So I decided to start painting my own cranks instead of buying $5+ bandits. I got a batch of 20 painted up tonight and I think they came out pretty good for my first attempt ever with an airbrush. My question for you guys who have done this what do you use for the protective clear coat and what's the best method to doing it? 2 ton 30 minute devcon epoxy. It is High gloss and super tuff. Just brush it on with some super cheap paint brushes from the school section at wal-mart.

I've tried several different topcoats but always go back to Devcon 30 minute epoxy with a brush. I also built a rotisserie from a gas grill unit and turn mine for at least 8 hours immediately after I brush on the Devcon. Even though it says 30 minute dry time, your actual working time is MUCH less.
Another trick is you can take glitter and mix it in the Devcon before you brush it on. It will speed up the kick time so mix it in small batches.
2 part Auto Clear coat.

Beautiful job on those cranks!
Should work. You better make sure it dries clear as some have a yellow hue to it when it dries and will alter your color on yours cranks.

RK1 .... I'm gonna go way out on a limb, here, and say that none of those cranks will catch a SINGLE fish :yikes (most more'n likely they'll all catch MANY, MANY fish :biggrin )

I use Krylon Triple-Thick Crystal Clear Glaze (rattle can). While it is not as durable a coating as epoxy, I figure I will loose the crank before I ever have to re-coat it. And it does not require a drying wheel, which epoxy does to get an even coat.
I use very simple color patterns when painting cranks. White or silver with a black back, all black and chartreuse with a black back.
And yours look great!

I'll take 3 of the Black and Orange, 6 of the purple and Black and a short stack of the Chartruse and Black. That is some really nice work. Going to catch a lot of fish with those.

Thanks for all the compliments guys, I can already tell this is an addicting hobby. I'm adding some 2 part epoxy and some epoxy with glitter mixed in right now, hopefully get to field test em soon!

As has already been said, epoxy is the stuff and make sure it says clear in the label as some have the yellow tint. All my stuff is still packed and I can't get to the name of it, but I use a slow cure (24 hrs) which skins over in about 6. Working in the garage, it was a chore sometimes to keep the bugs out of it. I would coat them last and turn out the lights if I worked at night or coat during the day and no issues there. Hung by a paper clip on the front tie I let them hang and flow on their own, dripping on a piece of scrap paper. Check the eyes about once an hour to make sure the flow is complete and not filling the eyes. Clear them with a toothpick and you're good. Caught a lot on mine and sold some others, everyone happy so far --except the fish.

That's very similar to what I use Ifish, and lots cheaper. I really like the results I get.

I've been asked several times how I built my rotisserie for crank drying. I used a plastic tub, drilled holes for the shaft and for the motor, zip tied the motor in place then used plastic clamps from Harbor Freight. Way too simple to pass up. These are Bandit 250 Ledge cranks that I bought off eBay in solid white. I tape the bills, wipe them down with lacquer thinner then paint them and seal with 30 minute Devcon epoxy. I rotate them at least 8 hours, usually overnight.

Cool setup Dux. I used a microwave motor, about 4 or 6 rpm if I remember right, and a few hardware store basic parts.
