Dunwoody/ North Atlanta

My daughter and her husband just bought a house in Dunwoody and are wanting me to come down this winter/ spring for a visit ( and to help with some projects ) and I was wondering if there is any decent fishing within a reasonable distance. I'm not real crazy about pulling my boat through that traffic, but I will. Ideal situation is someone that lives or fishes fairly close that might want a yankee in their boat for a day. :pray I don't have the finances to hire a guide but am happy to buy gas and bait. Heck, I could even return the favor if someone wants to head north in the spring and fish walleye on the Detroit River. Thanks in advance.

you have lake Sidney Lanier and Lake Allatona . never fished them but some on here has i am sure they are deepwater lakes and clear water .

Lake Oconee is not to far either and one of the best lakes in Ga. That's my opinion anyway.

Nearest and easiest to get to is Lake Lanier, Dunwoody to Ga 400 North to lake not to bad on traffic depending on time of day. I have never fished it but there are several videos online where Crappie.com members have posted catching lots of fish.

Like Detailman said, you can't beat Lake Oconee or Lake Sinclair for fishing, about 90 miles I-20 East from Dunwoody. You don't need a guide, just put in a follow the fishing boats, watch what they are doing and introduce yourself. Fishing at Oconee and Sinclair is a social affair and we enjoy meeting folks. You can put in at Ga Power Ramps for $5 dollars/day or buy seasonal pass for $35 on both lakes. Lake Oconee Ga Pwr Swords Ramp is just off I-20 (near Blue Springs Marina) which is good fishing early in season or go to Ga Power Sugar Creek Ramp and put in at Sugar Creek which is directly across from Sugar Creek Marina owned by William Clark my oldest sons classmate, you can get anything you need at both marinas.

Ive been going to Louisiana for several years and staying with my son so I've had the opportunity to fish D'arbonne and Poverty point as well as several other smaller lakes but this will be my first extended trip to Ga. I've been following the reports and using google maps to check out the lakes in the area and can't wait to fish a few of them.

Sparty, I grew up in Grandville not far from Ionia. What lakes are you going to fish?

Small world, 2. I'm not sure where I'm fishing because other than the larger lakes I see on the map I don't know what my choices are. I would have a hard time being down for a week and not trying to catch something. Still not positive of when I'll be there but first week in April is a strong possibility.

PM me with the particulars of when and where you're coming and I'd be glad to take you out. Feb and March are great months for Lanier and Allatoona! Maybe catch a striper or 2 on Lanier. Ive caught some nice ones on 6lb test. And I wouldn't mind making a trip to Michigan for walleye. Fished Erie growing up so I DO know how to catch em. Pulling harnesses, trolling plugs, or jig fishing, I've done it all.

Try Ebay. I see them on there every once in awhile.

The Chattahoochee River flows right through Atlanta. I don't know where you'll be in Dunwoody, but you can't be more than a couple of miles from the river.

The Hooch is absolutely stuffed with trout. They stock rainbows but the browns reproduce naturally. The river also holds stripers and shoal bass (similar to a smallmouth.)

Much of the river can be waded, but there are also boat ramps. The closest one to you is the one directly below Morgan Falls dam. There's another at Azalea Drive.

The guy who owns this guide service is a friend of mine. I know you're not interested in hiring a guide, but it's a good intro to fishing on the Hooch.

If you have an electric only boat there are some good watershed lakes within an hour of you that fish well also. PM me if interested.

Thanks for all the info and offers. I do have a 12' flat bottom and also a 14' v bottom that I could slide in the back of the truck and bring down.I could bring oars or an electric motor, depending on the size of the body of water. To be perfectly honest I could fish from shore and be happy as long as I catch a few fish. The Hooch sounds like a blast. I do a lot of wade fishing for small mouth during the summer months and love the way they fight. My guess is your smallie tactics will work well on the native shoal bass. I'm no expert on them (caught a few by accident), but the river below Morgan Falls dam will be your best bet. There are a lot of crayfish in the river, so lures imitating them should work well. Small spinners (like Mepps) and Rapalas would also be good and would give you a shot at getting some trout.

I lived in Lilburn from 76-79. Have not fished it since then but at that time Stone Mountain Lake was loaded with crappie. That is actually where I started crappie fishing. We trolled one rod a pieece and caught dozens of crappie. The limit back then was 50/person and we got our limits many times. There was not a size limit then and the lake was over populated due to no fishing pressure so thet encouragedyou to keep all your fish.
Boats were limited to 6HP or electric only. I have no idea what it is like today, but it was a beautiful lake and seldom had anyone fishing it. We fished in the larger main lake, not the smaller one.
