Crappie Jinks I suggest going with 2 different guys that have Lowrance and Hummingbird then which ever one you liek the best go with it. EB

Garmin! Especially for the price. Clearest picture out there. Fished on several different boats, even some pro bass fishermen, and have noticed lowrance, humminbird, raymarine dont hold a stick

The most important thing is spend the time to learn what the unit is telling you whether it be a bird or Lowrance, I've fished behind both and both do well, But like EB said, best to hop in the boat with one of us who already have some hrs logged in and would be able to give you advice you can use. I will say after going to the Gen 2 Touch on my units its much more user friendly. Personally I only use the scanning mode due to no comparison to detail that it gives versus sonar. I love watching peoples face when I say we should be getting bit and then THUMP!!!!
I have a hd8 and will probably get the helix 9 instead of the 1199 for the bowl of my boat. Anyways thanks the feedback is valuable to me.
Learn to read whatever you have without setting it on fish id and you can get the results that you are looking for. I have owned every make mentioned so far on this thread and have had useful results from each. The real key in my opinion is to never use the fish id function on any unit, instead learn to interpret the info given on the screen. You can play with the color pallet to make them more readable.
