the story of bo and joe

Joe is a year around crappie fisherman that puts in countless hours on the water. He cuts brush and weights it down for attracting fish in his few favorite spots on the lake. Joe helps the other fisherman when they inquire information but Joe doesn't speak about his fishing spots. Who would after a decade of work? Bo mainly fishes spring but he talks fishing year around. That's what he is best at, talking. Bo has talked to so many fisherman over the years he knows all the how's, tos, and does. Bo is pretty much the go to guy in the crappie community, and he knows it. Its what drives Bo.
Joe is out on the lake looking for post spawn crappie and stumbles up on a pile of big spawned out females in his brush piles. The fishing has been tough and there is not many people out fishing. Bait shops don't even have a report. So Bo calls Joe and like always inquires as much information as possible. Joe feels sorry for his buddy Bo and slips up and tells him about the spot he is catching these big fish. Bo is so excited it's almost as if he actually caught the fish! He logs on to his favorite fishing site and gives a very nice detailed report of where how and to catch these big ol fish(Bo is loved on his fav fishing site , after all he knows more than most about crappie fishing ). The following day Joe goes to his fishing spot to find 3 other boats in the same area. A little strange he thought for a weekday. As the day went on he saw them catching fish and posing for pictures like they had never caught a fish before. Even stranger was that Bo never showed up. He seemed so excited about Joe's report. As the week days turned to weekend the boats nearly doubled every day. At this point there were 18 boats in Joe's little fishing spot, and none of them were bos boat. Joe looked around and decided to reel in his poles and start all over, he hadn't gotten a bite all day.

This coming from a Joe, try and be smart about posting locations because chances are u didn't find anything. The guy u followed, saw, told u, u read about, etc did.

Sounds like joe learned a hard lesson and will be sending bo to the community holes from now on!

never go full joe. learned that the hard way myself chasing ducks when i was about 20. now its either come with me and keep your mouth shut bout it or u dont go anymore. i may give some advice on what im using how deep etc... but location is rarely given out unless i just dont care that much. sorry u got burnt i believe i'd be giving old bo an earful

This is so true Jeremy and I must say that you are a good writer the words you wrote came off the tongue so elegant and graceful. I give your 5 stars for this I have critiqued this and find no flaws. But I must say that I did cry at the end just because you spoke the truth and ole Joe ended up getting the dirty end of the stick.

Yep, never give away the specifics of that "hot spot". It can turn friends into enemies. That's never encouraged, especially here on Crappie.com. You always have to watch what you say cause it could be anyone that's posting it. That person coulda mentioned something at the baitshop and someone there spread the word. You just never know. But please do post pics, we all love pics. Just change your location, cause that too can be a give away. Or just make sure it's all water in the background.

Well said Jeremy ,we've talked about these matters before one on one and i couldn't agree more.I have a little story myself.Years ago before I knew anything about trolling I met this guy that I consider to be one of the best.So after a little convincing he set out to teach me how to troll and I was quick learner.Limits were flying in the boat and thought I was something special but in reality it was just perfect conditions,probably could have caught them on a cigarette butt.Well after a few years we became good friends and shared information,which is helpful for sure.But one day my friend calls and says he had found the mother load of 2lb fish and i was eager to try them.It was a spot like none other it was way back in the middle of nowhere and just looked fishy and boy was it loaded with giant fish.I was catching 20 fish limits in two hours and they were huge.Well after getting the big head,wanting to brag i started posted posting pics on public forums and giving too much information within a few days our secret was no longer.Well my friend found out what I had done and 6 years later we are barely on speaking terms.So my point is be careful how you share information and good luck out there.

I learned a lesson the hard way, not about giving information out but about asking, I'm from the Nashville TN area and got on a crappie .com forum to try to get some intel for an upcoming trip the wife and I were taking. I asked for to many details and watched for two days with no response till I got a PM. I was told told I was asking for to many details and I needed to figure it out for myself. I could have taken offense but didn't, he was right, I rephrased my inquiry, I believe it went something like "coming down for the weekend are they biting", I got probably 10 responses that put me in the general depth and areas, that is all I was looking for, I enjoy figuring it out myself. One day I hope to make down there, was thinking maybe the crank fest not to find the hot fishing holes but to learn from a group of like minded crappie enthusiast how to better my skills. Good read, I think Joe needs to talk to Bo and Bo owes Joe an apology, friends are not that easy to come by.

4 stars there was nothing said about a mimi or a bikini but very true story have been there and couldn't believe my eyes the next weekend didn't think you could get that many boats in a creek

Dad was a Joe, While fishing, trapping or hunting it was 'Not a word to anyone', also have two Joe brothers one says 'don't even tell Mom' so you would think it would soak in, but I guess I'm a Bo because sometimes it's too easy to say too much, so I have to keep telling myself to SHUT-UP.--shu

I went fishing yesterday.....caught a limit near the big crooked tree just south of where the second creek runs into the lake . Depth about three ft. All fish were caught on blue and silver whatya ma callits.:biggrin

I had the same scenario happen on bass spots on KY lake 30 years ago. I took a guy who swore me to secrecy on his spots but took every Tom,Dick and Curly to my spots that I had never seen another boat on. When I showed up on one of them and he was fishing out of another guy's boat and wouldn't even acknowledge who I was, I learned a very valuable lesson. He learned some new swear words.

I've had it happen since but nowhere near as hurtful as the 1st time.

