It is a sad day when the VFW had to remove the flags (hundreds) from the vets in some of the Grave sites in Jackson, Tennessee and other areas after being displayed over the weekend. First time this has happened. Seems the flags are an inconvenience for the lawn trimmers.
I am hurt and angry.
Are you being serious!!!! What direction is this country headed in??? Treating our military like dogs and then treating the "leeches in society" like kings and handing freebies all around. Hope I don't offend anyone....but this disrespect for our military makes me nauseated!

I have lived by this saying we used in Nam. "It don't mean nothing!" We all know and believe in our thoughts and hearts and know what is right. Liberalizim and the left just doesn't get it and never will and being politically right just plain sucks.
I'm not a veteran and not by choice. I don't know how people can think the way they do. When I speak my mind, my wife gives me heck and tells me to hush. The older I get the filter comes of my outspoken nature more every day. I too believe the Politically correct garbage is getting out of hand. This is just another example of those who did the job and paid the price being pushed aside for those who have no right to say anything pushed to the forefront. Sorry Tom, this should not have happened.

It's happening all over. My wife complains about it all the time. I think some places will allow you to place something more permanent that they can weed eat and mow around and places the items left off the ground.
Just plain wrong! I'm sure the people laid to rest there had a few inconveniences during their service to our country. Maybe the guy should just do his job, whatever it takes. If it is that big a deal they should place a metal sleeve in the ground and slightly above that a flag can be placed in and they can trim right against it. Always trying to find a reason not to do something instead of a way to do it!!! I agree with everything that has been said above. I know we aren't suppose to discuss politics here, but I am not very happy with our state of affairs!!!

This is just a thought... kind of a "between veterans" thing.
Have you ever been to a veterans grave site and saw a penny, a nickel, a dime, or a quarter resting on their grave? The families and people in the know, understands what this means. For those that don't, here you go...
A Penny left on a grave means you served with that person
A nickel means you went to boot camp with them
A dime means you went to war with them
A quarter means you were there when he gave the ultimate sacrifice
(there are several variations of this, but now you know). A way of telling a family member that a buddy was there.
By no means does it take the place of a flag. My personal thought is that EVERY veteran grave (regardless of marker the family chooses) should also contain the exact same cross that is displayed as a grave marker in Arlington. This should be considered "standard issue" when a veteran finally passes into the next life. Just my opinion.
I was just glad that the Dept. of the Navy sent representatives to my Dad's funeral and presented the flag to my Mother. I hear people talk about closure and it seem sort of odd idea to me...someone needing closure to something. But now when I think back I think for me that was a sort of closure in my mind. I guess I never really got that emotional about the things left around the grave, I felt they were temporary anyway. I had seen the flag that mattered to me.I'm not saying thats right or wrong,just how I really felt about it.
The grounds keeper company has finally issued an apology.
all the flags i put around my dads resting spot get removed as well .....i am pretty sure the grounds keepers do it ....i am offended every time but i just go get more flags and put them right back in hopes that some day they will get the message i aint gunna stop it until they do .....
I think this thread has gotten blow out of proportion. Most, if not all, cemeteries have policies about leaving memorials on grave sites. Most of the policies are for safety reasons.
Flags, when is it appropriate to remove a flag from a grave site? After it falls over, becomes faded, etc. After respect has been shown. How long does it take to show respect, one hour, one day, one week?
My Scout Troop has an agreement with one of our local cemeteries. We put flags out on all the veterans graves for memorial day weekend and their staff removes the flags before the next mowing. They return the flags to us, and we use them again next year. Our veterans our honored by future generations, and the cemetery remains respectful of occupants, not just veterans.

Amazing! These lawn crews can perfectly cut around a bag of empty chips or an empty soda can, but cant manage a flag honoring a veteran. Etiquette should be mute when honoring a fallen veteran. Those flags should be a permanent marker 365 days a year. God Bless all who served and the sacrifices they and their families endured.
While I agree there should be a flag flying 365 for each. I didn't write our Flags Etiquette. I will show my respect as per the rules, it would be disrespectful for me to do otherwise.Quote:

I am not a member of the American Legion. This is the Legions opinion/rule.
I am a life member of the VFW since 1972. The VFW has no such rule that I know of.
The flag flies 24/7 at my home. At my age, I make my own rules.
Better check again.

Removal
Flag etiquette dictates that the Stars and Stripes only flies during daylight hours. The flag is customarily lowered at sunset. However, National Cemetery Administration Directive 3220 allows for flags to be displayed on military graves in Veteran Administration National Cemeteries from the weekend before Memorial Day until “shortly” afterward. If you place a flag on a grave for Memorial Day, be sure to remove it soon afterward to avoid it being damaged by bad weather or being removed by those caring for the cemetery.
The flag flies 24/7 at my house as well. In fact my flag pole is 5' shorter thanks to a tornado 2 years ago. It's also a little off vertical and the truck at the top is damaged. But she flies every day.
Here is a view of it from my recliner. Had my knee replaced last week Tuesday so this is close as I am getting today. My Marine Corp flag under the US flag.

These are not National cemeteries that I speak of. They are private. We pay maintenance fees here. People taking the pennies off dead folks eyes. Sad.
since you're talking flag etiquette here, if you have a flag flying all the time it's supposed to be lit up at night.
