Cowan creek is as good a place to fish on the lake as you can find. We are coming down the 15th and will fish cowan creek and spring creek as well. IF your buddies are familiar with the lake there are a lot of good coves off the main river channel in the riverside area. WATCH FOR THE GUIDES TO POST.
I'll just follow you, what are you fishing in?:D Just kidding. I'm sure we will cross paths while we're down there. I'll be in a Tracker 175 with Ohio registration.Quote:

Long line trolling with jigs is the best method on weiss. There usually are several guides fishing in cowan so watch what they are doing. Leave mea few
Hey speck- Go to weiss almost every late february and always stay at pruetts. Great place to stay. Dont discount fish being shallow have caught many limits at this time of year around piers toward the back of cowan creek also try along rocks sround the bridge. Alot of people overlook shallower water this time of year. Watch the weather and water temp.!!
Cowan, 3-Mile, Spring, Dead Boy, Trotters, Waterhouse and Mud creeks are all good in Mid-March, and long line trolling with 1/32 oz. jigs on 6 lb. test line works well in 10 ft or less, can troll in as little as 3 ft of water and catch fish, until you hit a stump... If more than 10 ft. deep- try 1/16 oz jigs.
Weiss hot colors, year end and year out are: (if muddy to heavy stained try- bubble gum, black/chartruse, blue/chartuse, red/chartruse or plain chartruse. If only stained to clear try - blue/blue/blue, red/white/blue, black/blue/chartruse or anything with chartruse.) Good luck.
If you don't mind tellin', what style jigs are most productive on Weiss? Around here we use a lot of curl tail grubs and tubes, just about any soft plastics. I hear a lot of guys on this site using hair jigs. Never tried them a lot, except in extreme cold water when they are super slow.
It's been my experience that marabou tail jigs are the most widely used ones ... whether they're chenille body or Hal Fly/Jiffy Jig type, or whatever. Look around in the bait stores and Marina bait sections, and you'll soon see what the locals use the most ;)Quote:

I've caught them at Weiss, on just about every "type" of jig I own, using these methods - casting, trolling, dock shooting.
When trolling, just make sure the jig has a light wire hook, and you're using 6-8lb test line ........ or else, make sure you brought/bought a serious supply of jigs  cause you're going to drag those jigs across a whole bunch of "wood" :p ... luck2ya ....... cp
The middle of March is usually a great time to be fishing on Weiss Lake. The Cowan Creek area is a great place to start during this time and Pop Rivers also listed a lot of other great areas that are close by for you to fish. As far as the type of jigs to use, everyone has their favorites...but I fish with Southern Pro Hot Grubs on 1/16 or 1/32 ounce jig heads. If you do not have any, stop by and see BJ at the Weiss Mart Marina in Cedar Bluff to get them. They are the only marina on the lake that carries them and he has ALL of the great colors! I hope this information helps you out...See Ya' on the Water

Hello, I am thinkin' of coming down for my first trip to weiss the last week of March. Where is a good place to stay around Cowan ? Will have my 13 yr. old son with me, would this be the area to start fishin' at? Have fished Reelfoot the last 2 spring breaks and want to try somewhere different. Thanks for any info, it is appreciated.
I gonna be making my first trip to Wiess on 3-11 thru 3-15. Staying at J.R.s motel, I fishing with two others that have been there before. but this is my first, I'm so ready cabin fever has set in..... If any one will be out I'll be pulling a 20 ft lund with my black quad cab dodge Indiana plates and registration.... KEEP the Fishing reports COMING!!!!! Thanks.....

It's all weather related. But, if you're fishing out of JR's, you're in good company ... just talk with the gang, there, and they'll point you in the right direction. Best possible scenario that you could hope for, would be to be there when the longline trolling method is hot up in Little River. Come out of JR's and bare to the right, heading towards the big rock point across the lake, and look for a floatilla of boats :p .... that's what they'll all be doing - dragging jigs around/along the Little River channel (if they're still migrating).
This is what you will be looking for ;) :

Picture is of half a dozen boats longline trolling -- looking towards Big Oak Campgrounds. A hour or two prior to this picture, there were more like 25-30 boats in this area (but, I was too busy fishing to care about picture taking ... LOL!!)
If they've moved in shallow again ... be prepared to troll 1/32oz jigs in shallow water, or FnF cast to shallow flats (3-5ft water).
Here's the most recent report from www.jrsmarina.com :
Date: 2/26/2007
Level: 562
Normal Level: 565
Surface Temperature: 51
Clarity: Stained
Crappie fishing is "Good". Troll shallow flats with 1/32 oz jigs Black & Chartreuse or Bubble Gum.
(but, check it several times before you head there ... just to get more updated info)
If the lake has come up a few more feet, by the time you get there, then there's also the possibility of getting in on some dock shooting.
Have a great trip, take some pics, and report back on how you did ........ luck2ya ... cp
Awesome thread, cause we are headed that way also on the 14-18. Illinois boys draggin our toys. Stayin at JRs and fishin till the teenagers start whining!
Cya guys soon---ordered my hotspots map today and will be making notes. Can't wait to drown a few minners and lose a few jigs.
Thanks Pappy, I'm gonna try to keep an close Eye on this thread and some others for the next week.... Big Ed
Glad to here they like the Southern Pro Hot Grubs. I love 'em myself. Great colors and action. Trouble is, they don't sell them around here anywhere, so I have to order from the internet. I like the acid rain, bad blood, and john deer. What are the productive ones on Weiss, if ya don't mind sharing?Quote:

I was in the store on Sunday, and he was sold out of a lot of the colors but said he had them ordered. The colors you listed work really well here as well as Blue Shiner, Black/Blue/Chartreuse, Black/Red/Chartreuse, Blue/Chartreuse, Double Trouble and Popsicle. If you do not have some of these you should be able to pick them up when you get here. I hope this helps you out...See Ya on the Water!

i am heading down from ohio on march 23rd to film a show with russ from midwest crappie. we are only staying for two days. but we are coming back down on march 31 thru april 5th. i can not wait . hope to see some of you guys on the water
The fishing is hot NOW AND SHOULD BE FOR TWO TO 3 WEEKS... Talk to folks at Weiss mart Marina or Jr's Marina - both in Cedar Bluff, Al. Either place will point you in the right direction. However, at this time of year, just hunt the boats, and join in.....