Hate to lie to anyone, so the hardest for me is dealing with a stranger at the ramp.. most respectful folks just ask about bait, color and depth. Which is fine, makes me cringe every time when they ask where at did you catch em at..? I don't tell spots usually to just anyone, and if I took someone in my boat out and they betrayed me, then I don't know how I'd take that.. that's the ultimate no no in my book. I try to keep blabber mouths out of the boat... and it ain't just got to do with just fishing spots, just in general....Lol Great Story OP!!

One of my buddies took another one our friends fishin one day while I was working and just happened to check facebook (back when i still had it) and our buddy that he took fishing was giving a play by play of when where and how they were catching the fish hahaha! I called and told my friend what he was doing and he took him straight to the boat ramp and dropped him off haha And when someone asks where you caught the fish at you ant got to lie just simply say in the mouth :dono

My wife LOVES to pull cranks and is a great partner in the boat. I have to warn her often to watch backgrounds and locations when she posts pics. She often has folks stop her to ask if we really catch those fish on cranks and where we catch them. It has been a learning curve for her to not give away too much info. I think it's pretty sorry when guys think they can get info out of her when they know they won't get it from me.

That is pretty bad mrdux but there are some strange people out there!

it's just like with anything anymore fellas everyone is looking for a quick handout instead of putting in the time and earning it. we all wanna go to the lake with that little edge that way we can start catching right away, and i get maximizing time on the water. but no matter who or where u are at, there's always that guy looking to piggy back. we usually make a trip to enid/sardis every spring and have been for about 5 yrs now. we always have pretty good succes. there's a guy from our town that has been going for a week at a time for 20-25 yrs and still cant figure it out. now we call him the drift sock bc we may as well tie a rope to his boat and drag him around

I have three simple rules in my boat. 1) no alcohol, 2) no throwing trash in lake, use my trash can, & 3) no telling where we went. I take very few fishing and it's become fewer these past few years. My wife and my golden retriever are my main boat bums. A few have shared with me and those spots will not be revealed. To those individuals, thanks again.

I love taking people fishing with me. I ain't afraid of sharing info. I feel that most people need to know "Where NOT To Go". BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I agree BRM! Im the same way! But I rarely catch crappie in the same spot for longer than a week or 2. I will tell people what I caught and where (as long as its my info to give. If some one gives me tips i keep my mouth shut about their info.) I have found out for me most of the time if info is more than a day old....things are likely to change ALOT! So if I give you info its a good place to start but dont spend alot of time there if ya aint gettin bit. MOVE! I have found more often than not when Im told where to go and what to do things have changed by the time I make it there. So I have to change something to get bit, bait/method/or even location. Not many of us get to constantly fish and stay on top of them. Most of us have to work. And we are all (FISHERMEN/OUTDOORSMEN) on the same team! If I had placed a ton of brush piles myself and I was a solo pole guy I would be reluctant to give out coordinances. But from a troller POV help people out. Things change often. Whats hot one day aint gonna be hot the next and it should make people proud to see when they HELPED someone and they SUCCEED! Plus people (average joes that dont know how to fish try to take their kids) and dont catch that makes the kiddo hate fishing and BAM, Another future outdoorsmen lost to the Liberal, don't hurt my feelings, wimpified new age males! And then the kiddo's kids dont even get an opportunity to get out in the outdoors and in just a generation or two all Outdoors is lost. There is no longer any one hunting and fishing IF it is even still LEGAL to do so. So if some dont wanna help...thats ur decision and i definitely respect that.... but that wont be my choice. Instant gratification is not the way to teach youth imo. I remember deer hunting with my dad and the first two seasons I saw 2 deer. I would tag along even in the summer and early fall planting food plots, hanging stands, etc. The hard work, preparation, failure, and then success is what created the passion.

Wow Jeremy your are on point again. I do agree that instant gratification is what everyone is looking for Adults and Children . I think some of the best lessons are learned on those tough days when you weren't the winner.

You are right my friend. The work is the fun part for me as well. But I was 8-9yrs old before I started enjoying that part of it. I just thank god that my dad was a good outdoorsmen and was able to put me to some successful hunting and fishing trips when I was 3-8 years old that way I am definitely interested in the work that went into making the success happen. Requires a mature mind to understand cause and effect. Work hard=Pays off. But a 3 year old mind just dont get that yet. All they understand is catching is fun. Rare to find a kid that was exposed to an xbox at 3yrs old and not a good hunting/fishing til he is 8yrs old that will even be interested in giving the outdoors a fighting chance over the xbox. I agree with you but also disagree with the starting out of the tradition. I hate that people expose their kids to video games. I have an xbox and used to love it. But my son has never and will never see me play it. Not something i want him interested in yet. But man people are turning their kids onto video games these days because it makes raising a kid so much easier. Keeps them out of your hair. But I prefer to let my son be in my hair constantly and put him onto some fish for now. Its hard sometimes but I wouldnt trade it for the world.

This is just what I have interpreted after seeing what is going on around me in my area. I understand different regions have different ways of doing/ not doing things. I spent the entire weekend on a sandbar with my family and extended family this weekend. Had the entire sandbar to ourselves. My mom asked me...."Where are all the people?" I informed her people dont do this kind of stuff anymore. Im just 29 years old and when I was 15 the sandbars around here looked like miami beaches it was so crowded. And now not a soul other than us! People love their TV's and AC too much now. That is a HUGE decline in the way things were and the way things are now in just 15 years. What will the next 15 years hold?
