Anybody ever catch any crappie below or around the dam in a boat? Was out there a week ago and there are some pretty good humps a few hundred yards down from the ramps. Lord knows the spots and white bass were there :scratchhead

Caught a few there. Off the rocks, upstream of the boat ramp on the New Hope side. Friend of mine caught some in the area between the locks, but it was nighttime. A little early for them right now, I think. I caught mine in the spring.
I have heard that there are a couple humps and holes in front of the spill gates which hold them, although I don't know first hand. I only fish for catfish and white bass below the dam.
I grew up fishing below the dam with my dad but we didn't have a boat and only bank fished. We caught lots of fish from the bank but it was rare to catch a crappie. Good luck and give us a report on how it goes.
I haven't crappie fished below Guntersville but one day I caught some in a throw net while cat fishing. So they are there.

Winter and spring is great down there on those humps and pockets. Catch a lot of nice crappie on the Arab side from the bank. That whole side along the rip rap holds fish when that bait gets up there and moves up and down the bank. Stripes and spots will keep you busy.
Weather permitting, I'm gonna try it out Sunday. Try being the key word, because I'm the worst crappie fisherman in N. Alabama :fish
Welcome to c.c. At least u going to try ! Hang in their keep following tips and reports that are posted on c.c
lots of very useful stuff and lots of great people that are willing to help you learn.
This time of year I do pretty good from the later night or early morning throwing a 1/33 jig. If your in a boat I would fish up and down the wall on the Huntsville side.
Good luck and report back how it goes. I may go there Sunday as well but in search of some channel cats :)
Well, I went today and it was a ROUGH and I mean ROUGH son of a gun below the dam. You coulda sunk a boat out there easy today. I ran down to both Paint Rock and Flint for a little while and then came back to the dam and braved the rough water for some catfish. Ended up with about 10 good eating size channels.
I guess the high winds pushing towards the discharge of all the turbines made is so bad. You woulda just had to have seen it. It was rough.
I believe you. Sometimes the wind funnels in there just right and it can kind of create a resonance with the waves created by the turbines and amplify them significantly. I bet there were still a few guys not wearing life jackets right below the dam though. Never fails.
Good comment scout-j-m regarding life jackets. I was a scout swimmer in the Army for a while and know a bit about the water. I see folks that should be wearing pfd's constantly. I always wear mine...regardless of experience.
A general rule below Guntersville dam is if the wind is out of the north northwest, it will be very rough as the wind is going against the current. The waves will bigger based on the faster the current is running and how hard the wind is blowing. When there are gates open and a 20mph plus north wind is going against that current there will be 3 to 5 footers depending on the gusts .The harder the wind blows the high up or closer to the dam the rough stuff will be but somewhere there will be a distance where the current is faster than the wind power and it levels off. Given that they are only running at mid idle right now due to the drought (12000-15000 cfs) the wind will be pushing the waves up very to close to the dam I suspect. If you can get launched on the Turbine side or Arab Side you can usually go up in the swift water generated by the turbines then cut across to the lock walls and can find shelter inside them and catch a few fish. Going down stream is risky business with a high north wind. One other thing it is a requirement by la to WEAR your life preserver if you are 800 yards or closer to the Dam. The man will give you the blue light special if caught with out one on!!
