Power tilt and trim issues diagnosed

Well, as you know ive been having tilt and trim issues since getting my main engine serviced two weeks ago. Last night the motor was lifting very slowly again, i popped the tilt and trim fluid filler cap and tilted motor enough to get some fluid to come out, realized there was water in the fluid. After seeing this i did recall the last two time fishing seeing what looked like small amounts of oil on the water surface. I then realzed i must have a leak, so the moto was moving down and at that time was in the full upright position, i lowered unit all the way down and could see significant amount of trim and tilt fluid pouring from the left rod only when all the way down which explains why i didnt see the issue, at this point the motor would not go back up so i released the hydraulics and my neighbor and i manually lifted it back up to rest on the service tabs. Look like i have a bad seal. Not sure why this happened so suddenly, but called boat sales of lake wylie to see if they will fix it on thursdsy if i drive up as they treated me well installig my kicker motor. Doesnt look hard just dont have the rebuild kit or spanner wrench to remove caps.

Good luck hopefully they'll drain and replace all the oil so there's no water remaining.

Glad you found out what the problem is. I don't know if Lexington is closer but there are several shops over here that can fix it. You could bring the boat to me and I could take it and pick it up if you want to. Or you can bring it here Thursday and we can drop it off and then go fishing. Then pick it up when ready. Don, i will call around monday as most places are closed today. Since this is a normal maintenance thing, i bought the tools to do it myself, just need the kit now, i may just do it myself.

Micorps I've had to replace a couple on mine. It's not that bad.

sounds good doesnt seem like it would be.

Just be sure to bleed the system after you drain and refill.May take a couple of times to get the air out.

Yep my spanner wrenche arrived last night, have o sets of seals and extra, two bottles of tilt/trim fluid and extra end cap. I cant imagine how much therepair bill would be as the spaner wrencheandextra studs were $150 from marine tech and two sets of rubber sels and end cp were $160. I jus ope the end cap comes off easy as i had to order the extra end cap

Well I tried Brady's idea of using a piece of flat steel the size of the slot and unfortunately I still can't get the plug out to check my fluid level.
Not sure that is the problem but I need to check it to see. Sooner or later I am going to get it out.

yeah alot of the trim caps are on there pretty good, i fell on my butt literally when mine finally let go with the proper spanner wrench. Check marine techs website and let me know which wrench you need. Chances are yours doesnt use the same as my 115 but if it does you can use my spanner wrench. The spanner wrenches are 60 some bucks through marine tech vice 150-200 for an oem one.

I ran out of trim and tilt fluid bleeding the system, so hope to have mine ready to go tomorrow.

I think I paid $10 for my spanner wrench at Homedepot. It's one of the cheap ones but hey it worked. Micorps was that what they call your wiper rings that were leaking?

Ray, I had to get a piece of pvc pipe and used that for better leverage because mine were on tight. I also tapped it with a rubber mallet.

whats a wiper ring? Well boat is fixed and i get to finally go fishing tomorrow.

Tim, I hope this will be the end of repairs for 2016. I know you think Yamaha's suck. But they are really good motors. I've only had water to get into the foot once and it was caught early with no damage. Mine is a 1987 50 hp. I surly have gotten my money's worth out of it. Hope you get on the fish and give us a great report. Good luck :fish.

Actually i love yamaha, the center cap seal on the left trim rod went out. My complaint is this started right after spending hundreds on servicing and installing my electronics, as you can see from the other thread i finished that install also. Caught this quick enough where no other damage occurred. My next motor will be the yami sho 150. I am ready the next time the trim rods need seals. I also bought the spanner wrench for the tilt also.

Don, my grand mother always gave us castor oil to get rid of what ever we had in our system. If one of us had a runny nose we all got a dose. :yikes But I hope you don't go to that extreme. What ever you got I hope it goes away fast. Get well BUDDY!:highfive

Dawgg my grand mother gave us kerosene and sugar. My wife got sick about a week ago and now I got it. Don't know if it is the flu or just a bad cold. I am feeling a little better today, a couple more days and it should be gone.

Mine does not look anything like that. It is just a regular screwdriver slot. It is 1/2" slot and none of my screwdrivers are wide enough to get a grip without cutting out of the slot. I tried a piece of flat steel like Scooper suggested but that slips out too. I have stripped the slot trying to get it loose, I'm afraid. I have an impact drill so if I can find the right size screwdriver for it I think that would do it.

Well i bought the tool to get them off and renders the cap useless afterwards. Check on marine tech if it will work on yours and you can borrow mine, they are only $30 or so.

Micorps that wiper ring fits on the top part of cap, it's suppose to keep dirt from getting in the tube. Thay's what I've been told but I have a Evinrude.

Ahh ok yep there are three in the cap, didnt know the one was called the wiper ring but has a fitting name

Found a picture of my tilt and trip unit. If you look at the motor on the top left, just under it is a plug with a screw slot in it. It is 1/2" wide and it is the booger I can't get out. I am pretty sure that is where I need to check the fluid level.

Ray, that trim unit looks a lot like mine and the slotted screw is where you check the fluid level. And if it is like mine, be sure to raise the trim all the way up and activate the lever to hold the motor up and then bring the trim down a little to take the weight of the motor off of the trim. Then it is safe to remove the slotted plug and check the fluid level.

Thanks for the info. I figured out after some reading that I needed to do that, but I confess my earlier attempts were with the unit patrially tilted so it is a good thing it didn't come out. I now am wondering if all that pressure was not contributing some to the difficulty of loosening the plug. I will try it the proper way shortly and see if it budges.
I bought the outfit a couple of years ago but it is a 99 model and never had a wrench on it so the screws have really seated. Previous owner bought it new and it spent most of it's life parked in his garage.
