Fighting the urge to trade trucks

Got a 2004 f150 s'crew with 105,000 miles. Never a problem but worry about future problems. Hate breakdowns on the highway. Hate to start out on a series of payments since I have gotten used to not having one. If I trade it in it won't bring near what it would be worth to me. I am not a very good salesman so I don't want to sell it myself. Not gonna be much difference between the two trucks. Fighting the urge but I am weak. On a side note I took my company truck in. When I got it back the mechanic told me he couldn't fix my brakes so he just made my horn louder!!

drive it until the wheels come off and then if you can put them back on drive it some more. No way im I in any kinda of a hurry to give the car dealers my money. 105000 miles aint nothing

I had that urge a couple months ago. I even had the dealer order it. They kept telling me when it would be here and 2 weeks later and no truck I talked myself out of it. About a week later it came in. They called me and said it was here and I told them to sell it to somebody else. Don't regret it as about a week later I had a senior moment and backed into the gate and scratched it pretty good. I would have really been mad if that was my new truck

I am fighting the urge to up grade from 1/2 to 3/4 diesel. I have around 150000, I really like my truck. I think my camper is just a little too much for it. Plus, I have spent around $3000 in the past couple of months. DP

I hear the new Fords have aluminum bodies now. Wonder how the DC power from the batteries are going to work as I was always told to never ground a aluminum boat from battery. So how are they grounding these new Ford trucks. Also was told that the aluminum was not going to hold up to much abuse like steel body ones. Well with the prices so high I don't have any problem with wanting to purchase a new truck.

On today's vehicals with routine maintaince 105000 is no miles to speak of. Do some minor maintaince and keep driving that sucker. Put that payment in a special savings act every month until you have to buy another one. Find a good low mileage used one and pay cash for it. D****M a bunch of payments and interest. I'm like Scrat, at today's prices I wouldn't buy a new one if I had G's money.

I am struggling with the same issue, but my 2002 SUV has just under 200K on it. I about decided to keep its til it dies. I've only replaced the power steering pump so it has been extremely reliable.
Was thinking I could get more out of it if I traded before it dies, but the age and mileage make it not worth much running or not.
Plus one of my buds has a 2004 Tahoe with 295K on it and he drives it every day.

Fighting the same battle here. Just holding off until the repairs start piling on..Hopefully I can push it off close to a year. That said I dont think the market has stabilized enough around here for the dealerships to really know what to bring in stock. Still see brand new 2015 models on lots and piles of 2016 and the 2017 starting to show up. If I had to buy tomorrow I would likely go and work hard on one of the new stock 2015's.

Go for it. You won't regret going to a 3/4 ton diesel. I went from a 2013 F150 5.0 Crewcab to a 2012 F250 6.7 diesel Crewcab and haven't looked back. The F250 is a pulling beast.

I am assuming you have the 5.4 or the 4.6 Liter in that truck. I had a 1999 Ford F150 with the 4.6 and I put 379,000 miles on it. The truck was all original except for rear end which was replaced at about 170,000 due to a gear failure (can't recall which one but it was cheaper to replace entire rear end). Both of those Ford engines are great as long as they are taken care of. Just my experience.

I bought a 2013 F-150 4wd supercrew last year, and hadn't regretted it yet. These new trucks are now built to roll up the mileage if taken care of.
We will be keeping her until the doors, wheels and bed falls off!

I saw one of those new f150 after a wreck and it peeled back the whole right side of the body back like a coke can.

You're not supposed to wreck them. The good old days of thick steel vehicles is gone. Used to be, if there was a bad wreck you just hosed the blood and guts out and the car was ready for the next driver. Now they are designed to crumple, tear and fly apart. This absorbs the energy, thus giving the occupant a better chance of survival.

First of all on the company truck get an anchor mate so you can deploy some chains to drag and throw a couple of drift socks out the window when you want to slow down then drop a Grapnel anchor for a complete stop. The purchase, well I've got over 230k om my 2005 GMC and I ain't thinkin' about a new one yet. Roadside assistance might be something to think about though.

If you can't resist the urge for a new one .do a friend a favor and find out what the dealer
is willing to give you on the trade in and sell it to someone for what their going to give you and make
someone very happy.and if you don't have a friend that's in the market for it . Well I'll be your friend

Even if you put 5-7 grand into your truck and made it new again you would still be ahead of the 20 thousand plus interest you would be paying for the next 3 to 4 years.

Keep it. Good for 250,000 miles with a little tlc

If the urge overcomes you put your old truck on craig's list. Set your price at a reasonable amount, no need to be a salesman, it will sell. No matter what they tell you, a dealer is not going to give you more than wholesale on an old truck.

Plenty of us old fisherman looking for older truck to buy,,sell it at your wanting price and ask what it's worth to you,,,,people will pay if it's in decent condition,,,new truck is way too much for most today,,,

Exactly. Well maintained older trucks are incredibly desirable In today's market. We never trade vehicles. Sell it yourself and go from there. Lots of people want a truck around that wouldn't put many miles per year on. Hunting, fishing etc. etc.

I drove my 2003 F150 to 225,000 miles and the guy that bought it now has 310,000 on it. My "new" one now has 170,000 and I will drive it at least another 50,000. At 105,000, that truck is just now broke in!!
If you can't resist, Ford is offering 0% financing...

I agree. Don't get ripped by trading it in. You can sell it yourself and get a lot more money for it. One disadvantage of selling it yourself is the taxes you save by trading. You only pay taxes on the difference in money by trading it in, but you'll still do better to sell it if you get enough more money for it. Very desirable vehicle with only 105k on it.

2003, Yukon with 218,300. Just put new breaks on her and, as far as I now, she's ready for another 200,000. She's old enough that I don't mind runnin into the fields where I hunt, and I sure don't mind using her hard. Religious on fluid maintenance and tire rotation, etc., and plenty happy with the ole girl. NOW....just as I say this, she'll prob lay down and die on me. lol I could spend $3000. on new tranny or engine and still be MANY dollars ahead. Plus the memories.....ahhh, the memories!! So, no, I'd hang on to your old truck and get out of it what it has left, before committing to a HUGE amount just to up grade 4-5 years. Right now ya know what ya got. Another used vehicle and you're dealin with somebody else's issues....way I look at it. Can yawl tell I'm bored????

My old '86 Dodge Power Ram is tough from the word go. Multiple miles on it. Drive it around town on occasion. Would I make long road trips with it? No. Just because, and will keep it because I want to. I sell my everyday truck before it hits 100,000 miles on it, and get me a new one. Value drops tremendously after 100,000 miles. I like the peace of mind when on the road. And, it works.

Then again, I do not make payments on anything.

I buy a new truck every 175k-200k miles. I don't trade. Old truck becomes farm/field truck. New truck becomes daily driver.

You can't take it with you, and with today's crazy low interest rates (yes, 0% is available from time to time) it almost makes better sense to use the money than let it sit in a savings account/CD. The utility (usefulness/pleasure/peace of mind) you get out of using the money (buying a new truck) has a value in and of itself.

Course, that's just my :twocents
