I did the same with my '96 482. I had access to 1" x 2" oak slats. I placed them on edge and glued/screwed them together. I also screwed a couple of pretty rigid metal straps to the bottom to reinforce the gluing and screwing together. (The 2" was a little too tall, so I did have to rip them on the table saw. Hard on blades. lol.) The cut to size was a trial and error thing. I laid the slabs over the area to be filled and marked them a little proud and then gradually removed material with circular saw. I had to cut it small enough to fit the hole after I glued the carpet on, but not so small that it wouldn't catch the narrow ledges on the sides. To keep it in place, I took some plumber strap and and attached it to the bottom of the slab and bent it so that it would fit up and over the lip on the front storage box. If this is clear as mud, I can get off my butt and pull it out to take some pictures for you.
