Hey gents. Xmas is right around the corner and end of year clearance items are starting to appear. March is still awhile away but if i can get stuff 75% off then shoot. Was hoping yall could help me out with some tried and true colors that always seems to produce for ya..... and special color combos, jig types, hook sizes, things of the sort. Thanks guys

Where are you going to fish Dave?? Orange or Char/Orange combo seems to be good on the big four
95% of the time I'm using jigs I'm longlining. I use curly tail grubs most of the time and will always have some dark green and dark blue on my jigs and roadrunners. I also use much larger grubs than most folks. I'll run 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inch baits. We have a growing Asian carp problem and we are starting to see some crappie we clean have 4-5" carp minnows in them. In my twisted way of thinking, why do I want to run a bait that is 1 1/2" long when the crappie are keying on a much larger meal?
If I could only use one color day in and day out for the rest of my life it would be black/chartreuse. It is my confidence bait color hands down.

Thanks for the quick response. We will be on Washington the 3rd week of March. I was hoping to troll some jigs around the outskirts of the trees for some big females but who knows what they will be doing when I get there.... my luck they will be pushed far back in the trees
Pink, orange, and Chartruse heads, in 1/16 or 1/8 oz #1 or 1/0 hooks. Black and Chartruse, orange and Chartruse, purple and Chartruse, and my go to is a lime and Chartruse.
Chartreuse chartreuse and more chartreuse. I don't know why but I always have something hit as long as there is chartreuse in it. Lately. Chartreuse glitter and green with chartreuse glitter tails.

Pink head/ blue white jig
Thanks for the color recommendations! We use alot of red chartreuse/ black chartreuse up here. Jig head color never seemed to matter though. However almost all the videos I've watched has pink head and chartreuse grubs... strike king grubs that is. Somthing special about strike king that i don't know about or is everyone pushing their sponsors? I know every lake fishes a little bit different and everone has their favorite brand. Lake of the Ozarks is really big with Slab Buster's like reelfoot is to grizzly jigs. Mississippi got a local brand that stands above the rest?
Chartreuse & pink, white, black etc. Any combo.

I have alot of different colors on hand for anything the feeshes or weather throws our way. But I have about 6 to 8 colors that are our "Go to" colors for starting just about anywhere.

Anyone ever try those "minnow teasers"? Never really seen them before but coming across alot of reports with people saying they work. Are they a seasonal thing like summer or fall/ when the hatch is a little bigger?
Use em whenever the fish want em, few weeks back at Washington if it didn't have some color tipped with a minner it didn't get bit! Arky Jigs, Crappielogic or Meatgetter all offer them in a wide assortment of colors.
We'll I'll keep an eye out for some. Seems like this time of year alot of the local bait shops are just giving there products away. Usually it's junk but the saying goes.... ones man's trash is another man's treasure

I have been having a lot of success on the "spear tail" style baits like the Slab Slanger or Slab Slay'r and I fish a lot of tubes too but I don't get too hung up on brand names as much as do on the specific bait colors. For me, I want nice opaque colors especially chartreuse for fishing the muddy waters down here. Like the Southern Pro Glow Charteuse color Versus, say, the Arkie glitter chartreuse.
The way I see it after studying some recent research on a crappies eye, in muddy water especially deeper than five or more feet, the fish can't hardly see more than a couple of feet at best. But, the fish can see a shadow or silhouette passing over them for quite a ways, and crappie as we know feed up more than not anyways. So I want a nice deep color and fat bait to create as nice and defined a silhouette as possible. Now I'm not saying color doesn't matter when they get close, but I feel I can attract one from farther away this way.

I'm sure they serve a purpose. The only time I go to baits smaller than 1.75 is in the dead of winter when the water is clearer especially when there is a shad kill and maybe after the shad spawn and the lake is full of small bait. But that's only when they dont seem to want my 2"-3". Except for crawfish jigs, I have one 1.5" that I use a lot in the winter when the fish are hugging the bottom

I used to guide offshore big game charters and I guess I carried a lot of that logic over to crappie fishing. When in deep water offshore you are trying to attract fish that are 30, 40, sometimes 100' beneath with you. There are times when color makes a big difference in getting a bite. But usually that means you aren't fishing active fish and you're finessing them to bite. A lot of the time an actively feeding fish with eat anything that comes within its visual range. I like presentations that will attract fish from as far away as possible so I gravitate to bigger lures and solid, opaque colors for dirty turbid waters.

ANY bait the Bobby Garland puts out is good...like the rest...good for certain times, certain conditions..I tend to fish bigger baits..sometimes smaller baits work better...I usually don't change to them soon enough, if at all
I agree 95 percent of my baits are bobby garland and I am very pleased. I don't care for there jig heads tho, there is a small bait store called the tackle box in mccomb ms that has some real nice jig heads. They are a homemade pore with sicle hooks any size you want, he told me a guy out of new Orleans makes then don't no if that's true or not.Quote:
