regular bend unless I'm adding a minnow. The bigger barb holds the minnow better. I believe that when you get your heads in, and maybe lighten your drag a touch, maybe two, you'll start boating those bigger fish. Try this; as soon as I think I have a networthy fish, I say "net please" and my partner gets to work. As the fish gets close the net man dips the fish on the first pass, not while you hold him waiting for the net to be readied. I feel that you only get one shot and you better make it count. We have all lost some dinner plate size fish at boatside, but if you lose a lot then you have to take apart the process you're going through. I think that if you try and lift one and the drag doesn't release then it's too tight, and those light membranes inside their mouth wont take the stress. I'll stop rambling now, and I hope this helps. It's no more than I was told back in '06 or so when a new friend named Jerry Hamilton, now gone, told me just this and it helped me a lot. He was truly a BIG crappie catching machine. Tight lines.....Skeet

Sharpen your hook. If it catches the little ,it will catch the large. Could gap it open a little but doubt it needs to be .
