The invisible lure always works on crappie. LOL.

The Thang was a fly inline spinner combo that was lethal on bream.
yep that's it inline spinner with a small cricket or waterbug on the end. bream and small bass would tear it up
seams like i had one will look in my old tackle and see if i can find it . if i do i will take a picture of it and post .
IIRC , the "Thing" was an inline wire shaft spinner with a lead keel just behind the blade with a rubber legged spider on the bottom .. Gillchaser
I think I have one in my fly box. I can't remember the manufacturer. We used to exchange the bug with a hook and cricket. You could drift the river and kill the bream.
didn`t find the thing but found 2 meps with buck tail . i know i did have one some where will keep looking
I remember that lure no one seem to know what I was talking about. It had a white looking spider on it and we caught all kind of fish with it.
The fly inline spinner type lures are great lures. I have caught all kinds of fish with them. They are just like the Johnson Beetle Spins they catch everything and work all the time. Inline spinners and Beetle Spins are great crappie lures and not many fishermen use them for crappie. If you find some of "The Thing" lures let us know how you do with them.
Will do
i know what you are talking about i had one or maybe more but can`t locate them
may be at the lake in a old tackle box i took to the camper and put it in a storage building over there .
If you find it post a picture may be able to make it.
We used to slay the white bass on Lanier with 'em way back when Lanier had a white bass run....Last one's I saw were in the hardware store in Sparta about 20 years ago...Went back 2 weeks later to buy the all, the whole card was gone and can't even find a picture of one on the 'net....
My favorite trolling lure ever. Was an inline spinner with a lead keel on a wire frame. Came with a foam spider with rubber legs. No lure before or since caught more on Lake Talquin. Spiders came white, black, yellow and maybe green. White out caught black 3 or 4 to one. Other colors were not in the game. All of a sudden they disappeared in the 70's. Found an old one in a bait shop in around '77 and it was sold by Columbia or Colombia Bait Co. in Columbia, Alabama. Small town in south Alabama on the Georgia line. I ordered a couple of card full for me and my dad. Tried later with no luck. I still look in the dark holes when I go in an old bait store or hardware store. No luck. Lord, I wish they were made again.
I made request in the Alabama forum for help with the company and lure. Doggonit you got my "wants" kicked up by mentioning this lure!
This lure is easy to make, when they first came out they were $1.95 which was expensive for a one striper GI making 33.00 every 2 weeks .
My father in law and I came up with a way to make them fairly cheap back then. You take a Hildebrandt #1 inline spinner put the fly of your choice on it add 2 split shot to your line about 10 inches from the lure and it works like a charm. You can find the spinners on ebay just search for Hildebrandt #1 single blade spinner , some have 3 in a pack some have 2. You can get the fly just about any place.
found the thing fly i have 3 of them made by the Columbia company in Columbia Alabama Columbia fishing tackle

That's awesome would love to find one.
Did anyone find any forsale
I know this is an old post but I have cases of these lures still in the package. My grandfather bought out the intire inventory when they shut down in Columbia Alabama.
If anyone is interested in buying some I have the white and yellow ones that I can get to quick. I have only been through 1 case of the stuff since he passed away and still have about 800 more to go.
What is the body made of? Also how old are these?
Also sent you a PM.

I remember using that THING on the Chattahoochee River north of Atlanta as far back as 1966. It was murder on the Brim and Shellcrackers up there. This was when the only launch ramp was at the old Rainbow Sand Company on Azalea Dr. and there none of those fancy homes up there. No complicated procedure, just move along and cast at the banks...the fish did the rest.
It was a KILLER of a lure
