Does yellow colored line spook crappie, bluegill and redear? Thanks
It hasn't for me, and I've been using it for decades.
I used to always thank that but now I use it on everything I believe it may even be better. :twocents I love it!
I've seen it with my own eyes, yellow line will be outfished by clear line on gills and redears in some clear water situations.
Redears are the one fish for which I use a flourocarbon leader. I sat in a boat with a guy who was using flourocarbon and tied on a leader to my Stren Yellow when he had boated about 10 fish to my NONE. I immediately started catching - never did catch up though.
Learned my lesson.
So do you guys use a leader night fishing too? I use the hi-vis yellow so that I can see it at night, but use the same for my day trips too.
I only fish for crappie unless I've got my wife and kids with me, so I can really only answer from the crappie standpoint. I love using Power Pro 10lb braid with light wire hooks when casting jigs because it has no stretch and you can instantly feel the thump. However I have noticed a trade off. Because of the absence of stretch, sometimes I tend to straighten hooks out in the the fish's mouth. With mono, you have that little bit of give in the line to act as a shock absorber, tho you can't feel the thump as well. With that being said, my brother has wore me out before using mono while I am using braid(without a leader). We use hi-viz Mr. Crappie brand in 4 or 6 lb test. For crappie, I know the yellow doesn't spook them, because of our experiences.
I don't know if it's just luck or its a fact, but I have seen mono outfish braid(without a leader) more times than not, no matter the color of each.
Now, if u tie and flouro leader to your braid, it works really well, but it tends to break off as much as the mono and it's a real pain to have to tie on a new leader and your jig each time u break off.
In my perfect world I wld have 4 or more rods with braid and flouro leaders tied on so if I broke off I cld just grab another rod, because I believe that is the perfect setup, but that's not in my budget right now.
I will throw in my opinion for whats its worth. I am only speaking about crappie, thats all I do now. I prefer Suffix yellow or orange , helps me see many bites I never feel.
Most conditions I don't think it spooks them, but in a very clear lake like Cumberland I have had it put on me by my partner until I changed to a low vis line. We were fishing about 15 feet deep.
I agree with colayn. Because I seen it a few times that clear line out fishes yellow line at cumberland.....same thing with braid at cumberland
I use hi viz for everything. I'm a line watcher and have never seen much of a difference.
I know for a fact that mono or fluoro will out fish yellow line for Gills or Crackers. This was proven in a clear water strip pit. Not sure on KL but it has to make a difference.
For me, it always depends on water clarity. Color is not nearly as important on lakes like Kentucky or Barkley as it is on a clear-water lake like Lake Cumberland. It will knock your catch ratio down considerably on Cumberland when you use colored line....for any species of fish. Or at least that is my experience.
I use chartreuse braid with a long (10' or so) 6lb fluorocarbon leader. Best of both worlds, no stretch braid to feel the thump and no see fluoro. Also the knot lets me know when I have 10' of line out.
I used to fish just the braid by itself but have improved success with the fluoro leader.
How do u keep the knot from hindering your casting ability? If u have a 10' leader it would be reeled up into the spool. I've always used short leaders because the knot catches my line on the spool when I try to cast. Also, my knot tends to drag in my guides. I try to keep my leader and knot shorter than the length of line I leave out for casting. I use a uni-to-uni knot for the connection. Is there a better more slimline knot I should be using? I'm just trying to learn something here.
In clear water I think line color makes a big difference. What kind of knot do you guys use to tie the floro to the braid?
I've used the Yucatan Knot, Stren Knot, and FG knot. The FG knot is a pain to tie. I like the Stren Knot and Yucatan knot.
I've used a Hi Viz ever since my eyes have gotten to the point that I looked like an idiot waving at someone off in the distance when i break off and couldn't see the line anymore. I tie snap swivels for pulling, hooks, sinkers, and jigs directly to it. It's also easier to see the line when tying knots. I've always managed to bring home enough to eat and share some. One thing I did find that i'd like to try, last fall at the shin dig, I saw rods set up on a purple boat, I think the guy was a tug boat cook, anyway he had something to do with a tug boat. :Rofl The rods had beads that "CLACK" against the rod when spider rigging, and get your attention. Do you look for beads that touch the rod or should they fall just short of touching when set up? The other question: where do you find them? Thanks!
I have found small glass beads at Michael's Hobby Shop and Hobby Lobby.
I've used the beads. I used the beads that I had Carolina rigged with. Dont remember where they came from, but i would think a fishing supply should have them.
