Just saw this, had no idea they existed. What do you guys know about the Golden Crappie Species?. Wow beautiful. I want one. 3 lber preferably.
Here is a pic of one just caught recently I found on Facebook. Really cool and beautiful. Was this fish dipped in food coloring or can this really occur in the wild? Thought I'd share and maybe D-10 can chime in.

I have seen pictures a couple of time on the Internet. That's all I know about the fish. It's kinda funny though as I reply to this there is a gold Toyota Tacoma with a gold Crappie.com sticker in the drive through at Sonic in Maumelle.

If this is a real deal I would really, really like to catch the Golden Crappie. Almost as good... would be to see a fishing buddy's face in the boat after catching one LOL

I don't doubt that they are legit. I do doubt that they are a different subspecies. I would think they would be more along the lines of color phase bears or turkeys. If they were a separate subspecies you would think they would show up more common, or at least in some bodies of water. I would love to catch one or even see one in person.

If you look close the gold crappie is dripping water/coloring or something and the other ones not. I'm with slackline don't think it's legit. I know Bass pro sells a garlic spray tat color.
They make minnow dye now. Online is a 50/50 shot at being true AT BEST!!!!!
I don't doubt that they are legit. Color variations In fish and animals happen. I have seen enough pictures of golden crappie to believe that is probably the case. Could this one be faked? Probably. But the pictures of them I have seen makes me think they are not all faked.

I know the northern black crappie can take on a golden hue in their coloring, but have not seen one this colored before. I think the pic is legit, but I also think it could have been dyed maybe before the pic. There is also other reports of Golden crappie caught, but the ones I have seen are not as Golden as this one.

Fish is missing most of the markings and has a weird eye. I am thinking genetic mutation...or as we use to say back in the day...freak of nature. Me I like my fish to look normal..don't know why just do. You all can catch them things just look weird to me.They told you all that radioactive waste leaking into the environment was gonna cause problems LOL.
If I remember correctly one of my old crappie angler magazines has an article on color variations in crappie. It spoke about the black nose and also the golden. They are rare but do occur naturally.

Looks hokey to me. I am thinking that fish got dyed. Don't doubt there are color variations in some lakes, but that one looks like a dang goldfish.
I have seen a similar looking crappie on the net before. If memory serves me corretly, the angler was hypothesizing that it was a crappie crossed with another species. I doubt this to be true. Fish, like other animals, can sometimes have genetic defects, some of which can effect color. My best guess is that there is some kind of recessive genetic marker that occasionally gets "turned on" resulting in the abnormal and distinct color. This is most definitely not a distinct species. Another interesting thing to think about is how this bright gold color would make this fish, or any fish, more susceptible to being eaten by a bigger fish. I bet that this genetic anamoly is very rare and that most of the crappie with this condition get eaten when they are fingerlings. So Russ, if you catch a 3 pounder, you my friend have an extremely rare fish!

I was hanging out at a friend's taxidermy shop one time when a guy brought in a bass that was this same color. It wasn't very big, maybe 1 1/2 lbs or so.
From the reading I have done about these catches, the fish in the original post is from the same waters as the one the lady with the hoody and ball cap is holding.
Thanks for chiming in Matt. I had a feeling the coloration was genetic.
I saw an article where there was a gold colored largemouth caught in a tournament in Canada. The catch was deemed to be a largemouth and was allowed to be weighed in. So I googled golden largemouth bass and the images showed color variations similar to the ones that come up for golden crappie. Some the fins are more golden and some are the whole fish.

They ate to many gold fish.
I have seen the evidence and I would rule that the Golden Crappie do exist in the wild. Now if we can get Matt to get a Gov't Grant and start a Golden Crappie hatchery to raise to a stocking size and stock in Arkansas Waters That would be just Great!!! I know wishful thinking.. but would it not be cool to get on here and say "Report Caught a nice mess of Gold'ens today with a picture" HAHA!!!
I can mount a crappie and paint em what ever color yaw want!!! Bring em all on! I believe they do exist in the wild. But just saying if anyone wants a gold/pink/red crappie....let me know! :biggrin
The crappie I am chasing are Platinum, I'm so past the Gold now since these are already all over the Internet

I'll make a deal with yall. Bring me any golden colored crappie alive and I will make sure that one of the hatcheries gets it and we will spawn it out. It would be a cool experiment to see what happens when a crappie that has the golden color reproduces. What % of its spawn would exhibit the same color trait? Who knows...Quote:

Matt I forget the name but the fish was caught some where in Wisc along with some others out of the same waters, you can find it on line pretty easy. The fish was sent to the WISC DNR for examination. All we need to do is get the WISC DNR to electro shock us up a good sized male and female Gold'en Crappie i would think a Gold Male n Female would increase the odds, and i'll bet you know how to do the rest. A Golden Crappie Explosion!!! here in Arkansas. Get on the Horn with WISC man. This could be your biggest career achievement brother LOL

I am so ready to retire and chase the Golden crappie too, I have caught so many silver ones over the years...They are only getting seven more silver years outta Jr here, Then it's Golden Crappie time. LOL
