Good luck on your trip. It's a good way to start the new year.
Thank you for the luck wish Mr. Bill. I hope you have a great new year.
Wish I could but family is coming for lunch.
How was your trip on Northwest today hookedonpanfish
Constant rain over here today. Maybe tomorrow though.
@crappiejunkie67 it was a horrible day I got skunked and it is my second time there that it happened. So I don't think I will ever venture back to that spot again. Let alone enter the tournaments. I am high discouraged at that place for fishing.
Was the water still low?
I have never been skunked there so that is interesting.
Fished Buggs out of Longwood on Grassy Creek. Had another great day catching over 100 crappie with my clients keeping bout 3 dozen 10-12 inchers. Vertical jigging with a 5-10 second pause using BGBS on 3/32 oz jigs. Shades of chartreuse worked best for us. Brush in 20-30 fow that topped out 5-15 from the surface. Very nice day on the water with some fine fishermen!
The water was low I fished all around the bridges on 168 cross over and the tressel bridge with no luck. I was using jigs on with a white body and red head another with a pink body and red head and also a chartreuse with silver flake and chartreuse head all with 1/8th ounce weight. And even a Rockport rattle head with a shad colors bod. All under a float except for the rattle head.
DO I remember correctly that you are fishing in a kayak?
As a rule, when the water is low, you want to fish down river, around the park or further.
If you are fishing a kayak, there is a launch just past the park on Baum Rd. that would bring you closer.
I know you also stated that you were done with that river, but if you decide to go back, you may want to try a lighter jig head. I've had better luck with jigs 1/32 oz. and lighter there during the winter. Good luck if you go back!
i was there on the first, just fished the bank at the boat ramp. caught 2 perch, 1 shell cracker and 1 chain pickerel. just used minnows.
I don't plan to give up but am very reluctant to enter tournaments when I haven't figured out the river yet. And yes I am in a kayak a small 10 foot which makes it a pain to fish competently when you are limited on the tackle you can carry. And baits as well for live bait.
You absolutely need to fish farther down river.
I have NEVER caught anything around the bridges so I gave up on that area.
Can you put in at the NWR park? From there south is your best bet.
I went to the park but I saw that it's a trout fishing area and if I put in there I guess I need a trout stamp which I don't have nor want or have interest in.
Drive past the park and turn right on Baum Rd. About half a mile down on your right there is a public launch on Smith Creek. Its a short paddle down to the river.
This time of year people do well out in front of the park dock just west of where you get to the river.
If you launch at Bob's its a pretty long way.

Cool I will have to give it a shot. How's the fishing in the creek going to the river?
I have not fished the creek itself, it is pretty shallow. I have done well right in front of the dock at the park.
Cool I will have to check it out. I'm sure when it warms up the fish may move in there to spawn.
Speckle I was referring to the creek or canal before going into the river. I believe they may move into the creek to spawn.
I hear ya when is the normal spawn for nwr?
Cool thanks for info speckle
hey speckle looking at the map you provided how far of a paddle do you think it is to the park pier/dock?
No not bob's I meant from baum rd?
I never paddled it but I have run it under power but slow. I'd put it at just over a mile. I see kayakers coming out of there often.
Gotcha thanks for the advice.

Glad someone chimed in on that one because I have never ran that creek. Good luck, sounds like a haul to me by paddle.
