Oh, oh!!!

Finally had a day that gave us a break from the rain this AM so we hooked up and headed out. Launched and started down the canal and a low voltage warning popped up on my GPS. As I got on step it starting reading 12.3 volts, so all is good. A mile down the canal we turned into the Intercoastal Canal and shortly after that I hear a strange noise coming from the engine, kind of a rattle like something was loose. I shut down and pulled the cover and didn't find anything wrong. Decided to come in, but the boat wouldn't get on step as it was running on only 2 cylinders. So we idled in and picked up. I have an appointment at the boat doctor shortly to see what we can find. I sure hope and pray it's not a cylinder that went down. That would hurt real bad. I post the outcome later.

Got my fingers crossed for ya......maybe its just a coil pac went out on one cyl

I'm bracing for the worst and praying for the best. It will probably be Monday before I know for sure.

Boy howdy, Mr. Gene, that is a rough way to start a day on the water. I'll be praying for the best and hope it works out for you so there is very little down time and even less expense.

UH OH.....I got the bug also.....wanted to go out today but the trim switch on my motor conked out....going in the shop Monday morning....

I'm sure you looked at this pawpaw but did you check the cover on the spark plugs to make sure they were snapped into place? If they aren't snapped all the way on, it will cause your boat to do that. OR it could be the carbs, had that on mine last year and it wouldn't get on step OR it could be your high pressure jets. Oh well enough rambling, just GET IT FIXED BEFORE DARBONNE!!! LOL

Any word yet PPG.....turns out I need to replace the trim switch on my motor.....got it ordered today....$84.....takes about a week to get in....

Not yet Bruce. I stopped in today to see what was going on and he told me he fell behind schedule because of another project he was working on had some unexpected problems. So I told him as soon as he got the compression test ran to give me a call. That will determine what I do next. If it is a cylinder problem I may repower with a 70 if I can find one. There is a shop not far from here that specializes in rebuilding engines and trading them for engines needing repair. I hope his prices are reasonable. Good luck with yours

Well I got the results back and it ain't good. Middle piston bad. Looking at options. This mechanic said he could have the one cylinder fixed without touching the other two for 2K. I don't think so, never heard of doing only one cylinder although he says it common on my type of motor. Waiting on a call from someone who has a 60 4 stroke yammy, hope he calls soon. Is 1700 hours a lot of hours on the 4 strokes. I have no idea.

Yikes.....sorry man.....hope you find something soon.......1700 hours...lets see, if you run about 3 hours each fishing trip, that would be about 567 trips.....and if you go twice a week that would be 283 weeks divided by 52 weeks in a year comes to 5.45 years...that's 3 hours twice a week for 5.45 years.....seems like a lot to me....but I am no mechanic....good luck with your find....I will keep my eye open for you....

Sorry about the engine. That quote sounds high for changing just one piston.

Yep....and you dont know for sure its a piston until you pull the head....could be a valve....could be a blown head gasket.

Naw, it a busted piston and ring with a lightly scored cylinder. I hoping the funds show up for a new one. If not, I'll probably fix it myself, it wouldn't be the first time.

That does sound like a lot of hours on a motor. Looking at used Tractors at auction --- 35 to 40 year old tractors do not have that many hours. then you come across one 10 years old with more --- did he cut grass for the Highway Dept.

Good news, I think. Found a shop that specializes in rebuilding engines. He will sent the block out to a shop that specializes in boring and honing blocks. He will then rebuild mine using new pistons, rings, and bearings. He will even take the foot down and check and change the seals and put in a new water pump. He will do everything to insure that the engine will be in a like new condition because he will guarantee it for 90 days. The price will be 1700 to 2000 dollars. Sounds like a good deal to me. What y'all think.

Sounds good. Know anybody that has used them?

I have already pulled the trigger on it. They were recommended by a few people I know and one of our members has bought one of there rebuilt engines and has had good service from it. I went to their shop to have a face to face talk with them and seeing their shop and their answers to my question I feel that they are trustworthy and not "fly by night". He had an identical engine to mine that they took on a trade and rebuilt for sale for $4800 less my engine for trade which would come out to nearly the same price. He said he could have it on my boat in a couple of days if I was in a hurry. Since I know my engine and how it was cared for and also no salt water use I decided to wait the couple of weeks and have mine rebuilt. The wait time depends on the block shop and how much or a work load they have. Now if he would have had a 70 HP I think I would have picked it up and traded mine in. "G" mine was a 2 stroke, 2007 model. I figured the cost of the engine new plus the repair will have made the cost of operation for 9 years at around 700 dollars a year. I would have like to see it much less, but considering the amount of pleasure Linda and I have had with our boat, it's a cheap price to pay. Of course, as time go on that price will come down as we add more years to the equation. If I run it for 5 more years then the cost per year will be down to $500. Randy, not sure exactly, but as JR mentioned because of the type of damage it was probably due to fuel or oil. They will clean out the carbs and check the oiling system also.
