I wouldn't do that until I am about to tie it. I paint most jig heads, but some jigs use and I painted head so I coat them with Sally's to keep it from oxidizing. However there is stuff you can mix in your lead for pouring that helps it stay bright longer!

Yes clear coat your heads to stop air from getting to it and you'll be fine. Clear nail polish and clear powder paint will both work.
Would prefer the clear powder paint - except for the 2 spinnerbaits bottom left and the 2 bags of lure spinner bodes, I traded for those - the rest I poured close to a year ago and their still shiny

I use a mix of 2 parts tire weight and 1 part pure and after their all trimmed up they go in 4 mil zip bags.
If you're planning on using any type of plastics on a jig head that has Sallys on it forget it the sallys will melt the plastic and you'll have a heck of a mess.
Also keeping them in bags like Fatman showed will keep them pretty shiny for a good while. Air is the culprit!
Like Fatman, I use a mixture. I run 2lbs of wheel weight for 10 lbs of pure (give or take). You can always powder paint a clear coat if you wanted to but I have not had the need when mixing.
Sally's = Sally Henson's Hard as Nail. Most everyone uses it for something! Got that tip years ago from a fly fishing/tying web site. Works well enough and no need to cure like the clear powder paint. It's fast and dries fast as well. All we are trying to do is keep it from oxidizing while in your box waiting to bee used.

Sally Hanson's, clear powder paint, or silver powder paint will all do the job. Sally's will chip when fished, powder paint when cures properly will outlast the lure.
There is a certain type of metal you can add to your lead that will keep them as shiney as a mirror...but it slips my mind at this time....lol...
As already mentioned mixing hard lead with the soft lead works. (wheel weights are hard lead)
can get old lead looking like new with acetone.the basic ingredient in nail polish remover.cheap nail polish works as well as anything.i use clear with glitter on the ones i dont paint.powder is a SUPERIOR finish for sure and the hooks will rust away long before the finish does
True, but most of mine ar on jigs that guys want unpainted and the Sally's is just to keep them from oxidizing in the box before every used. Sometimes a plain lead head will out fish a painted head. Just saying!Quote:
