humminbird 1199 or hds 8 gen 2
thanks
1199!, I am biased though and will admit it!
Can of worms.
:hesaid
Hds 8?
Roy, you might get more input if you post this in the Electronics and Photography section. There is lots of good info in that section.
Crappie Jinks I suggest going with 2 different guys that have Lowrance and Hummingbird then which ever one you liek the best go with it. EB
Like EB said. I'm very biased and run HDS units. It doesn't matter which you choose as long as you learn it from the inside out. Your electronics is only as good as you are. Good Luck.......Ranger

Garmin! Especially for the price. Clearest picture out there. Fished on several different boats, even some pro bass fishermen, and have noticed lowrance, humminbird, raymarine dont hold a stick
If you can might be worth your while to wait until next year for the generation 2 Helix's. Redge you might be interested in this.

Redge, just like we talked today. Cant keep up with the new stuff just like cell phones. Every month there is something better then the month before.
Thanks for the feedback.
The most important thing is spend the time to learn what the unit is telling you whether it be a bird or Lowrance, I've fished behind both and both do well, But like EB said, best to hop in the boat with one of us who already have some hrs logged in and would be able to give you advice you can use. I will say after going to the Gen 2 Touch on my units its much more user friendly. Personally I only use the scanning mode due to no comparison to detail that it gives versus sonar. I love watching peoples face when I say we should be getting bit and then THUMP!!!!
I have a hd8 and will probably get the helix 9 instead of the 1199 for the bowl of my boat. Anyways thanks the feedback is valuable to me.
Learn to read whatever you have without setting it on fish id and you can get the results that you are looking for. I have owned every make mentioned so far on this thread and have had useful results from each. The real key in my opinion is to never use the fish id function on any unit, instead learn to interpret the info given on the screen. You can play with the color pallet to make them more readable. This advice comes with a double your money back guarantee and is worth every penny you paid for it. :)
You could physically pass a 2 X 4 under the transducer and it will usually show it as a fish if the unit is not equipped with down scan. That has been my experience any way. By using the fish ID I am referring to setting the unit up to show fish symbols instead of archs when something crosses paths with the transducer.
