Why? Theres no top on the lower unit. Water in the hub will not burst it. Liquid must be in a closed container to burst it open. I keep 25-30 boats on my lot year round and I've never drained them nor have I ever had one burst.
If you have a seal leaking and water is already inside the lower gear case, that's different depending on how much water has separated from the lower unit oil.
Just have always been told to lower your unit in freezing Temps because you run the risk of ice damage. However I will defer to the big dog of boats, good to know !

I've always been told the same thing. Better safe than Sorry. Mine ain't been in the water since August so I'm safe LOL
Put a mark on the inside of a bucket. Fill the bucket up to the line but make sure you can see the line. When the water in the bucket freezes it will swell up and cover the line but it won't burst the bucket. If you fill the bucket and put a lid on it, it will blow the lid off or burst the bucket because it's now sealed. [emoji4]
I come here for the free fishing reports and get a science lesson instead:)
When I take my out of the water when it is cold I make sure I trim it all the way down and let the water run out of it. I don't know if it is needed but would hate to freeze it up.
A few week ago when I loaded the boat to head home from the lake I flipped the switch to drain the live well and headed home. When I got home and went to get the fish out of the livewell it still had water in it. I thought that strange so I walked around the back of the boat to see what was going on and found that the drain had frozen it looked like a big ice cube.

[QUOTE=BigRiverMarine;3324730]You need a science lesson on low water. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!![/QUOTE
no, no, no, I need a lesson in ornithology and those walking ducks. LOL
Ornithology: The science of understanding the world, to find new ways to make conservation work, and to involve people who share our passion.
Or
Ornithology: The study of wild birds.
You never know what you will find on here.:cheers2
Really wasn't sure what this thread was gonna be about... Could not ignore it! But I was surprised to discover that is is about metrology and etymology.
ETYMOLOGY
Great one more word I'm going to have to look up now

This thread is a classic! Needs to be a sticky, lol.

I always let my motor down this time of year just to drain the engine block but other than that theres not much need.
Lol, one thing I never wanna hear another man say too me...... ever [emoji23] [emoji23]

I figured this thread was going in a whole different direction, on which I shouldn't have to experience in at least 20 years. This a lesson in geezertimology.

I have had several lower units (foots) cracked because Ieft them tilted up.

I bet they had water inside the lower unit. No way to crack an open container because there is no pressure applied to it when the ice swells. Like in a 5 gallon bucket. The water/ice swells up but doesn't burst the bucket.
Try a simple test tonight. Put a mark on the inside of an open container, bucket, jar, water trough, etc. Fill the container up to where the mark is barely visible. When the water freezes, you won't see the mark in the container because the ice will swell up the container, but it won't burst it because it isn't sealed and no pressure will be applied to the walls of the container.
The hub of your lower unit can only hold a small amount of water without draining itself out. You can't fill one up with a water hose because of the trim angle. It'll drain out the bottom side of the angle first.
If you guys feel more comfortable draining them, by all means Do It. Less worry and stress is worth it I guess. [emoji4]
Key words found in this thread-

I wore my google out with this one. Never found a Canebreaker tho. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
BTW---Catfish Skin does NOT work where I crappie fish. Ask me how I know this!!!!![emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]
I agree with Ree Guide :dono:dono:dono:dono
So much knowledge - so little time!!
Best thing to do is move to Miami or Los Angeles. Then, we wont have to worry about this or worry about these big words!
Maybe we need to ask an hydrologists on the property of ice

Elkhunter you may have that backwards.
So much time - so little knowledge.

Truth????? New engines should be fine!!! For folks that have older motors I will make you feel better!!! At this time take a clean container and place under your skeg. Drain your lower unit and refill it with new lower unit oil specific for marine use. At this time your engines lower unit is protected. If you dont prepare your motor and maintain it properly. Then you can go to the shop and give away your money!!! 3-4 tubes of lower unit grease/oil and your good. If you have an older engine your rolling the dice by just lowering you junk!!! Like papaw said grease is cheaper than new part!! Boy grease all those allemites and you better not miss one!!!
You can PM $$$$$
I've never been to the PM to get money, but I have been to the ATM to get some money.
Now, some folks have visited the BRM, and it took their money!

For the record, nothing was intended to lay blame or make it out that BRM did such a thing in real life, business or personal.
Trying to be funny sometimes doesn't work out the way you thought it would.
Bill, I apologize and hope you can forgive me.

I am pulling for BRM way not enough folks selling boats around here!!!! Hang Tough Mr. Bill I know your struggle. It's hard to believe that 40 years ago boats were sitting around bait shops every in MS!!! I wish Big River wasn't across the Big River!!! Talked Mr. Bill once on the phone 2 years ago. He knows his stuff and is a real nice Feller!! I did even hit him with my STATUS here on the Forum!!! I Hope to make it up to visit him soon!!!
