Does anyone use unweighted tube and other plastic baits on plain hooks instead of leadhead jigs?
I have used solid body tubes as gnats/ teasers/ critters . Heat the hook (bic lighter) slide tube on for a little color(jig will stay put better ) . We did this one day when a friend told us the fish were hitting best on a color we had very few of . Fish ate it up and have no problem doing this anywhere .I have never used this for single pole jigging .
I have done this with a fly rod. Works great.
I do this when they want a VERY slow fall. I also will take the smallest split-shot I have and crimp it just behind the eye of the hook to make a tiny jig out of a plain hook.
I've used 1" Gulp Minnows on SIZE 12 long shank hook under a slip bobber with a small split shot 6" above it an hook the Gulp through the middle of the back. When the jig bite stopped.
I've certainly thought about it, but just never followed through on it. Don't see why it wouldn't work, with the proper shaped plastics.
I was thinking you would get more action out of an upper bait on a double bait rig without the weight. I have always fished a single leadhead jig but will be trying the double setup this spring if I'm still around.
I use a caps n Colman type trolling rig pushing with a jig on bottom and minnow hook on top. I mostly fish artificial and use a plastic bait on the minnow hook and it seems to catch as many as anything else.
Check this out. Plain back hook. I call it a Slab Rig, works great here in Florida when long lining in 6-8 ft of water at about .8.

Thanks Slab. Most people put the weighted lure on the bottom but that defeats the free swimming concept. What do you guys think?
I love to longline troll a 2 or 3" soft artificial minnow on plain hook. Add a 1/16th shot above it 1'. Hook though the lips. Works great in late spring. .8 Mph. Add a nibble for scent
Slab, your idea is great, I use a similar version- I attach a fake minnow are BG Baby shad to a Crappie nat. Works great. Heavy jig on bottom with the weightless nat/baby shad above.
Plastic baits on a plain hook works great. I like the longer shank on the plain hook, seems to get the hook in the meat of the roof of their mouth, not in their paper soft lips.
Here is is in action today. Buddy caught a nice one using it.

Roadrunner on the front, and a Tru-Turn hook with curly tail in back (tru-turn hook keeps the plastic on better) . This one was caught on the curly tail but seem to catch just as many on the road runner. Percentages on each seem to change every day. On some days more hit the back one, other days most hit the front Roadrunner. Just kinda depends on their aggressiveness levels.
