SCAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Last year I replied to such and ad about a tractor. They want you to send the money and then they will ship the boat to you because their (fill in the blank) drives a truck nation wide and will deliver for free. They also try to convince you to send the money via a certain method which is supposed to be safe as they wont turn loose the money until you have received the product. It's all baloney. It would be great to get such a deal. I would buy several and make thousands by selling them local. Like the saying goes, "if it's too good to be true it's probably BS". Don't fall for it.

Typical Craigslist scams .... many of which have been going on since Craigslist was formed.
If it were a real deal, they wouldn't need to go through Craigslist to sell it, since a local would have snatched it up within hours of it being put up for sale.
I actually thought they were a little overpriced!!!! Never been a fan of Ranger boats or of anything with the word "bass" in it!!
These are what is called a "Phishing" scam. They are thrown out there to get people to call or email. After that, several things can happen. Most of the scams like this that I have seen, they want to send you the boat, motor, trailer, skid steer, etc... and have you pay the shipping cost. If you purchase the item, the shipping cost comes off the top (so they say). The scam is the price to see the product (which you will never see).
You figure, what kind of an idiot does something like this? Well, for every 10,000 people that see this for what it is, one guy is always out there thinking he is getting a deal. The scammer has zero time, effort, or money invested in the scam. All he did was find a picture of someone's boat online and posted it.
Thanks. Yeah it just looks too good to be true. I did join a FB group called, "Alabama boats for sale" on Facebook and I think that's a bit safer. You can close this thread. Sorry. I just wanted to ask you guys!
I think I'll leave it open for awhile .... as a public service announcement warning :biggrin
:ThumbsUp
Several years ago I was looking for a Polaris Ranger 6x6. I found one on eBay for a good, but not extremely cheap, price and contacted the seller. From the pictures of the rig he supposedly had for sale, it was obvious the pics were made in the NE US. The seller said the Ranger was actually in Poland but could be shipped to my door for a small fee.I may have been born at night but it wasn't LAST NIGHT. I stopped my communication and reported the scam to eBay. I continued to get e-mails from the seller for months until I threatened to come find him and stomp a mudhole in his rear end.
I seen one posted with an automatic transmission - man I'm tired of shifting my boat and the clutch is hard to deal with!

My co-worker just told me he had $2,500 saved up, went to look at this Jon Boat that was listed for $1,500. He said the sticker said 1993. He asked the guy has it been in the water since '93, and the guy said yes and the motor ran good and everything. So he put it in the water and it sank! Really?! That's got me a bit weary now ... he told me that $2,000 will buy you junk. I guess I got to save more up. :dono

I am aiming to get something like this :biggrin:fish
Do yourself a huge favor and dont even think about one with less than a 42" bottom. Personally I would never consider anything less than a 48" bottom.
According to Google, this is the info on this boat:
This Sylvan Marine outboard utility has a aluminum hull, is 14 feet long and 57 inches wide at the widest point. The boat weighs approximately 185 pounds.
Best way is to ask seller to measure the bottom of the boat from the outside of transom (across the back where the drain plug hole is). A 48" bottom is ok but most folk prefer 52 or 54" as the gunwall height, horsepower, people / cargo capacity and stability usually increases too. Another clue for jon boats is : river jons are more narrow than lake jons. Titles are sometimes a problem, make sure they gottem in hand.
Yup, craigslist if fulla scams but I've also got some good deals too. Ask questions, use yer noggin n gut.
Thanks! Great tips! I'll be sure to ask and measure myself when I get there as well. Now that we got that out of the way, lets talk trailer. I know to request 2" hitch, but I'm guessing I need to find out how much the trailer weights as well when I look at the boats? Jon Boats at most would be what, 200lbs? About 100 lbs for the small motor attacked to it. My car has a towing capacity of 1,000 lbs.
Oh, and it will only be on lakes. No rivers. I'll be setting it up for Crappie fishing ONLY.
This boat is a 1436....that means 14 ft. long and 36 in. across the bottom. Very narrow....going to be tippy. https://bham.craigslist.org/boa/5591654208.html
Yeah 2" ball is most common nowadays. And don't forget about tongue weight on your vehicle. Some trailers you can unbolt and move the axle to adjust tongue weight. Most salvage yards will have a scale if ya wanna weigh the whole rig.
How would I go by finding out how much tongue weight it can withstand? All is reads is towing capacity 1,000 lbs.
2013 Chevy Impala
It has the holes already made into the frame for the tow package too. All I have to do is buy the trailer and have someone install it.
If you had my car, show me a pic of a boat you think would be best. I am looking into all of this now, so that I don't waste a bunch of time looking next Feb.
According to the towing package for the car on etrailer's website, it has a max of 300 lbs tongue weight.
Well, ok, I am reading the tongue weight is 10% of the max towing capacity? So that would be 100 lbs? Then I read comments of I should be fine pulling a 14 ft jon boat no issues. I'm so confused ...
Do I NEED to install an external trans cooler??
If I was going to haul it very far or very often, at highway speeds or on highways with long/steep hills .... yeah, I probably would.
I did just that, on a previous V6 Blazer ... pulling a 15.5' fiberglass boat w/70hp Yammy. My Tundra has "tow pkg" built in, and the "cooler" is part of the setup. And that's on a 4.7L V8 motor.
I'll have my mechanic look at it for me when he installs my trailer hitch for me. I just really didn't want to waste my money here on installing a trailer hitch for it, if I can't safely do this. Now I'm being told a max tongue weight is 100 lbs? I don't know what all this is honestly. So now I need to look the boat up in question that I am buying to see it's weight, plus the trailer's weight that it comes with?
Remember, also, that you can "change" the tongue weight by shifting weight in the boat (more or less weight towards the transom). If you have a set of bathroom scales, you can set the trailer tongue on those and get a reasonable idea of tongue weight.
I have a 3rd wheel on the trailer (trailer tongue jack) so I really don't know what the tongue weight on my boat is. All I know is .... that if the tongue weight is TOO LIGHT, it can cause the trailer to swing back/forth (jackknifing) at speed. And you definitely DON'T want that going on !!
Trade the car in for a truck and be done with it.
