I Got Worms (Catalpa)

A couple of years ago I set out some catalpha seedlings hoping to grow some trees and raise some worms. Last year due to the severe drought they were kinda stressed but managed to grow some anyway. Never saw any worms last year but really did not expect any.

A couple of days ago, I checked on the trees and was surprised to find worms happily munching away on the leaves. Right now they are young and small and in the light colored stage. I just hope they do not run out of leaves before they reach maturity. I am really looking forward to being able to fish with some later on. It will be interesting to see how fast they get big.

It depends on how fast they grow. I would not be surprised if you had a few next year. However I would really look for them year after next. It would probably help to fertizie the trees some. If we have a fairly wet year they should put on a good bit of growth.

Congrats on the worms. Do you catch sacalait with them or just perch?

Well I understand that they are good for several things. I know they are good for bream and they are also very good for catfish. I do not know about white perch but I will find out if I get to try them. MY crop is kinda limited this year but hopefully it will increase in years to come.

I remember one year someone on the forum posted they had worms if anyone wanted to come get some. Wish I'd taken them up on that, as I've always heard good things about them, but never used them. I hope you have a lot of luck with them Charliee! Maybe it'll help you land that monster out in Hosston! :)

Those worms will flat out catch the bream. I've seen many times after casting out if a bite doesn't occur within 30 seconds, reel it in because it's gone. Make sure you take a bunch when going. I've had a hard time of keeping the little fish from them.

Watch out for wasp and rain crows. They will put a hurting on you

The only thing I hate about them is biting them into to turn them inside out. Rough on the teeth

I can tell you for certain, a white perch will eat anything you put in front of it, especially minnows or worms.

I read some people turn them inside out with a nail but not as fun.

We have two catalpa trees here in the Alexandria area. We have found dozens of them all around us. Never seen a worm. Would love to find some to seed our trees with.

When I was a kid we would "knock" Tagga worms for spending money. All gone here. Pesticides.

The fire Ants kill most of the worms before they can burrow deep in the ground to return later as the Fly that lays the Eggs

So I need to be sure to eradicate the fire ants around the catalpa trees then. I never thought of that. Thank you.

Best thing I have found for controlling fire ants is a product called Taurus. Can be bought at probably any farm chemical supply. Only mix 4 oz. with enough water to spray an acre. it is a repellant. Doesn't kill them but they will definitely move away from any area that has been sprayed. I tried everything to get rid of them in my yard. This is the only thing that has worked for me. Only have to spray once a year.

Rick, Good to hear from you! I've never heard of Taurus before, but it has fantastic reviews. Thanks for letting us know. I've got a horrible ant problem in the yard myself, and will have to look for this stuff.

Another product to rid your yard of fire ants that is safe around you kids and pets is Talstar. It's a granular product that is spread with a hand spreader, it looks like sand. You only need to spread it twice a year, once in early spring and again in the middle of summer. It is not a poison but a neurotoxin that does them in by affecting their nervous system. It works almost immediately, if you pour some on a mound and return a couple of hours later and you will see thousands of ants on top of the mound either dead or kicking wildly. A twenty five pound bag costs around 25 dollars and is enough to treat around 5000 square feet which is about what a normal city lot is when you subtract the area covered by the house, barn, shed or garage. If you have a large property you can treat the area where you want to keep the ants out of. It's been a life saver for my wife who is allergic to their stings and requires a trip to the hospital if bitten. It's cheap, safe, and effective. It should be available at your farm supply or Do It Yourself pest control.

I don't think you want to use any pesticides directly under your C trees. I use cornmeal on any ants that show up under my trees or in my wriggler bed and the ants disappear. I don't know if they die or leave but they get gone. :dono

Tony coffee grounds are good for your worms and ants hate the stuff and will keep them out.

I thought I would like to mention the eggs are layed by a small tan colored moth, not just a fly!!!!

That's where all my coffee grounds and vegetable trimmings go as well as a healthy covering of leaves once in a while. That worm dirt makes good starter soil for any vegetables I start in pots :ThumbsUp
