I am going to visit some friends in Trussville in two weeks and would like to take the boat to do a little crappie fishing while I'm there. Anything within an hour to try out ? I think I read lake Purdy was close with good crappie fishing.

Good crappie in Lake Purdy. Lake is really down right now and only 30-35% full. The fish could be concentrated.
Just an FYI, Lake Purdy does not allow private boats (Lake Purdy). They have rentals and as H.M. Slab says, they could be concentrated. From Trussville, Logan Martin is 45 minutes away and is a good crappie lake. Neely Henry would be about 1.5 hours and Weiss 2 hours. Keep in mind that bad drought plus winter draw down has the Coosa River system down. It would be advisable to have decent electronics on your rig.
Neely henry is down 1 1/2 foot.
Like everyone said Logan Martin is close but Neely Henry has been better this fall.

I work with the state and know a bit about this situation (Drought) that you are speaking of.
It is true what they say about Drought and fish being concentrated at this time. Try the deep parts of the lake, and seek structures 20'-30' ft down.
This Drought will stay in effect until we get about 15 hours of constant rain. It's been over 40 days in most counties since rain.
Note, if you do go out to Purdy, go about 2 miles out to the right and try the Solar Bees.
It looks like I will try Logan Martin since I don't have a lot of time and will launch at riverside I believe is the name. Any creeks or coves near by or should I fish in the main lake?
Good luck to ya up there in crappie country.
If launching at Riverside you should fish the river channels. There are a lot of places around there with cover along the channels. I fish a lot at the mouth of Choccolocco Creek which is about 5 miles down river from Riverside. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
Lay Lake is good. I could show you a few spots :)
Went Saturday morning with no luck. Fished the river edges south of riverside and around a couple of the bridges but the wind was pretty rough. I'm going to try to come back in late march or April to visit for a week and try it again. Beautiful place to fish but I fish the river delta and lake stuff is a lot different. Thanks for the advice guys.
I hate to hear of the dismal results. The wind has been tough to deal with lately. Was reading reports from a local crappie guide that is a fish whisperer and he is reporting that the fishing is very poor at Logan Martin. Going to take my Dad Thursday and shoot some docks but not very optimistic. Come back in the Spring and long line troll in the coves and flats, I believe you will have better results.
