My yellow birds are made of some sort of foam material with no flags and a large wire out-riggers sort of deal. I personally don't like them but bought them to compare to others.. My Optis are plastic with flag kits. They work great and hold up well to the abuse I put them thru.
Yellow birds are newly redesigned.
Hey "MrDux", those yellow birds are some of the first generation planers made by Bob Shirley back in the 90's.
The newer ones are now being made by another company who bought the company from Bob as I understand it.
If they are like mine, they work just fine for walleye and salmon, but not as good as my Offshores and Church boards.
Tight Lines - Dave
Gomer, get the Opti mini. Just the right size for crappie and a lot less strain on your tackle.
Got some. Hate that they don't float. Also I fear that my 8 pound braid will pass through the ball bearing on the rear. I want to set mine up so the line releases from the front clip and goes down the line to the bead and swivel so I don't heve to mess with taking the planer off. If the line comes through the rear setup it will sink.
Can you show us a picture of this ball bearing your talking about. There has to be a way to rig it where it can't do that. I have one of the little off shore boards and it will pull cranks just fine. My problem is getting braid to stay in the clip until you want it to release.

The slit in aft portion has a couple of ball bearing to hold line. 30 pound braid comes through easier than I would expect. Perhaps some 10 pound mono might work. Like the security of the braid.

Look like twins.
Gomer, think I would find me a screw eye like on those 2 bottom ones. Drill a tiny pilot hole, put a dab of JB weld on the threads and screw it in, then a dab on the ring where it come together to fill that little gap your braid might pull through, then just thread your lie through it or attach a snap swivel with a split ring to it. That should let it turn around and slide down the line to your bead. That is how my Offshore is set up.
Take a big snap swivel and snap it in where the ball bearing is. The ball bearing will hold the swivel and the planer will slip down your line to a big barrel swivel with a bead in front of it. You can also put a SS keychain thing where the ball bearing is and attach a big snap swivel to that.
Swivel idea is a good one. Makes you wonder why they used the bearings in the first place. Guess some folks use heavier line.
well, the yellow birds are about an inch or 2 shorter than optis. no hole for light stick. otherwise the same. still ok for 19 bucks.
Gomer, check these out. I have 2 set's of these in the 4 inch. They make a set in 6 inch. They are made to release and slide down the line. Little tricky at first but I like them. They don't plain out as far as the large boards but will get bait away from boat. They will pull cranks and I like them for pulling jigs at slower speed. They will sink with a heavy weight but when moving forward they will carry a 2 oz weight.
