Ok, we have racks in the back of the pontoon to pull cranks, my wife and I both have our license, if we have a couple friends get on the boat to ride the lake while the wife drives and I reel in fish and they aren't fishing, do they have to have a fishing license?
I would say that is up to each officers discretion. If you are pulling 4,6 or 8 cranks I would not want to be the one without a license
Not worth the risk , go get one . Was told that fishing without a license in ms. buy a resident was over $ 600 dollars . They will drop fine to less than $150 if you go buy one . Out of state ? No way !
I know a man and woman that went to the lake. He was fishing and had a license she didn't and she was there to just watch and get some sun. He asked her to go get him another reel and rod out of the car. When she got back where he was the Game Warden walked up and asked for their license. Guess what she got a ticket. So if I was even getting in a boat with fishing tackle onboard or on the bank with someone else fishing I would have my license. You do know that just fishing license is not as expensive as all game and fishing license. Like Eagle 1 said it's not worth the risk.:twocents
If you are on a boat with fishing gear then it is assumed that your intension is to fish, therefore you need a license. Not any gray area here as far as the MDWFPs is concerned.
On boat, have fishing gear with no liscence. You will get a ticket. As they said not worth the risk.
for ten bucks for the day or fifteen for three days for out of state folks i would for sure get a license.
Yep, was stopped and checked many years ago while skiing. Fishing gear was found on the boat. Cost one young lady $100 for fishing without a license. It was Bill's boat so he paid it.
If you think license cost allot...probably should rethink fishing...Revenue from the sales are used to help us all.
Not worth the risk, you will feel better knowing you are legal and have a lot more fun!!

I was on Grenada this spring and got checked while coming back in at Choctaw. Warden was checking everyone, one guy a boat or two behind us decided to take the initiative and confront the warden before he got to them. His reasoning was he was the only one fishing and the gal with him didn't have a license cause she doesn't fish. The GW told him anyone on a boat fishing or with the equipment to fish on board must be licensed. The only ones not required for to have licenses are persons under 16 or above 64 or someone who is fully disabled. He asked the GW if he could buy a license from him? Warden said it was a little late for that, plus they don't sell them anymore. I would play it safe and have all aboard with a license, you wanna go to the show you gotta pay the admission :twocents

If the law was not written like that you can bet a lot of folks would have 3 or 4 "non-fishing" buddies with him on every outing. People trying to neat the system makes it hard on the honest ones.
I'm glad this came up. I have had my wife with me and she doesn't fish but likes to float around and get some sun. I would have not thought about her having a license because she doesn't fish. Now I know better.

Back in the day a kid was floating the Spring river and spotted a rod and zebco 33 on the bottom. No line on the reel. Thought he would take it home and clean it up. Possum cop wrote him a ticket for fishing without a license on a ticket that had been previously written. Held up in kangaroo court in Sharp county.

We will either leave the poles in the boathouse or have them get a license.
Had a warden check me and the wife on Sardis when I was bass fishing had 2 poles up front with me with the tackle box. Only checked for my license. Told me if a pole would have been back there within her reach he would check her license. Long as you have riders I wouldn't worry with it. Keep the business in the back of the boat and the party in the front of the boat.
Same here "hotrod1" I have never experience a problem with this in the past 40 years in Mississippi, I can't count the number of times I been fishing with my wife in the boat and a warden comes by and only ask me for my licenses. She does not fish but does enjoy riding in the boat.

One time on Greer's ferry got checked. Gave them my license. He said " funny, you don't look like a Teresa". I had her license in my wallet. Kept looking for mine and he said ok if she has herd you surely have yours. Next day I was rigging a rod with new line and they thought they had someone fishing without a license. They could see I was just putting line on a reel but were being sneaky. I reminded them they checked us the prior day and they went on their way.
It is the same in Alabama. I have some friends that have a place on Pickwick at Sunset Beach just east of the Natchez Trace bridge. I never buy an Alabama license when we go down there because they wont sell anything less than a 7 day and there is really nowhere to fish for crappie on that part of the lake/river. When I take the boat I will drive all the way to the Rose Trail that runs along Bear Creek and put in at the Colbert county ramp because that area is part of the reciprocal agreement between Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. I was told that if I went by boat from their dock to Bear Creek to fish and got stopped by the warden outside of where the reciprocal agreement ends then I could get a ticket if they found any tackle in the boat.
I had a few run-ins with those cops on Spring River back in my younger days. One time the guy had waders on and was standing in the middle of the river fishing, I don't even remember what the violation was but he saw a friend of mine do something and snatched him right out of his canoe and then pulled his badge out of his tackle fanny pack and told him he was under arrest.
Sounds like that warden was a keeper... a good snatching goes over better then a talking to anyhow... LolQuote:

When I was a kid, I got a ticket for no duck stamp for standing beside a boat ramp at McIntyre with a duck call around my neck. Warden said I was either going hunting, or coming back from hunting (He was correct, hehe). I had no gun, shells, decoys, or boat. (They had already left in another pickup). Decided to try to fight it in court (I was a teenager and still stupid). JP ruled with warden and I had to pay the ticket......... Moral is: If you are around hunting and fishing, you better have the proper paperwork or be prepared to pay later.
