I use braided line-20/8 on all my open face reels, closed face reels do not like braid. I use a 8# mono leader 2' long. This works great.
I don't know any that uses braid for trolling or spider rigging but like (trypman1) stated you would need to use a leader because of being able to break the line when it gets hung. Sure don't know of any reason not to use it beside cost and even at that you can order it on ebay from china at a low price.
Most crappie fisherman I know uses 6Ib line on all their reels, I do use braid on my cranking rods.
I tried the braid several years ago and did not like it for these reasons. It seemed to wrap around the pole a lot easier. If you fish where there are stripers they can cause a tangle that is impossible to get out. I went back to 6 lb hi vis on all my rods. Cheap to respool
I like the 6 lb hi vis mono also. Cheap. Easy to use. Easy to see where to put that line back out that you just reeled in. Sometimes I will use 8 lb too. Found a deal on a 8 lb big spool once. Color doesn't seem to hurt catch rates IMO. I respool often and as needed.
I use 6# clear mono on my tightlining and trolling setups. I've used hi-vis and caught many a fish, but I just have confidence in the clear now a days.

I use for 4 or 6 lb mono, usually the clear or camo Mr. Crappie line. I am not a big fan of the high vis, I have used it, but I just believe that the fish can see it unless the water has a hard stain.
Too many tangles for me to use braid. When I get a few rods tangled out comes the scissors to get rid of that problem and get back to fishing. Braid would cost too much for that. With braid I don't think you'd be able to untangle even the small tangles.
6-8lb hi vis only way to go for trolling makes it so much easier to keep up with the lines!
One other concern with braid is when you get hung up, if you don't get to the rod fast enough it can break the rod or pull it out of the holder in some cases.
South Carolina State law Section 206.3.5 states that Braided fishing line should not be used when trolling for White or Black Crappie from February 1st till June 1st. The penalty is $60.00 plus court costs for the first offense
Aw come on just having fun
Thanks for the info.I believe ill try some mono.I agree with getting the braid tangled together an cutting that high dollar line.most of all dont need no fine.:Rofl Thanks an God Bless
The Kid can afford to throw $50 non floating nests in the lake so despoiling would be cheap for him.
Got ya. :Rofl O just for the record it was a 80 dollar net that floated to bottom after one week.
My :twocents I use a high visibility braid 10lb to 2lb. I put a 5 feet 4 pound flouracarbon line. The Flourcarbon is so if I hung it will break off. Also gives me a little confidence the fish does not see the braid when it see it going by. I feel longlining is a reaction bite. Also with braid it stays on reel longer, I can untangle easier then mono. Also I put a black marker on the braid at 60 feet so my lines are out the same each time for depth control.
I thought that the braid floated and you wouldn't be able to get down as deep as you could mono. Like most, I use the hi vis on my trolling rods.
Brush Jumper, these guys might yank your chain some but usually they'll straighten things out before you make many mistakes. :) Good fishing to ya!
Crappie Kid and me use it, untangles much easier, easy to see, works well
I switched to 4lb crappie hi visit yellow on 4 out of 8 poles and the mono first try caught more then braid. Testing some more.
I guess it is what a definition of what a reaction bite is. One if it completes the action and takes the bait or if it moved off of its fat rear-end to take the bait and something in the chase changed its mind. Either way it reacted to the initial movement instead of the situation the bait is dangling in front of the crappie and it knows it is not going anywhere and it can sit and drink a Dr Pepper before it decides to take the bait.
A Dr Pepper huh! he he he rotfl
