Just trying to figure out how to get my baits to run at the depth I want.

Pythagorean Theorem

That was helpful. Googling now...:)
Run in shallow water until you see them drag. Precision trolling app is good also.
Anyone with practical experience and willing to share is most welcome here
John Doe Slab has implemented a way to search for info on the Main Crappie Forum 9-18 2016. A way to find it right now is go to the 2nd page a see the header Testing a new Crappie.com search tool. Click on it highlight the (Here it is http) put your search in the box Crankbait charts and this will pull up post on this subject. Hope this helps you.
You don't have to do that, now .... just put your search words in the blank space above the words Advanced Search and hit Enter Key. THAT IS the new search feature !!
Here's one thread discussing pushing cranks / line angle / line length equations :http://www.crappie.com/crappie/missi...5=#post3274817
Some charts use the Pythagorean Theorem ... line at 45 deg angle means length of line out times 0.6 will give you the approx. depth of your weight/crank. But, if you're not using weight, you're not likely running the lines at a 45deg angle. Length of line above water (from tip to surface) isn't counted in length of line out.
FWIW -
Around here we use 2oz weights + 300 Bandits @ 1.8mph with 55ft of line out at ~25deg angle, to get the crank down to around ~15ft. Main line is 30lb test braid (10lb test mono diameter equivalent) and crank is on a 5' leader of 6lb test mono.
Mr. Crappiepappy, I figured there was a better way and now I thank you for teaching me something. I do know that this is 1 of the many things I like about crappie.com. The people here are always trying to help others in their quest for knowledge. I'm glad to be a part of such an organization.

Take the time to read through this. You will find everything you need to know about pulling cranks.
Double post. Stupid device thinks it smarter than me ..wait.. maybe it is.
That is a great thread. Will take me a while to absorb all that. Thanks Cray
just cast your bait out a good distance....run from deep water....now you should hold your rod for this....then troll from way deep to gradually shallower water and watch the depth on the ff.....when ya feel the bottom with ur crank...you know bout how deep its running with ur line and speed...then you can let more line out or add weight or go faster to get deeper....but remember...in the words of the "G"....most people fish too deep for sacs....so start shallow and go deeper and let them tell ya where and what color....and this advice comes from cdc also...and more advice which comes from the thread you are currently reading(maybe)...a busy troller is a productive troller.....
A lot of very good advise in this post. I suggest for you to utilize all these options. write the formula down and place it in the boat in case line counters go out or you have rods without line counters. You can use the charts located here on this site for bandits and arkies. Also consider using depth hunter braid due to the fact it is marked with different colors for counting out length of line. If you have a touch of ocd, like me, i use line counter reels plus depth hunter braid while using the charts.
Finally all of the charts in the world are not exact for your boat and rod setup. they will get you very close. When you get your set up find a gentle sloping point going into deep water prefer one without cover or snags. Troll across it at a marked length at a selected depth, i.e. 15 feet. Watch your depth finder and see if the target depth is when the lures actually are making contact with the bottom. You may find that for your rig you might have to run a foot deeper or shallower than what the depth chart states. You will find different manufactures lures will run different. Also the different models of the same manufacturer will run different than the charts. Watch your turns. When you are turning one side will run deeper than the other. If you are picking up fish in turns only on one side then you need to adjust your set up to deeper or shallower.
Final thoughts. Rig and go fish. Time on the water will give you the experience you need. Also, you need to add the length of line out of the water to the charts stated length. The charts measurement start at the water line to the lure. If your set up has your rod tips high with a lot of line out of the water your lure will not be running the depth you think it is if you don't.
good luck and enjoy.
how do you guys have them rigged with 2 Oz of weight? just a slip sinker down to a swivel then a lead back to your crank?
Trolling weights...have swivel made in them....tie main line to it and then a three ft. leader from other end to crankbait.......this is for pushing.....for pulling you do not need a weight. Attachment 248878 Pushing depth chart

Appreciate all the help for the rookie. A bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work, but we all still want to be successful. Especially my fishing partners - (wife primarily and my son).
A good place to buy good line counter reels cheap https://northwoodsoutlet.com/product...trolling-reel/
Lots of info on pulling crankbaits here http://www.crappie.com/crappie/missi...-cranks-101-a/
Justin .... some do use "trolling weights" and some of those have swivels built-in. Others do use barrel or other slip type sinkers, and do have a swivel or clip on the end of the main line to attach your leader.
Some of our members make "trolling weights w/swivel" ... & some of my crankin buddies have purchased trolling weights (torpedo shape with ring eye on each end) from Crawdads ( Trolling Sinker Weights )
Now that you've heard all the technical side of things, I'll pipe up from the cheap seats. Over time, and especially with this, time on the water is the best teacher, you'll find some things will stick out to you. If you know your waters and you troll, set up 2 or 3 rods with the same bait, be it jig or crank or minnow. First rod is a short cast, second is a long cast, and the third is in between. On days when they're finicky , one of these rods will get more than the others. With a sharpie, mark the line at the reel. let the short line out and bring the long line in to be very close to the marked line and run those for a while. Then the colors will show which suits their mood for the day. Sometimes the clown colors are hot, others the natural presentations will shine above the others. Pay attention to the cloud cover and which colors are doing best.
The electronics make this so much simpler. I left mine home one day and still had a super day. They don't have to be in the boat. The sharpie mark will rub off so be sure to keep it fresh. The weight on the line makes the lines shorter and turning around much simpler and faster. Summer of '15 a friend and I were pushing 4 and pulling 4 or 6 and busy. One day the pushers would do all the work and the next day not a thing. As you have already seen from the many responses so far, there is a bunch of info on this, and it can be as simple or detailed as you care to make it. Somewhere along the way you'll find the way that you like best. In the end, I ran 6 rods of various length and my most important tool was the tracking feature on my GPS. As the sun rose they sometimes moved into deeper water and the game continued. The GPS helped me to track parallel and a bit deeper of my former track.
Good luck on working this all out, the learning process is fun and you'll be in good company. Keep us posted and show some pics now and then. If I haven't already said it, Welcome from Central Florida.
Wow, three pages and no one mentioned the easiest method of all??? Mark Rominack from Michigan has helped to create what was known as the trollers bible. Originally it was in book format called Precision trolling. You can still get the stick on cards but now you download the FREE precision trolling ap. You can purchase the dive chart for each bait for 1.99 or the whole set for less than 100 bucks. Has about every crank known to man.
Yoy can tell it how many feet down you want to run with braid or mono and it will tell you how many feet back. Or, if you are catching fish at 20 back, you can plug that in and it gives the depth. Most important thing with this system is to have properly calibrated reels. I troll most of the time and would't think of doing it any other way.
This isn't guess work. No math and probabilities that a bait "should" run a certain depth basedon line angle. It is tested with divers in the water visually watching and measuring dive deprh based on line out vs speed of the boat. Hundreds of thousands of hours in the water testing.
Dear John,
What you should have learned by now is that my original answer is fact.:yikes
