Which works best regular sonar or DI when fishing brush piles & why? Anyone use SI on trolling motor?
I normally use a split screen with those two on, but it's hard to say why. With 2D it is easier (for me) to spot my jig and control the depth. DI can really show fish if you get on top of a bunch and it is pretty neat. DI gives a really good image of brush when you cross over it at a steady speed, but if you are sitting still, you may do better with 2D
I use SI all the time on the bow, the areas where I normally fish are close enough to move from spot to spot with the trolling motor. I like to cast jigs so when marking brush piles and stake beds I want to place a marker as close as possible, I've found this to be easier using SI if I'm off my waypoint by 15' it will still show.
DI (or SI) for finding the brush ...because fans beams have more coverage ...
2d for fishing the brush ...because the cone beam can keep you right on top of it ...
Rickie
Why is that rnvinc???????????
DI and SI have fan shaped thin beams ...which must be used with the boat moving to render the imaging into a discernable image ... Basically the boat must pass over (or by) the structure to make an image ...
2d has a cone shape beam ...which can effectively sit stationary over brush and watch the fish echoes move in and around the brush ...
-----
This is not to say DI (or SI) can't be used sitting stationary ... It just won't make pretty internet pictures sitting still ... and it's less likely fish will be in the thin slice beam sitting still ...

Rickie I have been having trouble when fishing brush piles knowing where they are in relation to seeing them on the screen in DI. So what you are saying is that in 2d I might be able to set up over the top of them better as far as watching the screen? I am fishing in 15 to 18 ft. of water.
There is more likelihood (of brush showing in the 200kHz 2d displayed image) to actually be directly under the xducer ...

Conversely, in a DI Sonar beam, the brush can be anywhere in that fan beam (as CP explained) ...

I FISH BP ALL THE TIME,I USE 2D AND DI EACH HELP THE OTHER,AS FOR KNOWING WHERE BP IS ,YOU SHOULD HAVE YOUR DUCER A LITTLE TILTED TO THE FRONT,THIS HELP IN TELLING WHERE BP IS BY TURNING TM LEFT AND IF IT START SHOWING UP THAN IT IS LEFT,AS YOU TURN MOTOR AND WATCH DIRECTION YOU KNOW WHERE BP IS AND WHEN YOU ARE IN MIDDLE OF IT THE 2D SCREEN WILL GET THICK AND THE HIGHEST SPOT ON UNIT WHILE DI WILL SHOW IF FISH ARE IN IT,WIFE AND I FISH SIDE BY SIDE BY TURNING TM I SOMETIMES HAVE TO TELL HER THAT JIG IS TOO HIGH THEN SHE DROPS DOWN TO WHERE FISH OR TO TOP OF BRUSH,YES WE STILL MARK OUR LINES,BUT BEFORE THAT I CAST TO PILES FIRST WITH A MARKER JUST UP WIND OF BRUSH SO THAT WHEN I GET OVER BRUSH MARKER WILL BE IN FRONT OF ME AN NOT SIDE OR BEHIND ME,IF YOU SET 2D UP RIGHT YOU CAN SEE FISH MOVING UP AND DOWN IN BRUSH UNLESS NEW BRUSH WITH LEAVES WHICH DI WILL TELL YOU AFTER YOU LEARN TO INTERPRET IT WELL,SO TO ANSWER QUESTION USE BOTH,NOW TRUE DI WORKS MUCH BETTER THAN BLENDED DI WHICH I DO NOT CARE MUCH FOR ON FRONT
Very informative, as always. Thank you RICKIE. I guess I should get to know the 2D Zoom function to help stay on small piles...
Thank you genec; I will be shimming my transducer today to get some angle on it...
I agree 100% with Rickie, genec on the 2d, DI, as I have fished 1000's of BP. The only thing that's better is if you install a 360TM.
I have just started fishing brush piles. I find the bp's with side imaging, mark them and then troll to them using 2D. I know I'm staying on top of them because I can see the clutter of the bp and baitfish on the screen, and I catch fish. My question is how do I dial in my 2D settings to get a clear image sitting still. I get a decent picture moving but just clutter sitting on top of the brush.
justatrollin, It is impossible I believe without more data for anyone to help with your setup. Their are a lot of people on this forum that I'm confident can help if you will provide more information.
1. Unit type, model, and transducer
2. Are you using 200kHz, 200/83kHz, 83kHz for your 2D
3. If HB are you using "Clear" or "Switch Fire" mode
If possible a screen shot would be a great help. If you do not know how to save a SnapShot on an HB or LOW we can help with that.
I have attached one for an example:

