John, first of all, an electric whole house tankless takes 3-double pole circuit breakers so you will need at least that many open spaces in your panel. Second, if you have hard water where you live, you will need a water softener. The tankless heating elements corrode very bad in hard water. They have to be disassembled, soaked in vinegar then reassembled about once a year or so. If you could go with a natural gas or propane unit, you would be a lot better off.
Got the space in the electric panel but gas may be the way to go, water is not hard so that is not as much of an issue.
How do I know which size to get???

I've got two natural gas on demand water heaters and love them. Retro fitting into an existing home will take some planning but may be worth the trouble. You are gonna need electricity to the unit because they require an electric igniter. It will also need to be vented if you are using a gas unit. I have two because my plumbing is separated quite a bit. I have a master bath and secondary bath on one end and kitchen, laundry, and third bath on the other end of the home. I have heard the completely electric models can be tempermental.

We had ours replaced because we paid out more on the repairman than we saved on heating over a span of five years . Our water is terrible by most standards . Maybe if you can work on it yourself or have an inside track on somebody that works on them it would be ok . Both are water tanks are inside and wrapped . I would go gas and call it a day .jmo(we had two brands ) .
We added temporary gas lines in 2 places when we moved in where we are and have talked about running it all together and incorporating in a line for a hot water heater so that may be the way to go.
Still need info on how to buy, how do I know what to buy?
It really depends on how many points of use. I put two in my daughters new house when we built it. One unit supplies the master bath and laundry room. The other unit supplies the second bath and kitchen. Just research and see how many points of use it's rated for.Quote:

Thanks guys, really only have one place to put one. Simple set up with the plumbing running across the back of the house, laundry room, kitchen, full bath and then half bath. Don't want to fool with anything that will have to be worked on every year so electric is out.
Rees if you go gas you will also have to vent it whereas you don't with electric units. Lowes has a 75 gallon gas unit if you need a lot of hot water. but most of the time a 50 gallon is plenty. That is if my sister in law don't visit you as she takes hour long showers and she can use up a 50 gallon tank of hot water.

Contact your gas supplier see what they have or can get .compare prices lowes/h depot may be cheaper .also check to see if they have rebates through the Mississippi gas board./ natural gas supplier Your size will be according to how many gallons per minute you want. Also you can get one for exterior or interior which ever you want . Rannai is the top of the line if you can afford it that the way to go.