I am using a HB 899 at the console and a 859 at the bow. I use switch fire clear mode. I get an image like you posted while moving I'm just asking if I can get that good of an image while sitting on top of the brush pile. I usually keep the chart speed on about 4 but I have run it down and up. Maybe I need to try jigging mode? Also I usually use 200 kHz on the transducer built into my xi5 while sitting over a bp. I turn the sonar off on my console unit as well.
Passing over a brush pile using 2d will display = no brushpile/then brushpile/then no brushpile again across the horizontal area of the display ...giving the mind's eye a visual of a solitary brush ...
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/r...pshyxxz2em.png
This is simply because -(as the boat travels over and past the brushplile) = the brushpile is not in the cone/ then the brushpile is in the cone/then the brushpile is not in the cone again ...
-----
-----
Conversely, sitting stationary over a brushpile is keeping the brushpile in the cone continuously ... which paints the brushpile across the entire horizontal area of the display - giving the mind's eye a visual that the brushpile has no beginning --- nor any end ...

It definately tells you the brushpile is in cone ... it just doesn't look like the pretty solitary brushpile in the 1st image above ...
Rickie
BTW ... this image shows how removing the upper section of the water column (using the "Upper Range"" setting) effectively zooms and enlarges the structure on the display ...

Nice write up Rickie, very nice explanation.
What a great thread with loads of good information.
I am a new user of a HB 798C SI/DI. I set it up as portable in an ammo box and a clamp-on ducer mount. Gives me the ability to use rented Jon boats at State waters.
I am so new at using this equipment that most of the time I don't know what I am seeing on the screen.
I fished Lake Tholocco in a rented Bass Tracker this past Saturday and kept the unit in SI/DI split to troll the channel in the lake. It was very helpful in that I was able to keep the boat mostly in the channel. I could see bigger structure but certainly missed some stuff.
My settings were (200/83), Clear mode, Blue palette, lower range set to 30' (deepest part of the lake), SI /DI sensitivity set near max, Fish alarm off, and I can't remember the other settings.
After reading this thread, I think I will start using Sonar more often
Rickie is 100% correct I just couldn't find a screen shot where I was over BP for a longtime. GPS speed on my example was .2mph (chart speed 3), but I had slowly drifted over the BP. The 2D is history "right to left" so as Rickie stated it will fill the screen from the top of BP to the bottom depth if you can stay over it long enough.
justatrollin, I have a 958 DI on the bow with latest software (7.660) installed. It does not have a jigging mode like my 999 SI on the console. I assume because it was built as a DI model and does not need to prioritize SI. Rickie may know fore sure what the answer to that is.
If you have your RTS Window (Real Time Sonar) "ON" and set to "Narrow" you will know the instant you are at the BP (remember) everything left of the rightside is History. The RTS Window is like the old Flasher.

Jigging Mode is only available in the core series HB SI units ...
HB changed the ping sequence with the release of the software version that included 360 ... they changed this to prioritize SI over 2d (unfortunately to the detriment of the 2d quality) ..
Jigging Mode changes the ping sequence back to the "pre-360" software to prioritize 2d over SI ...
Jigging Mode is under the Xpress "Menu" when full screen 2d is displayed ...

Also on my Helix 10, I can watch my jig when using the DI. Its not showing it 100% of the time. But Its enough that I can keep up with where the jig is. And even see the fish moving in on DI. I have DI set where its on the narrow beam. So its not shooting the wide angle. Its sure fun watching a video came while catching crappie out of brush piles. Or as last Friday, catching them off single stumps scattered along the creek channel.
Wondering if the core units allow you to chose between narrow med and wide DI beams? I know my old 987c SI did not allow me to choose. Wish I could find a new screen for it. AS it still shows better detail on SI then the Helix 10 does.
ShilohRed, my 998c and 999c SI both have narrow, med, and wide DI setting.
Guys, check out this website. http://www.technologicalangler.com/home
He focuses on use of HB equip but same principles apply for others. Instructional videos #1&2 are really good and will answer a lot of questions. He also has a bunch of free videos if you search YouTube.
Bottom line for SI or DI you need to be moving to get those amazing photo like images. IMO, 2d sonar (narrow cone) is the way to go when trying to vertical fish cover. Narrow cone insures you are directly overtop of structure (i.e. Display will be clear if not over cover)

Picture of crappie near a brushpile
In the DI side, you can see the brushpile to the right of the school of crappie. My best shot ever. Wish I didn't have the 2D image on that setting.
That is a killer shot Gabe.... :ThumbsUp
If it is smearing your screen, U on top of somthin'. Drop a hook in it.
